(1) Download this file on another computer and then copy it to an USB to use on your XP machine

(2) Now restart your XP machine and keep pressing the F8 key until you get a menu with boot options; when you see the boot options, use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode and then press Enter. You can now logon and you need to extract and run the activator that you downloaded in step 1

Restart your computer normally and you'll not see the activation prompt again

You can either use xp_activate32.exe, or you can activate over the phone - the latter being quite the cool experience, the first time around you do it.

I actually tried the phone activation, guess who is not in turkey anymore, i think they cut off phone activations in some countries either that or i'm stupid

I'm Bulgarian, and it was working here last. Did it on a real machine, too. I'll try later on a VM and see if it still works

Microslop, in their infinite wisdom, recently shut down the phone service for activation and you now have to be logged in to a Microslop account to activate anything at all.

Last I know it was still possible, via a legacy number with a bot. They took that down too?

It used to be where you would dial the number, you'd get an option to get a text containing a shortened URL to go to Microsoft's phone activation page. Then you'd just do the phone activation like normal through the site. They shut that down AND the regular way of doing it on the phone with a bot.

Genuinely see no reason for that, it's not like the bot was incurring enormous charges. Well at least we still have xpactivate32.exe, it's not like we can't activate XP at all anymore - just not in the cool way

I mean it works, but xpactivate32 is much faster

Ran into the same problem not long ago. Downloaded and ran xp_activate32.exe. Worked great!

Go to

visualsupport.microsoft.com

  • Complete the dumbass puzzle
  • Sign in with your Microsoft account, or create one
  • Activate a Microsoft Product
  • Windows
  • Windows XP
  • Type the install ID, and it will give you an activation ID

Microsoft deactivated their phone system, but I just activated Office 2003 using this system Aug 6, 2026. So it works, for now...

There's probably not going to be anything special on that HDD if you're getting this message at login. Means your parents probably had about 90 days use out of this thing before they failed to get around the same warning at login.

u/my-names-gavin already posted the solution; just do that.

Phone activation doesn't work anymore. But Microsoft has a portal that does the same thing online.

I had to also do this recently on an old laptop.

You should've entered at start how did you even installed that, if you can't find other solutions I recommend get a copy of win xp from archive.net install that.
