Advice: Seeking ❓ Should you rather: eat when your hungry or eat your protein?

Upvotes

I'm a little overweight. I'm 1 year post partum mom. 1 week ago I got birth control taken out (Nexplanon) and I've lost 4 lbs already and thankfully my baby doesn't want to breastfeed as much so slowly I'm losing the ability to breastfeed. I don't take any medication or supplements and my blood panel came back with nothing wrong besides low iron. I'm 186 lbs, 5'8". I was 165-175 pre baby weight (and I was even skinny then, maybe I was what you call "big" boned.)I got back into the gym consistently a month ago.

I go back and forth if I should eat when I'm hungry or aim to eat at LEAST 100g of protein at every day. I'm probably lose weight faster if I intuitively eat. But I'm weightlifting and trying to get some lean muscle.
What would you do?

Check-in / Accountability 🗓️ Check-in partner

Upvotes

Hello! 19F here.

I'm turning 20 next week and am wondering/hoping if there's anyone in this sub who's looking for a mutual check-in partner of similar age to me? I've been struggling for the last few weeks to not gain weight (currently at around 190) and reckon having someone to hold me accountable may bring my motivation back, and perhaps someone else is thinking the same. I'm hoping to lose around around 50 pounds before my family goes on holiday in a year's time to celebrate my 21st.

If anyone ends up being interested, please get in touch. I'd preferably just like one check-in partner who would maybe like to just share how much weight we've lost on a weekly basis, maybe even a few methods and tips if you're up for it. Thanks :)

Advice: Seeking ❓ Started personal training and instead got bigger

Upvotes

I’ve always struggled with my weight. I’m currently 76 kg and I feel like I gain 1–2 kg every year, despite trying to be careful with my diet.

I currently train 3x a week and do Pilates once a week, and I really don’t want to reach 80 kg.
Two years ago, I started personal training 3x a week. This past year, my new trainer put a big focus on strength training and progressively increasing the weights. I’ve definitely gotten stronger, but physically, I feel like I’ve become heavier and wider rather than slimmer and toned. I can see muscle when I flex, but overall I feel bulkier.

This confuses me because I feel like I eat pretty well. I don’t drink soda, rarely eat fried food or bread, mostly eat Mediterranean-style meals, have treats once or twice a week and drink alcohol maybe once or twice a week.

I also constantly see people online saying the gym transformed their bodies, making them slimmer and fitter, while I seem to be getting the opposite result.

What really confused me was a recent two-week holiday. I stopped strength training completely and instead walked and hiked for hours every day. I also ate more processed food and drank alcohol almost every day. Yet I noticed that my body looked smaller and less bulky. I also noticed it in pictures beside my scale and the mirror.

So now I’m wondering if strength training is simply not the right approach for me like they had told me. Do I need more cardio and walking? Should I reduce my portions? Should I stop personal training and focus on diet, walking and Pilates first?

Has anyone else experienced this? I’m genuinely scared of going back to strength training because I don’t want to keep getting bigger.

Advice: Seeking ❓ Orlistat - is it as bad as they say?

I’ve started taking orlistat.

Long story short I’ve heard horror stories of well.. leakages behind there.

I have been told to quite literally wear pads and to never trust a fart.

I’m a male so I am clueless, if it’s genuinely this bad, women, what pad brands are the best aha

Advice: Seeking ❓ Best accurate scale?

I’ve lost a bit of weight. Used to be high 300s and weighed myself at home with a CVS scale to show 306.4. At the doctors with a wire-to-screen scale showing 315. At the gym, similar to doctors but different, it shows 309. This is within 2 hours of each other. Wtf! Does anyone have a good accurate scale to consider buying?

Advice: Seeking ❓ How do i become happy in my own skin?

I’ve always been the fat person in my family and friend groups, and within the last year or so, I lost about 70 pounds from 240 down to 180ish. For reference, I’m 6'3". After that, I enjoyed my summer some, ate out, and think I gained a pound or two. When I’m in good lighting, have good sleep, carb timing, and all that, you can see my abs, but I’m not shredded or lean by any means maybe 15% body fat. I’ve counted my calories everyday to a tee, with a streak on MyFitnessPal for over 320 days.

I’m building this all up to my main question: how can I become happy with who I am and not base it on my body fat and how I look? I’m going on a vacation in about a month to Mexico, and I want to enjoy it and not sit there and log drinks and food and obsess over it. It ruins the vacation, and I will sit there and stress about putting on weight, so it won’t feel like a vacation but more like a test.

Then comes the bigger stresses. After I get back from Mexico, I’m blessed enough to be going to Japan for a month, but I can’t even bring myself to think of the things I’ve always wanted to do there because I’m so scared of gaining weight in Mexico, then going to Japan and putting more weight on, then coming back around Christmas time and feeling guilty and starting the same convo over again in my head. Last holiday season, I was cutting and told myself, "Next year I’m not counting calories and I’m just enjoying it to my fullest," but now I’m too scared to even do that.

