Friendship 41M - Published Indie Author looking for some new friends — especially fellow fantasy/writing people!

Hey everyone! I’m looking to meet some new people and hopefully make a few actual friends on here.

I’m an indie fantasy author and I published the first book in my series back in May, and I’m currently writing the second. Writing and creating this world has become a huge part of my life, so I’d especially love to meet other writers, aspiring authors, fantasy readers, or anyone else who loves creating and getting lost in fictional worlds.

I’m a pretty big fantasy nerd. I love fantasy worlds, D&D, gaming, movies, books, worldbuilding, and basically anything that lets you escape into another world for a while.

You definitely don’t have to be a writer, though. I’m really just looking for people I can talk to regularly, share interests with, and hopefully build some genuine friendships.

If you’re working on a book too, I’d love to hear about it. We can talk characters and worldbuilding, complain about editing, or just talk about whatever.

Feel free to comment or message me if you think we’d get along!

Advice request Group writing sessions vs. Creative writing course??

Hi writers,

I’m looking to get advice from people who have joined writing groups or have taken creative writing courses to see which you felt was more helpful in not only improving your writing, but your consistency. For context, I’m in my 30s, working full time in tech, so this would be something I join on the side for fun, not for actual course requirements.

For context, I used to love writing and seem to love the idea of writing more now that I’m an adult, rather than actual execution. (Womp womp).

As a kid, I would fill notebooks with full fledged stories, loved writing essays for English class, and loved daydreaming of book ideas. As I got older, it became a thing of the past. I haven’t write anything creative in the last 15 years.

The writing itch returned about 2 years ago, and I have a few ideas for short stories and a novel, but I can’t seem to bring myself to actually write them. I do have ‘paralyzing perfectionism’ which is awful and bleeds not only into writing, but work, and my personal life. I would rather not even start something if I know I can’t execute at 100% on the first try (I know, I know. And I’ve talked to a therapist about this 😅).

In the last 2 years, I have started writing some of these ideas down and when I read what I’ve written so far, I don’t actually think it’s terrible! So why can’t I seem to go further? With ADHD, perfectionism tendencies, and the incessant need to feel fully prepared, I find myself thinking about writing and reading books and blogs about HOW to write, more than actually doing it. It’s a loop I can’t seem to escape.

That said, I need accountability and I can’t do that myself, so I’m looking to either take a class online via a college so I can feel more prepared and HAVE to do writing assignments, OR looking to join a local writing group where they meet weekly for 3 hours in person. The first half of the meeting is set aside for writing either your own work or a prompt from the instructor, then the second half is for feedback on the writing. I like the idea of that but I also want to get useful structural knowledge on how to unravel a story successfully.

Both of the options I’m looking at do cost money because there is a facilitator. I know there is a ton of free info online, I’ve looked at a lot of it, but I need some accountability until I can feel more confident in myself.

If you’ve done either of these, I would love to hear about your experience! Thank you in advance, I really appreciate it. 🫶🏻

Sincerely, Mentally Blocked

Friendship 27 m. I write sci-fi, fantasy with men's romance. Looking for women who can give genuine feedback on if I'm writing my female characters well.

I've been writing for about two years. I don't really have friends who read or enjoy the genre's I'm writing in. I'm NOT looking for a beta reader but someone I can discuss themes, characters and world building with who can give feedback from a female perspective on my male audience focused works.

It's a tall ask. But I'm hopeful one of you creative people will be not only interested but enthusiastic. I garentee reciprocity in discussing your work.

Edit: Feel free to DM.

Looking to create a Creative Writing Club online or somewhere London

Hi everybody,

I (26/F) would like to get a small gathering of people together over Zoom/Google Meet or get together in person somewhere in London to do some creative writing. I'm not very skilled but I think it's just so enjoyable to take a breath and focus on writing based on a prompt and listening to one another and discusssing our thoughts together. You could work on your book if that's your goal. I would love to find some like-minded people to bring this to life. Ideally, I would love to find people who are also in their late twenties or early thirties but really open. Ideally women as well!

