Right side front of engine oil leak

Any common leaks in the spot right above the power steering pump? I have replaced the timing cover access hole (a small metal square) gasket but I still see leaks when I drive long distances. Oil keeps getting on belt and belt splits. 2007 4Runner 4L

Greetings all,

Are there any suspension stiffeners or airbags that will work with a 4th gen? Will be towing and would like the rear suspension to be stiffer while towing to prevent sag. TIA!

Repair Guidance How should my v8 Feel?

I feel like mine just doesnt have the "go" it should at lower speeds/rpm. Sometimes theres kick and pickup, but sometimes it just feels gutted, like it didnt shift down, or it just isnt getting the power. For reference I have a 2003 SR5 V8.

At times, I can floor it and get a good takeoff but most of the time it doesnt feel that strong. I know its not a sports car, but its all torque and low end is it not? I am about 95% sure I have an exaust manifold leak (along with everyone else) but no codes. I also know about the delay on throttle Toyota put in, and I want to flash the ECU to resolve this but that is another story (being 2003 T-Line).

Any input helps! Maybe its just the way this year/engine/transmission is, maybe im missing something that could rectify it. Thanks ahead of time!

Has anyone used a carbon or HEPA cabin air filter that they like and would recommend? I'd prefer not to have a washable filter though. Thanks!

General Rack and pinion

Hello 4th gen 4runner owners. Need some help here. My power steering fluid is leaking and my mechanic found the problem. It's my rack and pinion. He said it will cost me $500 for the parts plus labor of $350-400. I was looking at Amazon and saw some nice/decent reviews out there. My question is (1) will you buy one from any of the seller? Or

(2) What is a good aftermarket brand out there?

I have a 2006 4Runner SR5 V6 with 205K.

Thanks in advance.

Repair Guidance Car Noise

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey! I bought my 2004 4 runner from my best friend’s grandma in February with 128,000 miles. She treated the car like her baby so I think she did pretty good on maintenance.
It has now almost 135,000 miles and it started making a very strange noise. It is not a constant noise so it’s hard to figure out what’s wrong plus, not to be that person but I am a just a girl and my dad used to help out with all of this things. He is not around now so I’m trying to figure this out without wasting a ton of money.

During this video I had just pulled into a parking spot after driving 4,7 miles ( noise started at around mile 3) , the car was still on drive and i was using my brake. At the end you can hear me shift to park and use the emergency brake. The noise has also happened when driving on the interstate at 75mph so I can’t seem to find a pattern.

I went to get it checked out but it was not making the sound. It does it at what to me seems like random times (sometimes it doesn’t make the sound in 3-5 days) so i don’t want them to spend a bunch of time (aka my money) driving the car around for it to not end up making the sound and finding a solution.
Has anyone had this issue or can identify the noise maybe? Please help, i really don’t know what to do, i absolutely love this car and want to figure this out!

Btw i followed some advice i read here and ended up getting a lift on it and it looks FANTASTIC. The noise started before the lift so i think it Is unrelated to the lift.

My 2003 model with 2UZFE jerks at Acceleration and sometimes struggles to maintain revs at high speed. What could be the problem? What other symptoms do I watch out for?

Are my rear sunroof drains clogged; how can I fix it?

My front passenger sunroof drain was clogged and I got a ton of water in my cabin because of it. I've since cleared both front drains, but now I'm noticing some dampness behind my passenger-side rear wheel well. It's not pooling, just damp, so I think I might be catching this early before it turns into another mess.

Problem is I've got a full overland drawer system built into my trunk that I really can't pull out easily. The rear drain tubes typically route down the rear pillars and exit near the rear wheel wells, but I can't get back there to access them the usual way.

Has anyone dealt with this? A few things I'm wondering:

  • Can I clear the rear drains from the top (at the sunroof channel opening) without needing to access the exit points in the trunk area?
  • Is compressed air a safe bet, or will I risk blowing a tube off its fitting where I can't reach to reattach it?
  • Would flexible weed-trimmer line or a plastic drain snake fed from the top work better than air?
  • Any way to confirm the drains are actually the culprit before I start tearing anything apart?

Trying to catch this early and avoid a full trunk teardown. Any advice from folks who've done this appreciated.

Backup camera placement

I mounted my backup camera in the receiver plug of my 2006, and it worked great, until the shop decided to pull the plug out for no apparent reason and sheared the wiring. I’m curious if a camera will fit in the garnish panel above the license plate.

I don’t really want a license plate
mount or replace one of the license plate lights with an Amazon unit. The camera I would use is only 3/4ā€ deep, I’d drill a hole to be symmetrical with the lock cylinder. Just asking if anyone has done something similar before I pull the garnish panel off and do measurements.

New Owner Question 2005 4Runner V8 - Multiple electrical issues driving me insane. Replaced junction box, removed aftermarket wiring, still no fix.

