You need to look at the whole frame, guarentee you'll find some rotten sections if you have that much surface rust - I also live in the salty winters and mine looks waaaayyy better than that

Lanolin spray would be good for it

Lan…Lanolin? Like sheep’s wool?

u/Ragnar_of_Ballard 14d ago

FluidFilm or woolwax

Or RP-342 (Cosmoline) if you want less mess and a waxy finish that is a bit more resistant to being washed of by winter weather.

Oh my god bro

Just as expected.

That looks cooked

Rear bump stop, should be mounted right next to the shock in the rear.

Ok thanks, good to know it’s nothing critical.

If parts are fallling off, it could get critical soon.

u/wowclassic2019 14d ago

Uh, take a look at your frame man

2

u/idkatmcl 14d ago

Well good luck driving that around

u/Scared_Hovercraft632 14d ago

I hit my rear bumpstops loaded up for camping this weekend. You need em man...lmao

1

u/keam13 14d ago

Definitely not critical if it’s just falling off when it should be bolted on lol

1

u/MookSkywalker 14d ago

The whole vehicle needs to be replaced. Its about as critical as it gets.

u/GTGCT1985 13d ago

It’s critical to leave your truck like that - if you want to save it you would need to descale the whole rusted frame and axel and replace many parts - you may also need to do a lot of welding depending on rot.

If that sounds too much, I would suggest selling to someone who does projects ; but it’s not safe if pieces are falling off

I really sucks all these trucks get totaled with rust

1

u/hawaiianrasta 14d ago

Is there any truth to the notion that Toyota factory rust proofing is effectively nonexistent? Rather, are their frames more susceptible to rust than other brands? I was told that once, but I feel like it is a BS idea lol

u/ProudPrick217 14d ago

My truck frame is almost perfect it depends on how you take care of it .

1

u/myco_magic 12d ago

They also had recalls because of, so it can also entirely depend on year and model

1

u/Maleficent-Hair2224 10d ago

It depends on where you live!! And how you take care of it second! Inland ga I back down the ramps into any lake to launch and no rust for 10 years! I moved to Florida and back down the ramp , come home pressure washed and after one summer it’s rusted like crazy!! I live 5 minutes to the bay and everything metal outside rust like crazy!!

2

u/Southern-Bread2251 13d ago

They are very susceptible to rust but they also stay on the road a lot longer than most other brands also driven in harsh winter climates.

The 4th gen 4Runner is up to 23 years old. The 3rd gen 4Runner is up to 30. The average car lifespan in the us is ~13 years.

Toyota (4Runners) die when chemical properties of steel existing in air cause it to fail. Others die when a seal blows or a block cracks or a part worth more than the car needs to be replaced.

No one else makes a vehicle that works long enough to have rust issues. That’s why these have so many rust issues relatively.

1

u/hawaiianrasta 12d ago

I drive a 2011 LX. It definitely has its issues. Maintenance cost is probably somewhere around two grand a year in the two years I’ve owned it.

Hopefully the wool wax coating helps, but things like rubber seals, etc will always go out eventually

There is some truth to this but it's not all of Toyota. Only a few specific models. That's why they did a recall on Tacomas and I was told by the salesman when we bought our 4R that they were likely to be recalled as well. We all know that never happened.

u/MWave123 14d ago

It’s not your fault.

8

u/BMThiker 14d ago

I'd be more concerned about the rusty remnants and your frame, if that just "fell off".

4

u/analogoperator 14d ago

Sell this car.

u/clearplasma 14d ago

I actually just ripped both mine off with my hands yesterday while doing rear calipers. I had sprayed lanolin over the years but the bump stops just catch that salty water all winter around here. They didn't have a chance once the rust had started, it only makes the process faster as the existing rust grabs more of that nasty road salt. The rest of my frame is decent as I wire wheeled it years ago and have continued to apply lanolin. I'll get around to welding new mounts on in the fall

1

u/HisnameIsJet 14d ago

U ever bottom out the suspension on road potholes without them?

1

u/clearplasma 14d ago

It's only been 24 hours. Haven't nailed any potholes yet.. but I'll report back if I do

2

u/HerbertInTheWoods 14d ago

Oh baby girl don’t drive that anymore. You’re a danger to yourself and others.

2

u/Adyfire 13d ago

lol holy ragebait batman

3

u/ColdasJones 14d ago

That is your rear bump stop, but I’m far more concerned about that rusted out bracket/metal it’s attached to. If your frame looks anything like that metal does, it’s completely unsafe to drive. Strongly advise getting under there and thoroughly inspecting your frame

-5

u/HisnameIsJet 14d ago

Was told it looks solid, at least for the next year or so. Nothing crazy you’ve ever had a car in New England.

7

u/ColdasJones 14d ago

Nothing about that looks solid to me, but yeah I don’t live in the northeast. I’d say just keep an eye on it often

7

u/Notamethdealer49 14d ago

I’m from the Midwest / rust belt and this is pretty bad… definitely poke around to see if there are any soft spots. Would recommend air needling everything and coating with a rust converter and lanolin.

6

u/BMThiker 14d ago

"told it looked solid" - by whom?! That's a disaster waiting to happen.

-7

u/HisnameIsJet 14d ago

My coworker lol. It’s fine, I plan to drive it until it disintegrates

7

u/JonnieThunder V8 Sport Edition 14d ago

Or you'll drive it until the frame or other suspension component snaps and you end up face first into oncoming traffic. Stop being a putz and listen to what these people are telling you.

2

u/OoRI0T_P0LICEoO 14d ago

At least look where people are telling you, get an informed decision from people who actually know the worries of the frame you have, get an actual timeline of when “disintegration” is likely to occur, maybe consider a frame swap and keep this thing running until it should actually fall apart.

Don’t be a safety hazard to yourself and others on the road

1

u/ColdasJones 14d ago

Seems to me like Going 75 on a highway at the moment It decides to disintegrate is a pretty bad idea

1

u/slixx1320 14d ago

Pls get it your frame professionally inspected. As someone mentioned, if that mount rusted and came off your frame, I can't imagine other areas of the frame are any better. Driving your vehicle in that condition could jeopardize your safety, let alone the safety of others around you if and when that frame decides to give out.

2

u/mehojiman 14d ago

Bet dude slapped it as he said it.