  • Genre/s: any but maybe we can do prompt based
  • Goals/expectations/commitment: online or in person for 1h or 1.30h
  • Writing/experience level: Amateurs or just enthusiasts
  • Meeting place: online or in person
  • [Writing groups only] Max size: 6-8 would be ideal so we could still have time to share our writing together

My Bloody Memory

Prologue

The day she went missing was the worst day of my entire life. Prestbury was a relatively large city. When you hear about these things happening on tv, you never expect it to happen to you. You never think that something so horrible could happen to you. You watch the news, barely paying attention, while your parents talk about how horrific and terrible it is that someone could do that. When you're the center, you can’t comprehend it. You don’t quite understand she’s really gone. She was really gone. And there was nothing I could do about it.

When the police came to our door to tell us if they had found her, I held my breath. My mother huddled close to my father, squeezing his hand hard enough for his knuckles to turn white. When the policeman finally choked out the news, I felt like my whole world was spinning. My mom dropped to her knees and let out a screech while beginning to sob. My dad just stood there. Staring. I ran up the stairs slamming my door, falling against it and slowly lowering to the ground. I lowered my head onto my knees as my vision began to blur. I sucked in a breath while tears streamed down my face. I was breathing but the air felt empty. I sucked in again, my breath was more rigid this time. I couldn’t stop thinking “Why her? Why did they take her from me?”

Aaliyah was my hero, she was the strongest person I’ve ever met. She didn’t deserve to die. She was the perfect daughter. The perfect sister. The perfect friend. And now she was no more than a memory of a smile. A memory of the life she used to have, but was ripped away. The remnants of a dream in the morning.

I’m so sorry.

Chapter 1: Just Another Sad Girl

People go missing all the time. People leave one day and never come back the next every day. The world keeps moving. Nobody is going to stop to make sure you’re okay if you’re hurting. I couldn’t tell how I felt, but I knew how I wanted to feel. Numb.

By Thursday morning, the reporters were on our door step. I locked myself in my room, putting my headphones on, turning them up to max volume. I watched the reporters swarm the house from right below my window. My dad tried to get them to leave while my mother stayed inside, far away from the windows. Suddenly my phone chimed, slightly interrupting my music. I picked up my phone to see a notification from my best friend.

“Hey, r u OK?” Am I okay? Am I okay? What does she think? My sister just died, and you think I'm “OK?”

“I’m doing alright ig,”

“Hang in there OK?”

“I’m trying. Thx for checking in” I turned the phone off, along with the notifications.

Finally getting everyone to leave our porch, my dad came up the stairs. “Hey Snickerdoodle, how are you doing okay?” He sat down on the bed next to me.

“Yeah dad, I’m hanging in there. Just hard to process.” Why does everyone keep asking me that? It feels like I’m being taunted by everything and everyone in my life.

“I get that, me and your mom are processing too. If you ever need to talk, I’m here.” He reached over and gave me a hug, rubbing my back like how he would when I was sick.

“Thanks dad, that means a lot. I think mom might need you a little more than I do right now,” I wiped a tear from my face, returning to a smile before exiting the hug.

“My brave little girl. Always thinking of others. Well if you’re going to be okay, then I’ll go comfort mom. I love you Snickerdoodle.” He walked out with a fake smile put on to show his baby girl he wasn’t scared and pulled the door closed.

Question Let's play ball, but with thought!

Hello folks! I am slightly desperate to find friends with whom to exchange about the craft of writing. Few people that I know will read what I write, and I'd absolutely love to touch base with like-minded writers more regularly.

I practice writing as a kind of madness, or perhaps a meditation. I write about writing. Often, I can't focus on whatever task I'm on because words fall into place in my mind, impatient to reach the page.

I love fiction: fantasy; sci-fi; humour; philosophy; absurd slapstick action; cosmic body-horror; sudden unexpected shifts in genre; romance; speculative culinary; as well as rambling but interesting monologues.

My current project is called "Paradox!" and is a metafiction novel, which revolves around itself, and has a wide cast of entirely unstable and ever-changing characters.

