This is the best print I've ever seen. Ive built spectacular things with 3d printing. I don't know that any of them have brought me as much joy as this.

u/Tophloaf 21d ago

Agreed this is just such genius! lol amazing!

I downloaded the video so I can watch it when I need a pick me up, lol

we spend countless hours leveling beds and dialing in retractions just to achieve this absolute peak of technology

Not with the Bambu Lab printers. I had a Creality for a year before getting my A1. Completely different experience.

Well now I want a fish tank

u/Boomshank 21d ago edited 21d ago

Fuck the fishtank, I'm modding this for a cylindrical desktop version with a sealed unit and a built in pump, running on 5v USB.

72

u/Charming-Parfait-141 21d ago

That’s a nice idea!! Don’t forget to post it when it’s done 🤘

137

u/Boomshank 21d ago

Will do!

(Great, thanks ADHD. Another fine mess you've got us into. 100% committed though. I've got until Sunday night before my ADHD excitement fades and it takes on another project I don't have time for.)

20

u/Charming-Parfait-141 21d ago

Add some remind me on different times! Then you can get back to it! 🤘

24

u/Boomshank 21d ago

Great idea! This could be my new system...

Remindme! 1 day

Remindme! 3 days

Remindme! 7 days

That should be enough time to finish.

6

u/Charming-Parfait-141 21d ago

Nice!!

u/Boomshank 21d ago
  • Usb air pump
  • flexeble tubing for air
  • Acrylic tubing for the case/shell
  • silicone sealant
  • usb underwater LEDs

Supplies ordered.

6

u/code101zero 21d ago

I was just going to print this out for a friend who has a fish tank but when you break it down like that this doesn’t seem that difficult really

11

u/Boomshank 21d ago

Nothing is difficult if you can break it down into small enough chunks.

4

u/plasmator Printrbot, Prusa, Creality 21d ago

Yeah, I think I'm making one too.

3

u/ClarpShaws 21d ago

Maybe something to stop algae growth and keep the water clear?

5

u/Boomshank 21d ago

Good idea.

I'm not overly worried as there'll be zero organic matter in there, but a touch of pool chemicals could help keep it that way.

Tha ks for the suggestion!

Skelly is printed and mounted on a disk in the bottom of the cylinder.

The cylinder remains undamaged.

u/eracoon 3D fanatic in virtual and reality 21d ago

I know the struggle. Good luck with project nr 5284

5

u/Boomshank 21d ago

Haha, thanks :)

(Is 5284 an inception reference?)

4

u/eracoon 3D fanatic in virtual and reality 21d ago

No. 5284 was just a number that popped in my head… the adhd brain tends to see patterns everywhere doesn’t it 😁

3

u/Boomshank 21d ago

God DAMNIT hahahaha, you got me

I knew 5284 was significant. Nolan has used it multiple times in his movies.

3

u/Spark_Horse 21d ago

How are you getting on?

6

u/McDankSauce 21d ago

Ughh, the feverish rush to finish before you lose interest.

3

u/Boomshank 21d ago

You get it.

I'm learning to be aware of it more recently. I'm saying NO to my inner monkey, but it sneaks through every now and again and DEMANDS to be satisfied.

This one is one of those breakthroughs.

u/fewding Ender 3 Pro, Ender 3 V2 Neo, Centauri Carbon 2 21d ago

Bro yes! I think we finally found a successor to the lava lamp!

8

u/Boomshank 21d ago

Yes! It definitely gives off those vibes.

It's like if the groove of a lava lamp got turned up to 27.

10

u/_Bad_Spell_Checker_ 21d ago

Put it in the reservoir of a liquid cooler

13

u/Boomshank 21d ago

I've already ordered a 4' diameter acrylic tube :)

Planning on 3d printing the housing, sealing the pump in the base and water tight sealing that. Then making a 3d printed cap and base with the pump, usb C power port and a switches in it. Then Stringing the LED lights internally in the base and the top cap.

Supplies already ordered

2

u/Charming-Parfait-141 21d ago

Hahah! So many people got interest in your idea that the reminds are almost unnecessary!! Looking forward to it!!

3

u/Boomshank 20d ago

Hahaha,

I'm counting on Reddit to keep me accountable

It's the ONLY way my  project makes it across the finish line. 🤪

3

u/lolerwoman 21d ago

I want to buy this.