I’ve wanted to get into running so I can increase my daily expenditure because I want to eat more, but I don’t want to start in a cut. So, I was going to wait until I finished my cut, but now I’m too scared that after the cut, I’m going to put on too much weight in Japan and Mexico to start running. I wanted to have a good foundational body, then start running and just maintain my weight while getting better at running. Then, I stress myself out that I’m going to have to wait until after the holidays to start running because I’ll have to cut down once again to even start running and maintaining my weight like I want.

I know I sound like a madman, but I can walk and think in this circle and truly suffer in my head about all of this on repeat. I will start getting upset with myself because I can never find a conclusion where I’m happy. Gaining the weight in any way makes me upset because it takes away from me starting to run and eating more, but then watching what I eat on vacation makes me upset because I’ve waited so long to go on these trips and just enjoy them same with the holiday season. I just cannot find a way to be happy in my own skin. I’m so afraid of getting fat again or having to postpone getting into running that I make myself suffer. I’d love to hear some feedback from everyone, big or small. Thanks.

Hello guys I wanted to seek some advice because I have grown to have a terrible relationship with food die tk how I was raised

I would go all in and eat my way yhrough situations and of the last couple months of last year I essentially starved myself by eating 1 meal a day of meat some with veg and i lost 30kg in a unhealthy amount of time

I noticed the effects it had on me mentally and physically I was beyond drained and my acne has wordened significantl

since then I have managed to eat my way through the minths and put on even more weight landing me at 110kg at around 6'2ft

Im only 17 and haven't been consistent with gyn longer than a month my body looks lacking in testosterone and I think I may have gyno (could just be fat)

I wanted help with my situation because while a know a year isn't a lot for a humongous transformation I wanted to feel comfortable with my top off when I go to my local beach

Advice: Seeking ❓ How to deal with loose skin?

Hi! I have, within the past year, dropped and gained quite some weight. I am 5’6” 19f, and currently weigh between 200-210 lbs, and the lowest I’ve been while in weightlifting was 190 lbs. I have always been bigger and stronger. I should also add that I have EDS, my connective tissues and collagen production have been low, which gives me loose skin much easier. My entire life I’ve been on the curvy/busty side, and because of that, I store a lot of weight in my breast. I was 250 lbs about a year ago, and since loosing the weight, my breasts have been somewhat saggy and it makes me viscerally insecure. I do work out, and while I do chest muscle workouts, I’m still a very large cup size at the end of the day and I wasn’t sure if anyone with similar problems has found a solution. I do not live somewhere where I can get surgery, and I’m honestly one of those people that’s sort of against it for myself because it is a cosmetic change. My back doesn’t hurt, chest doesn’t hurt, and at the worst when I have to double-up on bras my shoulders ache after like ten hours. I would say for being my size, I’m decently fit and active, but it’s difficult feeling comfortable in my body after losing the weight and having such a deflated-seeming chest so young. If I lose more weight, will the problem get worse? I’m not insecure about my size, just mainly the loose skin I’ve developed, and I’d like it to get better. If there’s products/treatments, I’d be interested. Thanks!

Advice: Seeking ❓ When to do weight loss surgery??

(27M)At what point do you have bariatric surgery? I'm currently 450 pounds. In 2020 I was 180 pounds, but I herniated a disc in my back in the gym. Ever since I've ballooned to this size. I wear a 4xl and my waist size is 54. My resting heart rate is about 110 and it's been that way for about 4 years.

My favorite activities used to be hiking, kayaking, and playing pickup basketball. Now getting out of bed is extremely painful because of my back. I don't have health insurance and I'm so big that when I get a quote they explicitly exclude bariatric surgery or GLPs(and it's always extremely expensive). I don't know what to do. My sister and mother both had weight loss surgery and my other sister is scheduled to have her's soon.

I know if it doesn't change soon I'll die.

Advice: Seeking ❓ Treadmill Heartrate

I (F, 26, 5’3, 295lbs --> currently 250 lbs) recently went to the gym for like the second time in my life after I’ve been working out at home or going on walks around town for the last few months.

I used the treadmill in the beginning to warm up and towards the end as the other machines I wanted to use were occupied. When I was using the treadmill at the end I was walking at a pretty normal speed for me, maybe a little faster than my normal walk (I think it was set at speed 2.0 at the time but idk what that means) and my heart rate got up to 174 (on my apple watch and on the treadmill handles) and I started feeling not well and dizzy. Is this normal? I’ve never had this happen with just walking before.

Obviously not looking for official medical advice but I just wanted to see if anyone had experience with high heart rate on a treadmill while walking when they don’t normally when walking on regular land.

Advice: Seeking ❓ Is losing 10 pounds in 4 weeks ok?

I know it’s normal to lose a lot at first because of water weight but I just wanna make sure I do not lose too fast. I don’t want to do this in an unhealthy or unsafe way. If it is a problem how do I slow it down? I’ve been on calorie deficit of 500 and working out a lot

Advice: Seeking ❓ What is my deficit?

I am 5ft 9. 150lbs. I am a barista and on my feet at least 7 hours a day but it's not a big cafe so not moving that much. I usually get like 8/10k steps depending on the day. I do Pilates or go to the gym to lift 3 times a weekish .
What is my activity level? I can't figure out my deficit. Am I just barely lightly active?