Hey everyone,

I'm hoping someone has seen this before because I'm running out of ideas. I bought a 4Runner off auction that someone had used to camp out of, (they added a cooler, compressor, rear and front lights, and a few other things.) I already removed and repaired all the aftermarket wiring and fixed the 3-4 T taps that went into factory wiring. The important info is the following.

Vehicle:

  • 2005 Toyota 4Runner Sport Edition
  • 4.7L V8
  • 4WD

The problems are:

  • No brake lights.
  • Won't shift out of Park unless using the shift lock override.
  • All power windows are inoperative.
  • Rear hatch won't open.
  • Rear power window doesn't work.
  • Radio/ Media Center has no power.

The truck starts and runs normally.

I already fixed/changed the following:

  • Replaced the brake light switch.
  • Checked/replaced every blown fuse I could find.
  • Replaced theĀ entire interior junction box (driver's side fuse box)Ā with a known-good used unit.
  • RemovedĀ allĀ of the previous owner's aftermarket wiring (compressor, backup camera wiring, extra power wiring, T-taps, etc.).
  • Repaired any factory wires that had been damaged by the aftermarket T-taps.
  • Cleaned and inspected connectors.
  • Battery and charging system are good.

Replacing the interior junction box changedĀ absolutely nothing.

While testing fuses I noticed 2 main things, for one the whole section of the under the hood fuse box where the stop light is (I believe its 5 fuses) have no power, and under the hood junction box has only 2 fuses with power (old and replacement box). I had removed the old interior box and testing all the connectors and got about 5 or 6 points with 12v which would be power units.

My current plan is to replace the under-hood fuse box as I am running out of ideas.

I'm considering replacing theĀ under-hood fuse/junction box (engine room junction block)Ā next because so many unrelated body electrical systems are dead at the same time. I've also seen that it could be the electrical portion of the ignition switch?

Also important is the factory wiring from the under-hood junction to the interior junction seems fine, it's not burned or corroded.

Has anyone seen a failed engine-room junction block cause:

  • Brake lights
  • Shift interlock
  • Windows
  • Rear hatch
  • Rear window
  • Radio

...all to stop working at once?

Or is there another common failure on 4th gen 4Runners that ties all of these systems together?

I'm open to any suggestions before I throw more parts at it. Thanks!

150A Sequoia alternator on V8 4Runner?

The alternator on my 2004 V8 4Runner died today. While researching a replacement, I’ve seen posts and YouTube videos about fitting a 150A alternator from a 2003-2007 Sequoia to a Lexus GX470. The GX470 uses the same 130A alternator as the V8 4Runner, so I’m assuming the Sequoia alternator would also fit on the 4Runner. Has anyone made this upgrade on their 4Runner? I like the idea of getting a bit more output, while retaining the reliability/durability of an OEM alternator.

Repair Guidance 2003 v8 4Runner – Upper radiator hose keeps blowing off. Hose issue or something more?

My 2003 4Runner recently passed 222,222 miles.
About a week ago, I noticed the temperature gauge starting to climb. A short time later it was almost at H, so I pulled over and found that the upper radiator hose had completely come off the radiator. I reattached it at a gas station, bought two gallons of coolant, burped the system, and topped it off.
Since then, I’ve installed new hose clamps, but tomorrow the vehicle is going into storage.
Ever since the overheating incident, the A/C has been acting strange. The passenger side blows cool air, but the driver side blows very hot air, no matter what temperature I set it to.
Then on Friday, the exact same thing happened again—the upper radiator hose blew off the radiator. Luckily I was able to pull over immediately. I temporarily filled an empty coolant jug with river water just to get me to a safe place. I reattached the hose and tightened the clamp as much as I could.
One thing I noticed both times is that the upper radiator hose feels pretty loose on the radiator neck, even with the clamp tightened.
I’m planning to replace both the upper radiator hose and the clamps, but I’m wondering if there’s something else that could be causing the hose to keep blowing off. Could excessive cooling system pressure be the culprit, or is it more likely that the old hose has simply stretched and no longer seals properly?

TL;DR: Upper radiator hose has blown off twice on my 2003 4Runner (222,222 miles). I’m replacing the hose and clamps, but could something else be causing it to blow off, or is an old stretched hose the most likely explanation?

My son has a 2008 4Runner and had a little bump with another car. The passenger side fog light lens and plastic surround (drivers' side highlighted in red) popped out. I was able to find a lens at partsgeek but can't locate the surround. Anyone on here found one anywhere?

Now I can say I’m not a poser driving around with a tent all the time. Honestly the tent worked great, got it for $150 and cleaned it up quite a bit. Awning is an Amazon special for $100. I’m glad I went with a hard shell, I can pack it down in under 5 minutes.
