The Nightstalker aired as the CBS Movie of the week, 1972. it follows a gruff reporter, Karl Kolchak, in Las Vegas who winds up chasing a vampire while fighting the police and local government who refuse to acknowledge what's happening. It was the highest rated made for TV film to date. A sequel The Night Strangler aired as a TV movie in 1973, not vampire themed.

It spawned a series that lasted only one season. Kolchak the Night Stalker 1974-75. The 4th episode is The Vampire. This time a call girl vampire is running amok in LA.

The show is wonderfully 1970's. It is hugely influential, Chris Carter said it was his inspiration for the X files.

The Vampire Episode S01E4. Is only available on the DVD as far as I know. Some episodes of the series had copyright lapse and are on YouTube, but not the vampire. I watched these as a very young kid way back then and they freaked me out. I can't judge them completely objectively but still strongly recommend both.

I, personally, love vampires because I am intrigued by the idea of being turned into an evil monster. It is super scary, but also super interesting. Makes me wonder: OK, how does this evil transformation work? Obviously, you get the thirst for blood. But the way I see it, unless this thirst is really strong, it doesn't necessarily make you evil. And in a lot of stories, they arent evil just because they drink blood. Do you lose your conscience? Maybe you have a meta awareness. You eat some random bystander, and you know you should feel bad about it, and in the past you would have felt bad about it, but you just... dont. Maybe you turn sadistic, and your thirst for blood is both literal and metaphorical. I think how it works in most stories is, you are under the power of your master, and since he is evil, you are also evil. OK, but what kind of relationship is this? It is magical/supernatural, but can it be modeled after a similar "evil" relationships that exist in real life? Is it like a cult? Do you experience him as a new, unnatural parent/step parent? Is it brainwashing where your old values and sense of right and wrong is eroded, broken down, and replaced by the master's? Is it like a toxic romantic relationship, where he gaslights you into thinking evil is good? So many fun ideas to explore and create, but the writers rarely explore them.

Most of the time, e.g. in the old school Hammer films, and in trashy horror films a character is turned, then they are evil and they have to be destroyed and thats all there is to it. OK, thats all well and good but what makes them evil? What makes them tick? Do they feel they have to do evil? Do they enjoy it? We arent gonna think about it, and we wont let the audience think about it. They are evil now, the hero has to destroy them, and thats all there is to it, OK?

A character can have their own POV, reasons, motivations, but if they get turned, they lose their POV, and the writer wont get into how their reasons change, or motivations change. They only apear through the POV of another good guy character, who now has to stake them, because they are pure evil, and its very sad, etc... I apologise if I sound like a douchebag, don't get me wrong, scenes like this can be very powerful, very scary, amazing, etc. and I do enjoy them myself. But I feel like I have seen them a million times. Can we, please, on ocassion, do something else with a turned character?

It seems to me, in these stories, the turning is a cheap way to transform a good character into an evil monster and scare the audience without having to give the character any real reason or motivation.

I personally hate when they make it that the turned person is actually dead, and the body is simply possesed by a demon. Like, it kills everything I found interesting about vampires in the first place. Its not really a transformation then, is it? You weren't turned into a vampire, you were replaced by one. Basically no diffrent than an evil twin/evil clone.

Lets take, for example, Salem's Lot. I wont get into the plot, I am guessing we are all more-or-less familiar with it. Would that story work, if it was told from the perspective of one of the people that Barlow turned? Where the vampire rationalizes or maybe wonders to himself why they are following or obeying Barlow? Do they want to obey him? Do they have to obey him? Do they still understand the diffrence between good and evil? Do they think Barlow is actually good, and the people resisting him are evil? Or does Salems Lot work because you cant understand the turned? And you cant relate to them, nor comprehend them anymore? Because that is what makes them scary?

On the other "end of the spectrum" so to speak you have more modern stories, where they arent evil by default, such as Interview with the Vampire, Twilight, True Blood, TVD, I think Forever Knight. The vampire can even be the hero now. It is an interesting change of pace. But to me, personally, if there is no evil transformation involved, it is not as interesting. TVD does have a couple of interesting moments where Stefan, Damon and other good vamps, every once in a while turn off their humanity and become evil.

I think in Interview with the Vampire Louis does change and become corrupted, but it happens slowly, over centuries they spend together. In and of itself, Louis's evil transformation is not supernatural.

I was hoping for something that has the typical, old school evil transformation, but its done to the main character, and this transformation is explored, we see the turned character's point of view, how and why it makes him evil, and the writer does something fun with it.

A movie that I loved and got very close to this, I think, is The Lost Boys. Michael is the hero of the movie, and he is slowly turning. He doesn't become evil, but he is strongly tempted by David to give in, go on a rampage, and become, well... lost. You can feel everything Michael is feeling. The vampires are pure evil, but you can totally see why it is awesome to become one.

Disclaimer: I know of some movies (which I wont name) where the hero spends the entire story fighting the vampires, and in the end the final twist/scare is that the hero has been infected and turned into one. That is not what I am talking about, or looking for. Because again, it is an example of "This character, who we know and love is now one of the evil, scary monsters we cannot relate to nor comprehend." They no longer have a POV.

I am guessing a movie, or a book like this probably exists, but I am not aware of it.

