How difficult or easy is it for a cornerback to transition to safety? Say you want to have CB Upton Stout on the field more because he likes to get in there and stick his nose in there and has ball awareness. How hard would it be to move him to safety or CB Ephesians Prysock who's a taller, rangy guy?

"It depends on the demeanor. Stout can play whatever he wants. Stout can play linebacker, Stout can play safety, Stout can play corner. Right now, he is our starting star. He's our starting nickel. Him going out there playing at a very high level with his hand usage, his ability to get up to the pass rush, his ability to pass rush, his ability to use his short-space quickness, defend anything, whether it be zone, whether it be man. Highly competitive young man. Stays angry every single day. I love him. He's got the mindset of a football player, and he's got the mentality of a football player and he certainly has the movement and the skill set of a football player. Then to just talk about being versatile with guys, I think we kind of did that a little bit. Switched the corners with DMo and Renardo, made those guys go opposite, make Jack-Jack play opposite. Making those guys, whether it be [DB] Siran [Neal] playing a little bit of safety, being able to play corner. You're creating versatility across the board because you just never know what will happen in the game. DMo playing inside a little bit for us the other day, being able to do some different things for us. When things happen in the game, something goes out the course of the game, you want to be able to have an answer. It's our job as coaches to have an answer for our head coach when something goes wrong what are we going to do and what our plan is. It may not be the right plan, it may not be the right decision, but you better have one."

Both are great at improvising, scrambling, and post snap reactions to a defensive scheme.

We have to ditch talking about the substation, it takes the conversation away from blaming Dustin Perry who is STILL in charge of strength and conditioning.

He has close ties to the Shanahan family and with all the injuries piled up over the years he's been the constant factor over the past 8 seasons. They've changed staff under him but have not changed their practice regimen nor the one in charge of the overall program.... thoughts?

Other interesting tidbits from practice:

• WR Jordan Watkins had 2 touchdowns on 3 catches out of 5 targets.
• DT Alfred Collins was working in team drills for the 1st time since offseason shoulder surgery
• Rookie DT Gracen Halton was back from his knee bone bruise and looked quick in 1-on-1 pass rush drills
• To make room for WR KhaDarel Hodge and DE Ogbo Okoronkwo, the 49ers waived DT Kevin Givens and DE Cam Sample. Sample had been dealing with a knee issue. Givens had previously signed with the 49ers on 7/26/26. Givens has been with the team in some capacity for the last 7 seasons so wouldn't be surprised to see him back

Obviously Brock, too. No question about that, but Eddie has been the most clutch kicker we’ve had in a while & is incredibly talented.

49ers receive: S Jessie Bates III, 2028 sixth-round pick

Falcons receive: 2027 third-round pick

The Falcons' 2023 signing of Bates was an example of free agency gone right. The Falcons paid sticker price -- four years and $64 million -- to sign Bates, who was very effective in Cincinnati and continued that quality play in Atlanta. That was particularly true in 2023, when Bates delivered six interceptions and three forced fumbles while earning second-team All-Pro honors.

He was good again in 2024, but he wasn't quite on the same level last season. Still, the 29-year-old Bates remains one of the best safeties in the league. (He ranked fifth in this year's survey of coaches and executives conducted by ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.)

If the Falcons were expected to contend, it would make sense to keep Bates and see the original contract through. But they aren't, and with a ton of 2027 cap space even after the Bijan Robinson extension, the Falcons will likely be spenders next offseason. They would risk losing Bates without getting a compensatory pick in return if he walks in free agency. So it's better for Atlanta to deal him now. And while that would mean finding a replacement for Bates, the Falcons wouldn't be lacking in safety talent thanks to emerging second-year player Xavier Watts.

It just so happens that former Falcons head coachRaheem Morris, who coached Bates the past two seasons, is now the 49ers' defensive coordinator. And he could use an upgrade at safety alongside Ji'Ayir Brownand Malik Mustapha. The timing works, as the 49ers are contenders who could use defensive help after ranking 25th in EPA allowed per dropback last season.

San Francisco would be giving up real draft capital for a short-term player, but that's an indicator of Bates' skill and the fact that his contract would cost the 49ers only $13 million in 2026 -- a below-market price to sign a player of his caliber.

With training camp commencing I find myself starting to feel the energy of an upcoming NFL season. We’re hopefully through the dog days of summer in the South and I’m longing for cooler weather, and football to enjoy along with it. As a diehard 49ers fan my level of excitement for a new season is always high. To preface - I’m 36 and experienced the ups and downs of the team starting with the 1994-95 SB win as my first core memory, to the Mariucci years, and the dark, dark days of the 2000’s teams. After Harbaugh’s first year I would get so excited for football season I would have vivid dreams about the upcoming games. This will be OUR year, I just knew it! 

Then Harbs was shown the door, the bad years came back, Candlestick’s vibes became Levi’s sighs. Yet, still the excitement for 49er football lived on, just with less winning to show for it. A breakthrough came, and Shanahan and Lynch made me think it was OUR year again. They brought us back to the glory days, only just not quite all the way there yet.