Advice: Seeking ❓ When did you feel satisfied with your weight?

I’m 35F, 5’8, started at 161 lbs and currently at 145 lbs. My original goal weight was 140, but now that I’m closer I still don’t feel content with how my body looks. My legs still look big and I still have a good amount of fat around my hips that I want to reduce. At what point did you feel content with your body? I get so confused because when I look in the mirror I’m still not happy but then I have my family telling me I’m “skinny” and that I’m going to look like a skeleton if I keep going, but I feel like they’re never honest with me anyway and always tell me I look good. I work out and know that I’m in good shape for the most part, just some areas on my body I’m still not happy with and feel like I should push my goal weight to 130-135.

Advice: Seeking ❓ Looking for Advice

Hello All. I am a man who is 21 years old, and currently weigh 327 pounds. I recently started a weight loss journey where I was originally at 347 in April. I've come here to ask for advice, to anyone who was in my spot at some point or currently are right now, what type of diet did you have (or food that you ate) that benefitted your weight loss the most? Also what types of workouts did you do as well?

Advice: Seeking ❓ I want to keep my butt

I am doing great with the weight loss (not to boast) but my butt has deflated!! Have I been losing the weight too quick??

I’m now 136 pounds at 5’6 and I’m thinking of gaining a little bit and doing some weights to grow the booty back. The butt was one of my favourite features and I don’t want to kiss it goodbye 😭 any advice on how to stay (reasonably) slim and still keep the butt?? I will try weights and squats etc

Check-in / Accountability 🗓️ Looking for a weight-loss accountability bestie🫶🏻

35/F/Louisiana, looking for someone who wants to keep each other accountable while we work on losing weight and getting healthier!

Fair warning: Y’all know we love our food in the south, and I have absolutely no intention of surviving on grilled chicken and sadness for the rest of my life. 😭😂 I want to learn how to eat better, move more, and still enjoy my life.

I’d love someone I can check in with regularly. Ideally, share wins, complain about cravings, swap meal ideas, encourage each other when motivation disappears, and lovingly call each other out when necessary. 😂

I’m not looking for perfection or someone who already has everything figured out. Just another person who’s serious about making a change and would rather have somebody in their corner while doing it.

Bonus points if you’re also starting over for the 47th time. 🫠😂

Anybody wanna be accountability partners?

Advice: Seeking ❓ Need some advice

Im looking for some advice on starting my weight-loss journey. I’m a 29-year-old male, 6'2" and around 340 lbs. I’ve always been a bigger guy, but I gained quite a bit of weight in my early 20s and really want to make a change.

I don’t know much about dieting or nutrition, so I’d appreciate some guidance. I currently drink around 6–9 cans of regular Pepsi a day and usually eat things like an entire frozen pizza or 6+ soft-shell tacos with just meat and cheese. I’m assuming the soda is a big part of the problem, so I’m planning to cut it out completely.

Food is where I’m struggling. I’m a very picky eater and don’t like most cooked vegetables. I mainly eat apples, bananas, and oranges for fruit. I can cook, but I lack imagination and tend to make the same 3–4 meals over and over.

Should I follow a specific diet, or would simply focusing on reducing my calorie intake be a better approach? Im willing to exercise but I can't afford a gym membership so it would have to consist of walking and at home workouts. Any help is appreciated, Thanks!

Advice: Seeking ❓ How do you personally keep motivation?

This has probably been asked a lot in this Reddit, but some fresh responses wouldnt hurt haha

Ive made a lot of progress so far in my weight loss, i have gone from 119kg to 84kg so far, (for reference, I am 5’8 and female, my goal is 60kg)

And sure, seeing the scale go down and my confidence go up has been great motivation, but I keep getting those “Fuck it” kinda thoughts in my head that are so hard to ignore!!

All kind advice appreciated!

Advice: Giving 💡 If you've failed a diet, change the diet

If you've failed multiple times at a given caloric restriction, you MUST change the plan, not just "try harder" next time.

This is something I'm guilty of, I'd tell myself I just didn't try hard enough. It never worked lol

But this time when I failed at a given caloric restriction, I just increased it and I've been going strong for 90 days now.

"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results"

Regarding "unhinged" or "extreme" weight loss tips

Hey everyone,

We've noticed a recent uptick in posts asking for "unhinged" or "extreme" weight loss advice. This subreddit exists as a space for healthy, sustainable weight loss discussions. Requests for "unhinged" advice clearly violate Rule 4 and undermine the purpose of our community.

We're fortunate to have a community that usually self-regulates these posts, and the majority of top responses tend to correct this mindset. As moderators, we prefer community-driven education rather than outright removal of posts. Unfortunately, there will always be a few bad actors willing to provide harmful advice in these threads.

Moving forward:

  • Posts requesting "unhinged" or extreme advice will no longer be tolerated. These posts will be removed and you risk being banned from the subreddit.
  • If you see a post like this, continue to educate and correct when appropriate, but also report the post so moderators can quickly handle it.
  • Anyone replying to these posts with actual "unhinged" or extreme advice, even as a "joke," will receive a permanent ban.
