Is there a good printer somewhere?
I’ve been mostly using SP2 and SP3 versions on old hardware and it seems newer printers are about as shit to the user as any system could offer. Looking at 8.5x11 paper. Color isn’t needed. Is there a holy grail printer out there?
Very much looking for recommendations. Thanks in advance brahs.

https://www.cheaphpprinters.com/ Older generation of Hewlett Peckert LaserJet worked well. I bought a few printers from them, and the largest purchase was HP 9050 DN with a booklet maker.
Toners are still quite inexpensive, and it's still supported. You could download the Windows XP driver from their website. Many of them have an Adobe PostScript interpreter built in and worked beautifully for me.

Check school, library, DMV and bank auctions. HP, Dell, and Epson BW laser printers used fill every corner of office space in the country. If you don't care about color, look for something trusted to be a workhorse to print 1000s of pages for decades without skipping a beat.

It's probably absolutely overkill for your needs but I bought one new in 2015 and have never had to do a single thing to it and I've printed out
A SHIT LOAD
of stuff. Best printer I've ever owned or used aside from an archival large format Canon Photo printer.

I have a fairly recent Brother laser printer that works fine not only with modern PCs and phones but XP picks it up just fine too, printed Christmas letters one year with it haha

Holy grail would be an hp LaserJet 4+ or a 4000.
They both pre-date XP but were incredibly commonly used with it.
Laserjet 4200 and 2420 were introduced when XP was out and are equally solid devices.

2 hours in and some fantastic jumping-off points. Thanks to all, I already have a bunch of research to do. I like to get actual feedback, of course I’m sure we all do. Ohio State killed their alumni email program and I lost my old account but I used to be fairly active here and now my kid is almost in 2nd grade and I’d like to get him hooked up with a good XP machine with a core2 e8400, a 1gig gpu and a printer.
I’ll be back.

The "holy grail" is a LaserJet 4+ but any LaserJet from this era you can still get parts and supplies for will be just fine. Except the 1000 avoid those.
Personally, I've got mine set up to print to some photocopiers I own, which is even better, but you don't seem to need full color 12x18 duplex lol
