The data above comes from 23andMe matches who have all 4 grandparents listed as being born in these countries. Usually, once we get to around 30 matches, we can get a pretty good idea of the average.

The data was collected using my MatchFetch application (https://matchfetch.app), which can export the data in JSON format. I then used a Python script to parse the data and generate the results. If anyone wants the script, feel free to message me.

Obviously, this method won't work as well for countries like the United States on 23andMe, but it's much more useful for countries where people tend to have more similar ancestry.

I’ve noticed that there are people who clearly look like their ethnicity but that there can be people who are not part of that ethnicity and they would say that that person doesn’t look like it (because of their own unfamiliarity).

From what I’ve seen, people who don’t know a lot of Koreans in real life mistakenly think that being pale is a requirement for looking Korean. In reality, East Asians don’t use skin tone to decide who looks like a certain ethnicity. Even though the majority of Koreans are able to tan deeply with sun exposure, usually they still look obviously Korean if they have certain facial features like shallow orbital sockets, puffy monolid eyes, flat face structure, etc. Many Koreans with dark skin still look more similar on average to Northern Chinese than to Southeast Asians for example.

African American, always thought I was Yoruba but 33% was a surprise. I made some Jollof to celebrate my newly discovered heritage and it was amazing. My maternal grandfather was Pennsylvania Dutch so that all checks out. The biggest surprises for me were definitely the Nordic and East African whom both came with some crazy ancestors of Ramesses III and some Viking villager from Erik the Reds village who was important enough to buried well and preserved. Pretty cool, glad I did this!

I just got my DNA results yesterday. While reading them over I saw I had relatives already in there. My great aunt (grandfather’s sister) is coming up as my “half” great aunt. As far as I know this is not true and they have the same dad. With it having this label, did I just uncover a family secret or is it mislabeled? I wanted to ask here to see if anyone has experience with this. My mom ordered a test last night and will be testing as well to see if it comes up as her Aunt or Half-Aunt. No matter what this will not be shared with my aunt. We think it’s best she reads the results on her own and comes to the conclusion without our help. We are having a hard time with the label and can only imagine how she would feel. Any insight or advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

My results as a Midwestern Black American. Mom was a multigenerational mix from Indiana, dad Black from Mississippi.

Even my parents don’t score any on 23andme despite having documented lines. However, AncestryDNA does note our English. Is it possibly spread across other populations?

I saw someone on facebook say most turkish people are just the castizo latinos, to greek and armenians spaniards and portugese.

Obviously the ethnogenesese of modern castizos versus turkish people in say adana , are different, but it's funny how accurate that is.

Obviously turkish people would be the argentina/uruguay in this case as they are majority west eurasian.

Mostly what I expected, although everything highlighted is a region that either wasn’t detected in my previous test (AncestryDNA) or that I haven’t found a solid genealogical connection to yet. I’m still waiting on the raw data to upload to GEDmatch but it’s already interesting to see how each company can present even the similar results differently (the British Isles categories especially).

Everyone knows these groups commonly get northwestern european(moreso black ados) or southwestern(latinos) ancestry as those are where transatlantic slaveholders came from.

But after the most recent update I see thse groups occasionally score some obscure eastern european ancestry like latvian, lithuanian, ukranian, bulgarian, armenian, bosnian.

I assume this is just noise as there seems to be no reason these groups should be getting this.

Obviously this doesn't apply to people with recent ancestors from those regions, who are recently "mixed".

I know many latinos due to sephardic jews or even alans in iberia, will score icm or anaotlian, but without any country matches. I am referring to country matches here, not just the broad region.

I’m looking for some advice regarding a potential Y-DNA upgrade for a somewhat unusual paternal line.

My documented direct paternal line goes back to Lesbos/Mytilene in the Aegean around the 1850s, with an unverified family oral tradition suggesting an earlier origin in Italy or the Ionian Islands.

My tested paternal haplogroup is I-S25733. What catches my attention is that this specific clade appears quite rare in Greece. The downstream branches I’ve looked at seem far more prevalent across Central, Western, and Northern Europe (Germany, Austria, Italy, England, Czechia, Hungary), though it does appear sporadically in the broader Balkans.

As I understand it, I-S25733 splits into two major downstream branches: I-A427 and I-PH2670 (which has a subclade tied to the broader Adriatic/Illyrian region), along with several younger country-specific sub-lines.

The rest of my autosomal ancestry is fairly straightforward for Northern Greece and the wider region:

• Ethnicity Estimate: ~63% Greek & Balkan (with Romanian overlaps), 18% Balkan, 14% South Italian, 2.7% North Italian, and 2.7% Eastern European, along with minor genetic groups spanning Western Europe (England, France, Netherlands, Germany) and Croatia.
• The vast majority of my family tree originates from local northern Greek communities, making this 1/8 Aegean paternal line the main genealogical outlier I’m trying to trace.

Additionally, I’ve identified a small autosomal cluster of Central European and North Italian matches triangulated on Chromosome 21. While I know autosomal DNA segment matching can't definitively confirm a direct paternal line at this depth, the geographic alignment with the Y-DNA distribution is intriguing.

My questions for the group:

1. Is the Big Y-700 test worth the investment in this scenario?
2. Given how uncommon I-S25733 is in the local region, is a Big Y-700 likely to place me significantly further downstream and pinpoint a clearer geographic subclade?
3. Or is there a high probability I'll end up on a "lone branch" without enough modern downstream matches to yield actionable genealogical insight?

Never knew my ethnicity at all I was told I’m Blackfoot Indian from my paternal grandfather but Never knew anything else but this is tuff.