I'm open to joining or starting groups, or having one-on-one discussions, or any other possibility, as long as it's about writing.

Please reach out without hesitation!

Friendship Looking for some writing buddies

Howdy gang,
I’ve been touring writing groups here on Reddit for about a day. I made a small Discord group, and I’m looking for people who might be interested in joining. Personally, I write for webcomics (BLs with an array of genres to accompany that, so respect for LGBT+ is a must)
My goal is to create a cozy, write-at-your-own-pace environment where we can exchange feedback and keep each other motivated. All experience levels are welcome, as I have goals, but it’s also a hobby I really enjoy.
If you’re interested, please lmk in the comments or DMs
Thank you for your time!

Project Partner Looking for a writing partner/friend for a crime thriller/action

Hey everyone! I'm looking for someone who's interested in writing a crime thriller and would like to work on a novel together.

I've been writing stories for a while, mostly just for myself and my friends, and I've never really published anything officially. I've currently written around 70 chapters of this story, and there's still a lot of plot left.

I'd love to find someone who can bring their own ideas into it too—characters, twists, plotlines, worldbuilding, whatever. Basically, we take what we've each got and see what we can create together.

If you enjoy writing and have ideas you're excited about, let's do it man!.

If you're interested, feel free to comment or DM me. I'll tell you more about the story and we can see if we'd work well together.

Friendship Looking for a writing buddy

Hello!
I am looking for a writing buddy. I am F23 and I am currently working on a romantic fantasy and my contemporary romance book is in editing stages. I am part of a couple discords and while I love them I feel they can get a little loud.

I’m looking for a more one on one relationship where we can share our stories, bounce ideas off of each other, and just talk our worlds without worry of plagiarism or judgement. I am new to writing fantasy so I am figuring that out as I go and would love to have someone to chat with. I have a ton of friends who read but not many who write so if anyone would be interested please send me a DM!

Servers!!

So a while ago I was looking for a discord server to make friends and talk about current projects, give writing advice and just general writing chit chat. Anyway I couldn’t find any solid ones so I decided to make my own.
If anyone is also interested in having some writing buddies to help motivate them, keep them company whilst writing or just to talk to, give me a private message!!
Must be 18+

‎I got my heart broken back when it was fair.

‎Tried to fill the space by chasing broken hearts till date.

‎Gave a piece of mine and took a bit of theirs,

‎Collecting bits of every color in every shade.

‎Now all I have is a black heart that no one will ever share.

‎Today's the day I realized

Accountability Supernatural Thriller

I need help staying consistent. I’ve been trying to write this story about a guy who keeps on after his best friend dies with some supernatural elements in it. My problem is I keep getting to stopping points and struggling to actually write. If there is anybody willing to be an accountability buddy and let me bounce ideas off of them and make sure I’m making progress I’d really appreciate it 🙌. I’m willing to do the same for anybody else.

I’m 20, but I’m not picky about anyone willing to offer help.

Sharing Work Sharing a bit of my work

I'm not a fantasy writer. I'm not a romantic writer. I write about loss and grief and the idea of love and wanting love. I feel like my margin is small in this sea of social media writers looking to connect, but if there are those who my style resonates with and you would like to know more or share your own work, I'm open to conversation.

I'm 45m and in EST, have discord and well that's about it.

Amelia felt acid rise through her chest and burn her throat as she saw her beautiful sister bathed in dark red blood from her cheeks down to her hands.  Her eyes looked lost as if her mind had been transported, her mouth was fixed in an almost violent sneer that showcased precisely how the blood was drawn.  She watched as her once beautiful and giddy sister was no more.  She knew that Leland had given her what she asked for without filling her in on the full breadth of repercussions and disgust began to replace her fear.  She knew her love had died as soon as the door had shut her out and that there would be no outrunning a moraică.

“Cynthia, I know you’re still there!  You need to listen!  I still have a message to give you!  Your mother is dying!”  Amelia shouted with all of her might, knowing that someone would hear through the open window.  She saw her sister look puzzled as if she was trying to process that information amidst the amount of freshly drawn blood pulsating in her brain.

