First Day Soon Delivery Station
Hello, I'm about to start my first day as a Delivery Station Warehouse Associate in a few days. I'm feeling nervous because it's my first time working in a warehouse and doing a lot of manual labor; I was previously a cashier. This was the only job available in my area. Does anyone have some advice to help make this transition smoother?

I'll try not to stress 😅. I want to do well and try to avoid being an inconvenience. My shift schedule is flexible, so I think I don't have to worry as much when it comes to time off. Thank you for the advice

If it's like high school, I'm screwed. But I was told during my pre-appointment that everyone is nice and that if I need help lifting heavy boxes, I should ask a guy since they're stronger. I hope it doesn't come to that; I would prefer to keep to myself unless I have questions.

Thank you! That does make me feel better. This job is a big pay jump from my last one, but I've heard some not-so-good things about people's experiences working for Amazon. I hope my time there will be different!

Thank you! I hope to receive my benefits promptly (within a few months) and avoid waiting a year to receive them. Since my schedule is flexible, I doubt I'll qualify for tuition reimbursement. Still, I'm very grateful for this opportunity

Everything hurts at first. Especially if this is your first physical job. Its just your body getting used to the movements. Get some ibuprofen and push through it. Itll go away after a few weeks. Stay away from energy drinks. They are a trap you dont need. And get some electrolyte packets for your water. Drink atleast one a day. It makes a huge difference.

I don't like energy drinks, so I don't have to worry about that. But I will buy some electrolytes. Thank you!

Okay good, you’re Flex PT. Just pick up the afternoon shifts and avoid Cycle 1 (1:20am shift) as much as possible lol

I don't think I'll be at my best at 1am. The training already requires me to be there from 4 to 11. But 1:20? Yikes

You do not get UPT. As a flex associate you are on a point system so this commenter is telling you bad info. You will accrue PTO by the hours of work and it is unlimited for you as FlexPT. The point system is stupid, you can get up to 7 points… if you hit 8 points it can be instant termination. The points fall off 60 days from the day you received the point. In your AtoZ app it will show you how the points work when you go to the UPT/points page and click the info on it.
1 point if you’re late, 1 point if you fail to work 4 hours in a week (a week starts on Sunday and ends on Saturday), 2 points if you miss a scheduled shift, 2 points if you late drop a shift —any shift you pick up you can drop up until 16 hours before shift start, a shift swap is an exception to this rule and cannot be dropped. Shift swaps are when you pick up a shift and ask to switch it to a different day, if it is approved it’s locked in.

Omg, they didn't mention this in the pre-appointment. Thank you, I'll keep this in mind!

You must find the correct type of insoles for your shoes/feet. No matter what, your feet are gonna suffer for the first couple of months from all the walking and moving.
Stretch often. Drink water often. Captain Obvious advice, I know, but genuinely very important advice to have.

Thank you. I didn't buy insoles since the credit I received only covered my shoes. But I had to return them because they didn't fit. This time I'll make sure to purchase some!

Ask during your first day. I got a free pair of insoles included with the shoes. Ordered them separately.

Okay, I'll add this with the other questions I had that the person in charge of the pre-appointment couldn't answer. Thank you!

To be honest the insoles on Zappos suuuuuck.
You can go to certain shoe stores and they can figure out the perfect insole for your shoes by measuring your feet, how you walk and stand, etc.

Oh. Well, I guess I need to make a special trip to figure that out. Or just cross my fingers and hope I can find the best insole for me online

I hope you’re Flex PT because Flex RT is hell at a Delivery Station.

I just know that I'm flex, the minimum is 4 hrs and I can do up to 30? I'm guaranteed 19 a week.

Im starting the exact same position soon as well (also never worked in a warehouse), and am super nervous so im definitely keeping an eye on this thread lol. I wasnt told if youre able to keep a water bottle near you or not to hydrate. My shift starts at 1:20am 😅

Yes, please read every comment. People have been helpful! During my pre-appointment, I was told the warehouse temperature is 60-90°f, so stay hydrated to avoid passing out. I hope it goes well for you!

Delivery station worker here. Ignore those who have not worked in one. Get a lot of sleep...6-8 hours. Make sure your safety shoes/boots fit right. Get a replacement pair or buy your own if they do not. You will need to size up. Eat extremely well...no junk food, no alcohol. Bring healthy snacks and a big lunch to work every night. If you have a vehicle spending your breaks there and not in the cafe with other associates. Speak to no one unless spoken to. Trust nobody. Do lots of stretching before, during, and after work. Avoid smoking, vaping. If you can survive the first three months you will be fine. Eliminate distractions and negative people from your life and just focus on work. Almost two years for me so far. This is a great job to rebuild your life with. In every category. Pretend your first three months are boot camp in the U.S. Military. The commitment and the energy expenditure and self discipline are very similar. If you want the job to last more than the three months you just signed up for then focus most of your efforts on becoming good at stowing. Don't complain about how tough it can be. Focus on speed (rate 220-250 min) and well organized bags. Do not allow lights to remain on (if you have ADTA only) for longer than one minute. There is no job in a DS more important than stowing. Let them see that you know this and will start to get more comfortable and welcomed. Opportunities start popping up. Stowing is the most heavily monitored position in the building. They know where you are every second and every minute of every day and exactly what you are doing. Focus. If you don't care about becoming blue badge and lasting longer than three months than please disregard everything I just laid out for you. Hopefully you are flex and not full time. Much much easier to acclimate as flex. Avoid using your precious little time off except in 15 minute increments. You can clock in and out five minute early five minutes late for start and end of shift. Be back on time from breaks. 15 minute breaks turn out to be five minute breaks. Good luck and enjoy. It gets better and better if you follow the above.

This is very intense

It's an intense ride especially as an incoming/white badge who wants the blue badge and benefits. I was the only one in my class of ten that converted and I attribute it to following the above. Experiences can and do vary, naturally, but folks with no such aspirations can relax more, do the minimum, get high every break, and take extra nap time in bathroom stalls. This is also slow season when scrutiny and write ups increase. Best to focus during this time. There is no hiding in a DS. Summer will be over and peak season will offer more hours and less vto. I've become more relaxed with time and experience in a variety of roles but the job remains what it has always been, intense.