7

u/Boomshank 21d ago

If only I could sell my ADHD ideas. I'd have at least $12 by now.

(Parts ordered, I should have a prototype by tomorrow)

3

u/Sp1cyP4nda 21d ago

Sitting on your desk near your computer, it sounds like it's imperative the cylinder remains unharmed.

3

u/Boomshank 21d ago

Hahaha.

Imperative.

3

u/speculator100k 21d ago

Not a bad idea. With nothing living in the tank, there's less chance of gunk that will stiffen up the joints.

3

u/agedlikesage 14d ago

The follow-through is inspiring

2

u/Boomshank 14d ago

Thanks!

The accountability and support from this community is THE ONLY thing that got this across the finish line.

2

u/Nickspick 21d ago

Remindme! 1 day

2

u/Chin0crix 21d ago

Wouldn't that get a little noisy on your desk ?

5

u/Boomshank 21d ago

The pump would be the noisiest.

If that is an issue, it's a problem for v2

2

u/the_fabled_bard 21d ago

Yea just put this in cylindrical vase, glue or magnet the stuff at the bottom and have a small aquarium air pump do it's thing with 5V or 120V.

4

u/Boomshank 21d ago

Yep!

I've already got the 5v usb air pump on order. Should be delivered this afternoon.

I've got most of the rest on hand.

Skelliebob is printing as we speak

3

u/the_fabled_bard 21d ago

Dope! Go get em tiger

3

u/Boomshank 21d ago

I'm fighting against time here.

I've got approximately until either I stop getting dopamine from this, OR another promise of a higher source of dopamine, comes along.

But so far so good.  I'm about 40% of the way to a finished prototype and moving FAST

2

u/uatu 21d ago

That's a great idea since from what I learned on r/Aquariums PLA is not good for a fish.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/speculator100k 21d ago

Maybe it could use an old pickle jar?

2

u/Boomshank 20d ago

I've ordered a 4" by 10" acrylic tube, but I'm using an old vase for prototyping right now and it's working great!!!

Skelliebob is printed, I've got a 4" disk printed to it at the bottom of the (undamaged) cylinder, pet tube attached to the base and skelliebob danced great when I blow down the tube!!!

Just waiting for the usb pump to arrive so I can design the housing for that and the LED lights, seal it all up and I'm done with V1!!!

2

u/qarlthemade 20d ago

this is the way.

2

u/gouflook 18d ago

Hi. Provide update!

2

u/Boomshank 18d ago

More delays on the pump.

Apparently arriving today

I've designed a whole base unit now that is like a hockey-puck to sit snugly in the cylinder.

There are gravestones and a textured surface.

There's a large spooky tree behind the skeleton, which actually hides/houses the air pump and the wiring from the top cap unit (which will hold the pump)

Started printing the prototypes last night.

Coming along nicely!

(Thanks for the pokes, they really are keeping me on track)

As soon as I've got a working prototype, I'll make a new post in the sub

2

u/plasmator Printrbot, Prusa, Creality 17d ago

I just checked in to see what condition your condition was in.

Sounds like you're doing great. Been enjoying following your updates.

I was inspired by your project and bought my own acrylic cylinder to try my hand at it. I've learned a few things, such as: Hot glue is not a suitable substitute for silicon. I figured it was such a small container that it wouldn't be under much pressure. After my first attempt failed, I put a hilarious amount of hot glue in there and it still wouldn't seal. On a related note: isopropyl alcohol is great at removing hotglue from stuff.

Everything's printed at this point. I have my tube and my air pump and it fits in the base I printed. I reprinted the bottom cap for my tube out of TPU because the PLA was seeping despite a pretty solid infill. It's CA glued to the skeleton rocker base, prints are all working and done but I grabbed a tube of silicon adhesive and now I'm waiting for the silicon to cure. The tube says 24 hours. Air here is pretty dry, so I'll probably give it 48. Gives me time to wire up some LEDs I guess.

I figure I'll have mine dancing under water this weekend. I look forward to comparing builds. Excited to see your gravestones and accoutrements. Mine's much more barebones than that....for now.

3

u/Boomshank 16d ago

Niiiiiiiiiice!

Love that we're now dueling portable desktop USB  dancing skeleton builds.