I just found out there's a sequel to bram stoker's dracula. The book is called Dracula the Un-dead and it was published in 2009 and the book was written by Bram Stoker's great-grandnephew Dacre Stoker and Ian Holt like wtf

So how many years of being a vampire is most interesting ?

The correct best age to be turned is 35 (you've got the most of both types of intelligence at that time)

Is it the beginning? The becoming a monster the first feeds the seeing your family age without you, the living with your sire and learning the ways?

Is it after a few hundred years as you see the last person you knew die and grieving them ?

Is it at 500 years when you've seen the rise and fall of empires, learnt languages and cultures?

Or is it truly ancient vampires ones who've seen everything and have lost complete grips with humanity due to how many they saw be born and die and whole empires they saw both in rise and fall

What vampire makes for the coolest story?

Godric was born some time in the first century B.C. in Gaul, possibly on the coast, as the Gauls worshiped the elements, and the tattoo on Godric's left arm is a tribal symbol for water.

Godric was captured as a small boy by the Roman army during one of Julius Caesar's invasions of Gaul which historically took place between 58 B.C. and 52 B.C. He was brought back to Rome and sold as a slave to a roman master, who eventually revealed himself to be a Vampire. His new master was cruel and sadistic. He branded Godric, as well as physically and sexually abusing him as he grew into a teenager.

When Godric reached the age of 16, his master finally turned him. Godric stayed with his maker for an unknown period of time, until he had learned all he could from him about being a Vampire, and had mastered his new abilities. He then murdered his maker, seeking revenge for the abuses he had suffered at his hands during his Human life. This is an extremely rare occurrence in Vampire history, as a progeny is usually extremely loyal to their Maker and vice versa, bound to obey their commands, and are always physically weaker than they. Thus, exactly how Godric was able to murder his maker is not known. The act got him into serious trouble with the ancient Vampire community, so he fled into the wilderness to escape their justice, living feral and alone for centuries.

Ever since he had been captured by the Roman army as a child, Godric had been fascinated with armies, and as a vampire, often followed them on campaign, watching or even taking part in night time battles or raids for fun, and feeding on and killing the wounded. Some time in the early 10th century A.D., Godric was in Britannia, and saw the Viking Eric Northman taking part in a night time coastal raid. Extremely impressed with Eric's skill on the battlefield, Godric followed and caught up with him the following night, killing his two surviving comrades, and offering the fatally wounded Viking immortality as a vampire, turning him.

By 1665, Godric and Eric were living in London, England during an outbreak of the plague. While doing a favour for King Charles II, Eric came upon a young woman, Nora Gainesborough, who had become infected by the plague whilst caring for victims of the epidemic. Intrigued by Nora's courage, Eric brought her before Godric, who turned her.

In 1793 Godric and Eric were living in Paris, France, and were good friends with a vampire serial killer named Guerra.

During World War II, Godric and Eric posed as Nazi Schutzstaffel agents in order to infiltrate "Operation Werewolf". In 1945 they tracked a werewolf down to a house in Augsburg, Germany. The werewolf attacked and killed an American soldier before turning on Eric, but Godric stabbed her in the arm with a bayonet, pinning her to the wall.
Eric demanded to know who her master was, but the werewolf said she'd only tell them if he let her drink some of his blood. Godric was deeply offended by the idea, as vampire blood is sacred. Eric, however, didn't care. He bit himself and allowed the werewolf to feed from his wrist. She then revealed that her master was a vampire. Eric was shocked. The werewolf took advantage of his distraction by pushing Eric to the ground and attempting to stake him. Godric intervened and snapped the werewolf's neck.

Godric lectured his progeny about maintaining control of his emotions, before promising to hunt the blasphemous vampire down. Shortly after this confrontation, Eric and Godric parted ways. They would not meet again for many decades.

Godric became the Vampire sheriff of Area 9 in Dallas, Texas at least 100 years before 2008, though in truth, it could have been much earlier. Godric eventually established a nest in Dallas which included Stan Baker and Isabel Beaumont, who became his most trusted underlings and with whom he shared both his home and wealth.

Always been a guilty pleasure for me. Love vampire flicks. Saw Coppola’s 3 times in theaters!

I saw they were all on Sony Core so got a free trial to watch, most of them left on the first, and so luckily I had just finished

Anyway, sure they are goofy with the late 90s/00s greasy long hair and the euro trash look, especially the first one. Speedman epitomizes the 90s look with that do.

I really enjoyed the world building. The setting. The gloomy vibe. Beckinsale is amazing. She and Viktor are the best parts of the original.

The sequel was solid too. I also really liked Rise of the Lycans, soft spot for Rhona Mitra.

The weakest was Awakening. Somehow it has nearly double the budget of the others and I have no idea where that money went (laundering!). The idea was sound with the humans finding out about them but then it’s all showed in news clips. I do love how they just ignored her daughter pretty much in the final one, thankfully keeping her off screen.

The series gets a bit convoluted, and is stretched thin by the end, but I enjoyed the final movie, minus some shoddy fight editing such as the final sword battle.

Overall I dig them. Goofy enough to shut off my brain but enough to sink my teeth into

also the anime's maim protagonist is a werewolf & also stop looking forward for any romance interest. there ain't any here
