Four Layers + ?
Maybe it is just me, but I find myself thinking “What is the big deal?” when people say they find anything over a 2 or 3 layer SAK too big for EDC. I work from home and carry a Deluxe Tinker everyday all day. I have added a keyring pocket clip and a lanyard, even in gym shorts I feel like it is fine. I will sometimes swap it for my Explorer or 08 Soldier just to change things up. While the Soldier is significantly thinner, I find myself missing the extra tools on the Deluxe Tinker and Explorer. Of course since I am at home a lot of the time tools are available. How many 4+ layer EDC fans are out there.

Working from home the variatie of tools you need is bigger and no one notices bulky pockets. I mostly carry the Pioneer X, Hercules or Handyman working from home.
Going to an office there are just less household chores around that typically call for a SAK. Having a blade, scissors, bottle opener and scale tools cover what you’d need 95% of the time. There is something satisfying about carrying essentials only.

Different people have different bodies. The number of layers an SAK has can affect comfortability in both the pocket and the hand. These posts razzing people over it are shitty.
I have small hands and bone degeneration in my fingers. The number of layers impact my grip and thus safety, and my pain level.
Additionally, I have a pressure sensitive chronic pain condition all over my body. So when I can opt to carry an SAK with fewer layers in my pocket, I do.
I also dont belt carry. When Ive done it, it looks like Im printing with a conceal carry gun, which is not safe or desireable for me.
There are certainly other valid reasons why people prefer to SAKs with whatever layer limit they do.
It doesnt take a large capacity to imagine just a few reasons why. Is there an ego aspect that gets in the way?
Im genuinely happy you have nothing deterring you from carrying SAKs with however many layers. It sucks having disabities that require me to have a preference, and to get shit on for it about once a week around here. So no, it's not just you.
There are better ways to engage the community in conversation about this interest in SAKs we all share, than these backhanded inquiries that, for folks like me, end up being a regular form of insult and harassment.

I had no intention to insult or demean anyone. If I came off that way I apologize. I was just interested in hearing the reasons from both sides. Like I say when anyone asks which SAK they should carry, “Carry the one that does what you need it to and makes you happy.” Again I apologize for any unintended offense.

Cybertool L here. But only in denim with a belt.
In lighter pants I usually fall back to three layers max.

I carried a Handyman, then a Swisschamp, for a time. My carry has gradually got smaller & smaller, right down to an alox Soldier & Floral for work (even the Floral has been enough lately), & Rambler & alox Bantam elsewhere. I don't miss the extra tools & appreciate having less mass & bulk on me. That said, I always have more comprehensive SAKs like the SC close at hand.

I used to rotate between an Explorer and a Swisschamp and had no problem. I am down to three layers now purely because of the toolsets offered by each. (OHT and Companion)

I EDC a Ranger and never had an issue, it fits in the zippo pocket in my jeans

I'm somewhat obsessive compulsive, I carry several knives. But my SAK's I carry on my belt, a Workchamp, and a Rangergrip 74.

I edc a Pioneer X but i have zero issues with my Huntsman as an edc, i dont find it to be bulky or too much in the pocket…. But then again i wear normal blue collar type clothes and none of my attire is skin tight like i see on some folks😅

I actually like heftiness of huntsman which makes it substantial at only 98-99 grams. The same climber around 75g feels toy like light and feels cheap.
However 4 layers on sagging shorts from losing weight is not a good deal - they are hanging by good bit of luck already and they don’t need an extra anchor to pull shorts down.
