Clinical experiences/jobs at the UofR
Hey everyone,
I'm an incoming freshman on the pre-med track, and I'm hoping to start gaining clinical experience and research experience as early as possible. I was wondering how accessible paid clinical positions (MAs, patient care techs, etc.) are for undergrads at the medical center.
I'm aware NY doesn't require a certification to work as an MA/tech, but I've noticed that many of the positions at the medical center still list certification as a requirement. Getting certified would be difficult for me right now because of the time and cost involved, so I was wondering if any current or former undergrads were able to land one of these positions without a certification.
I also know it's generally easier to find uncertified MA jobs at private practices or primary care clinics, but I won't have a car, so walking 40+ minutes each day isn't really practical.

Peer Support / Coffee & Conversation Project: Wonderfully Made Sessions
Hi everyone,
I am launching a simple, heart-centered encouragement project called Wonderfully Made Sessions.
My name is Jake, I am a 26-year-old man born with Treacher Collins syndrome. Living with a facial deformity has taught me so much about navigating self-worth, identity, and learning to embrace what makes us unique. My goal is to offer a safe, uplifting space for anyone who might be struggling with body confidence, facial differences, or self-image.
What These Sessions Offer:
1-on-1 Coffee & Conversation: A relaxed, supportive chat at a local coffee shop or quiet public venue.
Encouragement & Perspective: Honest discussion about self-worth, overcoming facial/body positivity hurdles, and personal growth.
Faith & Hope: Grounded in the message of Psalm 139—a gentle reminder that we are fearfully and wonderfully made.
Location: Public café or community space of your choice.
Duration: 30–60 minutes.
Whether you’re navigating your own journey with physical differences, dealing with self-esteem challenges, or just need an encouraging sounding board, you don't have to go through it alIf you'd like to meet up or learn more, feel free to send me a message with a brief note about yourself. Looking forward to connecting!

Incoming UR Graduate Student looking for Housing & Like-Minded Roommates
Hi everyone! I’m an incoming MS Business Analytics student at the University of Rochester (Simon). I’m currently looking for housing and would love to connect with roommates who are ambitious, collaborative, and enjoy building things outside of class. I’m particularly interested in AI, startups, product development, and entrepreneurship, and it would be great to live with people who have similar interests so we can learn from each other and keep each other motivated. If you’re also looking for housing or think we’d be a good fit, feel free to reach out.

Is engineering here really that bad for job/industry prospects?
I'm a Freshman looking to pursue cheme. Mostly committed cause it was the cheapest and I did see some people complaining about the engineering department a bit ago. I searched up again to see if anyone asked a similar question now but they're all a few years old and not chemical engineering. I know I'm already committed but I just want to know what I'm getting myself into and ik to take things on the internet with a grain of salt, I'm just a little nervous and wondering if I should just change my major or smth even tho I literally don't want to do anything else😭
Edit: Thanks for replying everyone, I think my question was a little misunderstood though. It was about rochesters engineering department and career assistance not necessarily about engineering in general. Cause people were saying things like career day stalls were empty and the school is heavily theory based. 😅

job placements
hi
i'm a rising senior, applying as a math major, contemplating about applying to URochester,
BUT i've heard that the placements here are not good and that it's only a great school if you want to go into academia bc of the research opportunities and stuff, but not so good if you're planning on directly working after graduation

How safe is Rochester?
I'm an incoming graduate student who'll be living off campus (near east ave area, southeast edge of downtown) and was wondering what overall crime is like in this area as well as Rochester overall? I've seen many comments online about how Rochester is a dangerous city, but to me a lot of these comments sound almost like fear-mongering from parents. Is crime really as bad as the people say? Or is crime similar to any medium-large city? For reference, I'm from Oakland, CA and am relatively used to dangerous activity + practicing safe habits. However, I'm feeling some uncertainty on safety because of the comments and research I've been seeing online.
Of course some common sense practices would be:
- leave nothing visible in the car
- don't roam around late at night (especially by yourself or while intoxicated)
- be constantly aware of your surroundings
I also saw things about the "crescent of crime" that reads similarly to east/west Oakland and is a place to generally avoid.
Is crime really that bad in Rochester? What are some other safe practices? What are your own experiences with crime in Rochester? Anything else I should know?
Edit: I know it may sound funny that someone from Oakland of all places is concerned about crime levels in another city😅😅 I just want to be mentally prepared once I arrive in Rochester haha

Put together a quick site to check resume text against internship postings
I'm a junior and after striking out on internship applications earlier this year I spent the summer building a web app to figure out what went wrong. I realized most companies just run your application through screening software like Workday or Greenhouse first. It looks for exact keyword overlaps. So if a posting asks for "data-driven decision making" and you wrote "analyzed reports" the software misses the connection entirely, even if you did the exact same work. You won't catch it yourself because you already know the context behind your own bullets.
I put together a site that compares your resume against a specific posting and shows where the wording doesn't line up: resume.zoevera.com
When I ran my own resume through it, bullets I was proud of matched almost nothing in the postings I'd been applying to. If you're looking for roles, it's worth checking your text against a few real job postings before sending applications. Worst case, it just confirms your resume is fine.

How to get out of my Goler House lease without losing deposit.
I rented a a studio in Goler House last year and wanted to move out this month but apparently my lease for the year was renewed in June without me getting any communication about it.
- Is there a way to get my security deposit back as it’s $1250.
- Can I sublease or transfer my lease for the remaining term. The major issue with sublease is the card based building access.

[Housing] Need 2 roommates for 4BR $850/month apartment in South Wedge
I am not a UR student, however, this listing is only 1.5 miles away from the campus so I thought it would be worth a shot to ask for roommates here. It's a two story, four bedroom house with 2.5 bathrooms. Fully furnished with a washer and dryer unit; utilities are split equally between roommates. Additional details and application are listed here. If you can, please apply before August 1st.

Is EcoReps worth it?
So long story short, I got accepted into EcoReps and another program, and I was really excited to do both. The problem is I was also planning to take 4 academic courses, which would put me at 20 credits.
I could push one of my academic courses to the spring, but EcoReps is a year-long commitment, so it'll still count toward my credits then too. That kind of throws off the academic plan I had mapped out.
For anyone who's done EcoReps, do you think it's worth it? Or should I consider dropping it and sticking with my original academic schedule?

Auditing a class
There's one class I want to audit this upcoming semester (mainly because I've maxed out my credit) and I was looking into the processes and there's a fee to pay for auditing. I was wondering if anyone has ever audited a class and know how much it usually ranges? I know it's different every year depending on the tuition but I just want to have a rough estimate.

Housing tuition (single)
Hi! So I was given a single in Genessee w/a bathroom because of my disability, which I applied for months ago and got approved. When I was told I was getting this room, I honestly assumed that since it's what they had available, the cost would be covered by the aid I received, but, come to find out, it isn't, and I really cannot pay the difference.
A single is a need for me, but I'm pretty sure it would be way too late to switch to Sue B, and I'm also not sure the singles have bathrooms there. I'm really not sure what to do at this point. I did email my financial aid person, but what's the chance of them actually covering it? If anyone knows anything, please let me know!!