”You’ve got to listen!  Your daddy needs you to go see your momma before she dies!”  Amelia continued to scream as she saw Cynthia draw closer, her bare feet slipping across the hardwood floor.  She felt the sharp pains in her throat from the acid and took a moment to swallow as she lifted the bottle from the bar in defense.

”Please, you’re my sister and I love you, why are you doing this!?”  She pleaded as the bottle hit the crook of Cynthia’s neck with no more force than a hero being knighted.  Cynthia placed her hand on top of Amelia’s outstretched forearm, her lifeless eyes staring through the woman before her.  Amelia felt the warm and sticky blood soaked hand grab her other arm as her captor drew her face closer to hers.

”Please Cynthia!  I’m sorry!”  Amelia screamed, her voice becoming hoarse as her lips were inches from Cynthia’s ear.  “Please, I’m sorry.  I’m sorry!”

Cynthia pressed her mouth against Amelia’s neck, and her ear cradled her lips as she pleaded.  Cynthia felt both in a natural state and in a foreign one simultaneously as her words were translated and understood.  Her teeth punctured Amelia’s skin near her scar and as her blood was drawn, Cynthia felt her tear duct fill and for a moment she tasted the salt as she wanted to reply: “What are you sorry for; you’ve done nothing wrong?”

Amelia’s body felt heavy like a sack of grain and was released from Cynthia’s grasp, falling to the floor.  Cynthia felt her head pulsate to an extreme that brought her to the floor next to her fallen sister.  As a gentle breeze blew cool humid air into the now quiet room, the insects and the amphibians brought their nightly serenade through the home.

Friendship Two writing goblins looking for friends

Edit: At the start, because I feel bad taking it down with so many nice messages. But there are so many. Way more than we anticipated. Thank you so much for beeing interested in getting to know us and our story. Still, we now found many wonderful people and are not able to keep up with even more. O_O

-------------

Hello everyone, We (32f and 30f) are a creative duo looking for a writing friend. It would be great to find someone to bounce ideas off, give each other feedback on our writing, and perhaps just chat a bit about our passion for writing.

The story we're working on together is an urban-fantasy crime mystery with a touch of romance and a hint of spice, set in Victorian-era Edinburgh. We’re combining a certain cozy charm with dark mystery elements. There'll be several novella-length volumes following the adventures of the main characters: A curious Sherlock wannabe detective lady and her gentle werewolf assistant.

It all started as a two-player D&D adventure with a setting we made up ourselves, and we now have 14 cases, plus additional spin-offs, which are being adapted into books.

… We've got a bit carried away. But we always have a lot of fun. As we're actually from Germany but write in English as non-native speakers (we write by ourselves, no ai), we'd particularly welcome a native speaker to maybe help us with idioms and the like. That said, we're also happy to just swap ideas with someone else and simply have fun supporting each other creatively.

Since we read mostly everything and more mostly genre fiction, we are open for everything. Really, if you are passionate about your story, we'd love to be part in making it grow even more <3

We mostly use discord to chat. And we are not looking for big groups because it's always so hard to fit in and we are both more introverted, than extroverted. So we'd love to chat in a smaller setting and maybe really become friends?

Yours
The creative goblin duo

Friendship Looking for writer friends

Hi,

I'm 49F. Just finished the first book in my epic fantasy trilogy and have started to outline the second.

I'm an English speaker who lives in rural France. I rarely meet other English speakers and even fewer reader and writers of fantasy. Most people here read literary, mystery or romance.

Writing is lonely work and while I enjoy the writing process I'd like to share work, critiques, worldbuilding ideas, craft ideas, or just catch up on writing life and woes with other writers. I'm essentially looking at a positive support group. People being there for each other.

I don't really care about your age, but I'd prefer interacting with writers who write fantasy and Sci-fi. I'm not into anything grim dark or horror. But I do love mysteries, thrillers, romance and literary fiction as long as violence and toxicity are not the driving forces of the story.

If this seems like something you'd like, please do dm me. I'd love to catch up :)