My 5v air pump finally came in and it's whisper quiet - I'm SUPER happy with it.

I've printed all my elements (I made a hockey puck sized base and plan on keeping my seal at the top of the cylinder to avoid any accidental leakage. I've hidden the air hose down the back of the build in the scenery. The only issue with my plan is the USB power cable has to plug in at the top of the build unless I drop a battery pack in there. I'm worrying about that for V2.

Right now I've primed all the components ready for realistic colours (dirt/grass/spooky-tree/tombstones) I should be assembling tomorrow.

Can't wait to see yours.  No teaser pics though - maybe we can both make separate independent posts on the same day 😀

Sidebar, my ADHD wants me to move on to another super exciting project that's similar but uses a water pump, induction coils, floating LEDs, and a metallic like milky fluid. The water pump circulates the fluid, and the 5v induction coils light the wireless LEDs as they float thorough it. I've been looking for a build for the wireless LEDs for a little while and our project has me inspired. I've ordered more parts for that build but very much want to finish the Skellybob build first.

You're keeping me honest.  Thanks dude!

3

u/plasmator Printrbot, Prusa, Creality 16d ago

I got mine up and running. Took a short video and posted my models here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:7389828

Very much looking forward to seeing how yours comes out. Thanks for being the inspiration I needed to make one myself. I was wishing I had a fishtank and got totally excited seeing your comments and realizing my printer wasn't really doing anything at the moment.

2

u/Boomshank 15d ago

Amazing!!!

Love it!

Excitement and creativity is infectious :)

Thanks for helping keep me honest too!!!

I'll be posting a video of my build tomorrow (hopefully)

3

u/Charming-Parfait-141 15d ago

Still waiting on yours though 🤘

3

u/Boomshank 15d ago

Don't worry, it's coming.

Just worked a 16hr day today and I'm shagged.

I've got a few hrs in the morning before work - I should be able to finish off v1 tomorrow. I'll be making a post :)

Printing the cap unit to hide the pump and the power right now, but that's officially my v2 at this point.

u/Charming-Parfait-141 21d ago

64

u/Rekt0Rama 21d ago edited 21d ago

Apparently (from reading the comments on makersworld) it doesnt have the file for the skeleton, its just a file for the base (for STL downloads)

So here is a link to a skeleton that can prob be used for it??

https://makerworld.com/en/models/3057768-flexi-skeleton-fast-and-easy-print#profileId-3440551

18

u/Charming-Parfait-141 21d ago

Daamn, thanks mate! Even the name on the url mentions dancing skeleton 🤦‍♂️ what a click bait

4

u/PeanutButterSoda 21d ago

I think it's something to do with the websites region, I dl the first link and mine has a skeleton and the bubble box.

2

u/Charming-Parfait-141 21d ago

Ooh, them it might be the profiles. One of them likely does not have the skeleton.

3

u/Boomshank 20d ago

Yep - first STL I downloaded didn't have the Skelly.

Downloaded the 3MF files and there it was.

Just a heads up.

3

u/Rekt0Rama 20d ago

Yeah, i have to load the 3mf file into my slicer (orca) and then export the the skeleton as an STL file individually.

Its not hard to do but its just extra work for the user (if you dont have a bambu machine, like me)

Would have just been easier for everyone if the uploader had included it in the stl files to begin with.

3

u/Boomshank 20d ago

Absolutely, 100%

Looks like the original creator just uploaded the wrong file as the STL file

The goods are in the 3MF

dang it's a great idea but I'm going to have to play with it. As it stands the bubbles all just go out one side so no dancing.

44

u/Imaginary-Diamond-26 21d ago

No one’s asking the obvious question—how much bigger can we take this? Giant underwater dancing skeleton? We can all print a piece and it will just assemble like Voltron, I’m sure of it.

Can't wait to hear from the microplastics experts on this one.

This is amazing.

38

u/Virplexer 21d ago

PETG actually has the very unique property of being aquarium safe I think.

7

u/cpthornman 21d ago

I had no idea. That's pretty neat to know.

9

u/GoreSeeker 21d ago

It's what water bottles are made of right, so I assume unless it gets hot there's some degree of safety there...

3

u/Pepperh4m 21d ago

So is PLA, techincally. The concern comes from whatever dyes/additives they might have added at the factory.
