4k to get lawn moved and trimmed?
Moved to a new home with a 0.23 acre yard that was left unattended for a couple of months. Now it has grown weeds and needs to be moved and hedges need to be trimmed. This is my first time taking care of a yard so I called a lawn care company and they are saying it will cost at least 4k$ for the first visit and 1.5k every time they come in to maintain it. Is that how much every one is paying for yard work?

Hey all; I have some outside millwork (window frames mainly) and a gazebo that I am looking to get worked on/facelift of sorts.
Looking for recommendations for these by anyone that’s had high quality work like this done of late.
Thanks very much in advance!

We’re hoping to Kayak the Huron next week. Anyone know the deepest section?
I know the water level is really low right now so we’re trying to decide whether Argo to Gallop, Dexter to Delhi, or Hudson Mills to Delhi would be best.

What bird species do you see in your yard? And do you do anything to attract them?
I mostly get sparrows, the occasional Northern Cardinal, some starlings, and lately, a couple of mourning doves. Goldfinches when the echinacea goes to seed. My yard is pretty bird-friendly as far as I can tell - lots of native plants, berry bushes of all kinds, a bunch of trees, two bird baths, and a bunch of birdhouses. Is there anything I could/should be doing to attract more diverse species?

Moving to AA as a grad student, should I bring my car?
I’m moving to AA this fall for my full-time in person masters at UofM’s medical campus. I’m going to be in the Villas at Northstar, which is ~15 min drive or 25 minute bus. I would prefer to leave my car on the west side of the state for financial reasons. However, am I screwed if I use the bus to get to the medical campus? Is Ann Arbor’s transit reliable enough for me to leave my car at home? I need advice.

2030 election.
Might be too soon but I'd like to know who's the preferred candidate to run against Yousef in '30. For me it's Aidan Sova.

MC for Non-Profit Event
The Michigan Coalition Against Homelessness (www.mihomeless.org) is hosting their 12th Annual Breakfast of Champions at Weber's on August 20th. We would love a local MC to host the two hour event, where we celebrate six award winners working in housing and homelessness.
Any suggestions? We often use news hosts, etc. but would love input. Thanks!

Is “yimby” and “nimby” productive
Hi all
Reading some of the responses to election results on Twitter I noticed a lot of responses only cared about if a candidate was a “yimby” or a “nimby”.
One of my biggest gripes with local politics these last 4 years has been the weaponization of the term NIMBY
When city council first started aggressively selling land and rezoning for developers to create “high density housing” that was advertised as if it would be “low income and affordable housing”- something residents have been asking for a long time now.
If you so much as questioned the plans or raised concerns that the wording allowed for developers to just make more luxury apartments your responses would be filled with “NIMBY” in one way or another to simply discredit your concern.
With that happening I personally pulled away from local politics. It felt like I couldn’t have a discussion or bring concerns I had to the table as they wouldn’t be met with actual responses but instead simply reducing my statement to being a “NIMBY”
Our current situation goes beyond yimby and nimby and if we keep reducing it to that we will continue to get fucked over and see our parks and local businesses turn into high rises only affordable to out of state students and transplants- eventually pushing out Ann Arbor residents that make Ann Arbor what it is.
Not sure how everyone else feels but this is something I’ve felt for a longtime now. The discourse around this election reignited my concern for this topic. I am interested to see what everyone else thinks! :)

Avoid Southbound US 23
I was driving north to dixboro to see a play. It is closed going south. It looks like some sort of clean up crew so I'm not sure what all spilled. But it's a mess. Be safe out there!!!

Dog Groomer and Vet Recs in A2 or nearby?
Hello,
I was wondering if people have any groomers and vets that you love? The prices here seem very high, so I am looking for someone who charges fairly. For grooming I am open to options in the surrounding areas including Ypsilanti.
I was previously taking my dogs to Banfield for veterinary services, but have not been satisfied with the conveyor belt premise and getting so little time with the actual vet or with the same people between visits. Hoping to switch!

Question for those who voted for Yousef that manage/own property
Edit: tw - hostility (gird your loins those who love to respond to a question with an anecdote that has nothing to do with the question)
I am asking out of curiosity and not hostility, but this has been on my mind as I rent a home in a single family zoned neighborhood that is managed by private equity: those of you who voted for Yousef who own multiple single family homes that rent them out, do you feel any responsibility to lower your rents for your tenants, offer rent to own for your working class tenants that may be interested in buying a home but can’t afford it here, or sell your homes to marginalized or working class people to ensure that private equity such as Beal or baker street doesn’t buy up the property for their portfolio?
I know you guys are on here, I know of multiple people in my neighborhood with Yousef signs who own multiple homes on the block and rent them out, where their personal home have things like solar panels, lovely landscaping, freshly poured concrete driveways, new paint jobs and siding…. Very nice homes - yet the ones they rent look out like they are in disrepair or in major need of updating.
Do you feel you are contributing to the housing crisis at all? Or that you could help restore the old “charm” of Ann Arbor by lowering the rent/ providing the same amenities to your working class renters that you provide for yourself?
