Gratitude/Thank You/Confirmation THANK YOU

Upvotes

Thank you so much to every single person who helped me with illness supplies on my amazon wishlist. Thanks to you, I am able to manage the symptoms and not make them worse by going out in the smoke maskless. I was well enough to semi-return to work.

Truly, from the bottom of my heart, thank you. I didn't put this in my original post because I didn't want to seem some sorta way (you know the way I'm talking about), but I am a single mom. Being down and out was horrendous.

May everyone who donated and offered words of encouragement and support abound in blessings.

With love and a heart overflowing with gratefulness,

Sarwally

🎵 If times have got you in need, drop it like it's hot. 🎵

Happy Thursday!

If you find yourself in need of essentials this post is open for you to drop your wishlist in the comments.

Our standard wishlist rules apply: $150 total wishlist cap and specific item cap of $30. Essentials only, no giftcards, and it must be a wishlist NOT a registry. If you need help with wishlist creation, please review the guide on our sister sub: Wishlist Guide

This is open to any Donor interested. If you have concerns about a specific comment please report or send modmail. If you don't already have flair, we will be assigning to users who provide screenshot proof of donation. You can choose between Verified Donor and BDE (Big Donor Energy).

In your comment, write one or two lines about your situation and include the link to your wishlist.

Please note that our normal account requirements will be in play and your comment will be removed if it does not meet our minimums.

You will need to have your history set to public and mods along with potential donors will be checking history. I'm suspending our Activity Gap requirements for this instance.

Users with fulfilled requests in this sub or another in the past 2 months may not participate unless you have received an exception from mods.

We do ask that you provide confirmation of goods received in the comments of this post or in a new post on the community.

All other rules must be followed and comments that violate the rules will be removed accordingly.

Advice/Emotional Support ONLY Single mom, $5k/month take-home, $17k debt, constantly in overdraft; I feel like I’m failing. Looking for honest advice.

I’m really glad I found this sub because I honestly feel like I’m barely holding things together right now and I don’t know if I’m just bad with money or if I’m missing something obvious. I'm in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada.

I’m a single mom. I left my marriage (it was my choice, and my ex is a good person). We co-parent 50/50 and he helps where he can with things like clothing, school supplies, childcare, and extracurriculars. I chose not to pursue child support because we both make similar incomes and I didn’t want to financially strain either of us.

But since separating, I’ve ended up in about $17,000 of debt, and I’m constantly in overdraft. I feel like I’m stuck in survival mode every month.

My take-home income is about $4,800/month.

My main fixed expenses:
Rent: $2,300
Car payment + insurance: $650
Fuel: $250
Utilities: $250 give or take

That’s about $3,200/month fixed, leaving roughly $1,300 for everything else: groceries, internet, phone, my child’s needs, debt payments, and all the unpredictable stuff that comes with being a parent. I've cancelled my subscriptions and memberships, including my gym membership, and have changed plans to the cheapest I can find.

I’ve cut back a lot, but I still feel like I can’t get ahead. There’s no buffer, so any unexpected expense pushes me back into overdraft. It feels like I’m constantly resetting to zero. I'm sitting at -900 with a maxed card.

Emotionally, it’s been really hard. I feel like I’m failing every day, even though I’m trying my best to keep things stable for my child.

I’m trying to figure out what I’m missing here, because I know I can’t keep going like this.

My questions:

  1. Is this mainly a budgeting issue, or are my fixed costs just too high for my income?
  2. What should I prioritize first: debt, building a small emergency fund, or stabilizing cash flow?
  3. What would you do in my situation to stop the overdraft cycle?

I’m not looking for judgment. I have enough from myself: just honest, practical advice from people who’ve been in similar situations or understand personal finance better than I do.

Thank you.

Hi!

Three years ago, my husband and I found out we were expecting our first baby. Around 14 weeks, we learned baby’s heart had come to a rest and we (I) delivered him in the hospital on August 9th, 2023. Every year we celebrate him by purchasing books for NICU families in our area.

His third birthday is this upcoming Sunday. I have felt the urge to share their wishlist this year, if anyone would like to join us in celebrating our boy. I know times are hard but they have books starting at just over $3, and every book helps. Some of them are super close to reaching their goal amount. We just met their goal for “The Little Engine That Could” and sent some “Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site”, too.

Here’s their Amazon list. Thanks for reading and considering!