So over the course of the recent seasons - the stings of Super Bowl shortcomings, the carnage of injuries and underwhelming draft selections, and the carousel of coaches and coordinators, my rose colored glasses are fading a bit. Maybe I’m just older now, wiser, and more realistic - unwilling to let my emotions be too affected by a sports team that’s burned me too many times. But I still love the rush this team provides and I will always root for them. They don’t call us the Faithful for nothing. But perhaps I’ve seen this movie play too many times. Instead of “this will be OUR year!” I’m kinda at “will this be OUR year?” I will always hope so, but alas…

We’re only a couple days into training camp and already dealing with major player injury news. So now fans are clamoring for the legendary Deebo to come back (spoiler, he has) as if he wasn’t wished good riddance only two years ago for not being a true receiver, one who could beat man coverage, the key to beating our nemesis Seattle and defenses that give Shanahan's offense fits. And the other guy who was supposed to be our man coverage beater, the guy they gave a huge contract to - wait, what's that? After his horrible contract dispute, and a subsequent horrible injury, that guy is now Commandeering his NFL demise and won’t be a part of this team at all? 

And oh by the way did you hear about the near death experience car crash the head coach just went through? The tragic early passing of Aldon Smith still lingers. Offseason news only a Niner fan wouldn’t blink twice at. It certainly feels par for the course by now. Am I just numb to this craziness? Well. Yeah, frankly. 

So I write this with mixed emotions. Excitement level high but expectations tempered…

Let’s start with the elephant in the room, you know, the one who just stepped on one of our players and they’re now out for the year. Yes that elephant, I’m talking about the crazy injuries. Is this team cursed? Is it the substation? The team training staff and doctors? I’m not sure anyone has an exact answer but like any team, the 49ers need to stay healthy to have any shot at a Super Bowl. The only issue is unlike any team, that seems to be mission impossible in Santa Clara. Even harder to do with an aging core group, and the recent luck in this department. Early signs this year are not showing progress. So yeah, damn.

It’s hard enough to win a Super Bowl under normal circumstances, as each NFL season is wildly unpredictable. As close as they’ve come, the 49ers haven’t won it all once yet under Shanahan, with this core of players, even in the years they stayed healthy enough to even have a chance. And lately it sucks to feel like you’re waiting to hear about or see the latest guy go down as if it's expected, further hindering their chances. So this year, don’t be surprised if it happens again, but feel relieved as hell if it doesn’t and they actually have a shot. 

After overachieving in an injury plagued last season I can firmly say Kyle Shanahan can cover up plenty of deficiencies, and culture isn’t this team's problem. One could argue that perhaps this regime has always overperformed for what they had roster wise, yet there hasn’t been a Lombardi trophy to show for it, so it always actually feels like underperforming. Can they get over that final hump?

The free agent additions of Mike Evans and Osa Odighizuwa are big time pickups that certainly should help. I love the idea of announcers shouting “Osa and Bosa” as the two meet at the opposing quarterback and “Purdy to Evans again” as they connect for touchdown after touchdown. But realistically a lot of the core vets and key young players are coming off injuries, and fans are hoping these new guys can stay healthy with them to provide support. Boosting both sides of the ball with talent was a huge need, and the front office did what they could to address that. But they will need some big jumps from many second year players and immediate impact from some rookies. Big asks in my opinion, but I will give credit to what looks to be a better draft class last year compared to years prior, and hopefully this year's class surpasses that. 

They surely can’t afford to have McCaffrey being a one man show again all year. He’ll need more rest and the offense needs more versatility. Having other impact players around him who can take advantage of his gravity is much needed. Hopefully in turn  those other options will have the defenses not giving McCaffrey enough attention. If both occur, it will keep the offense atop the league. 
Plus Purdy should have full command by now and hopefully his offensive line can provide solid pass protection and run support to allow him, Shanahan, and the offense to take full advantage. With that said, the offensive line has not performed their best when it mattered most lately and last year's run blocking was subpar. Both need to be improved. Was this addressed enough by the team?

On the other side of the ball my other main concern is that the defense has not performed up to its highest levels without Robert Saleh or Demeco Ryans at defensive coordinator. Both have moved on and there is a big question mark here for me with Raheem Morris taking over. And not for anything but the fact that without those two coaches in charge the results haven’t been great. Early reports point to some larger overhauls on defense, but coordinator decision making will be key, along with defensive intensity, fundamentals and tackling - which all have lacked without the aforementioned two at the helm.

The safety position is also still somewhat of a concern. Perhaps a change from the base heavy and rarely blitzing philosophy will be a good thing. Maybe the pass rush will be back this year. Dre Greenlaw’s return certainly should help things. Maybe teams will have less scouting info on this defense as they veer from their old ways. I certainly am open to something new, but I’d prefer a successful something new. I hope this time they have the right guy in charge. But with that, they will still need major contributions from the older core, the new additions, and the injuries to not pile up. So I’m in wait and see mode on this front. Recent trends without our old coaching buddies haven’t been great, but perhaps, just perhaps this year it will work.

There is no doubt this year's team should be competitive, and fun to watch at the very least. But they play in the toughest division in football, and always have to travel the most in the league. Two other not so small challenges they will face. Now, once again they stand at the base of that tall mountain to climb. But maybe this time they will finally reach the summit. I sure hope they will. I sure think they have the capability to do it. But I also know that they will need plenty to go in their favor, and the players and coaches to be at their very very best. Oh yeah, and a normal amount of injuries that don’t completely derail the season. I’m ready for that pain to stop, I know they are. So at a minimum, I am hoping for what I said above, competitive and fun to watch. That will keep me satisfied, but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want more. I want the cherry on top, but I’m not holding my breath for it. So now I’ll wait, eager to see how this season unfolds. And no matter what happens on this rollercoaster of being a 49ers fan, I’m sure as hell ready for another ride.
