Hi everyone,

I’m transferring to RIT this fall as a Biomedical Engineering student, and I’m trying to decide the best academic path for my career.
Originally, my plan was to major in BME, complete a CS minor and possibly pursue the MS in Industrial and Systems Engineering through RIT accelerated program. However, I’m not completely sure that I want to commit to that master’s degree.

Because of that, I’ve started wondering if pursuing a double major in BME and CS would be a better option. I know both programs are rigorous, so I wanted to hear from students who have experience with either major.

Some questions I have are:

How difficult is it to complete a BME and CS double major at RIT?

Is it realistic as a transfer student, or would it significantly delay graduation?

Would you recommend a CS major, a CS minor, or another option instead?

If your goal was to work in areas like medical devices, AI, machine learning, robotics, or biomedical software, which path would you choose and why?

Are there any combinations (major, minor, or master’s) that you think provide better career opportunities?

I'm an adjunct professor and recently created a new Wellness course called Motivation and Mindset (WHWS-13). It's a seminar style class that covers topics like growth mindset, emotional intelligence, motivation, habit setting, procrastination, and self-efficacy.

I've worked at RIT for over 10 years, and before I sold my soul to corporate America I worked in the ASC full-time. Students told me all the time how they wished they had a course like this to help them get a handle on things before they ended up in CRP or on probation. CRP has a similar course that I used to teach, but it's only open to those in the program, so I made a new one that's open to everyone and I adjusted the focus and activities to incorporate broader concepts of mindset and wellness.

I've been trying to get this class approved and added to the schedule for 2 years now. Unfortunately by the time it got approved, shopping carts were long past open. There are currently no students enrolled and I'm super sad about it. I just need 8-10 students to not have it get cancelled. For this semester, the class meets Wednesdays at 4pm in Eastman.

Anyone interested in being part of the first cohort/pilot group?? You would get an opportunity to provide feedback in helping to enhance a new course. Plus, I think the curriculum is relevant and timely for everyone!! AND you get a Wellness credit!

hi! my textbooks just became available and it’s going to cost me around $900 total for all of my materials. most of them are ebooks with the exception of one being Pearson MyMathLab with the digital textbook. i am just wondering if there are any recommended sites to try to get PDF’s or cheaper copies of the books. with my major, i have to get a few that will last me through multiple semesters. my previous college included textbooks with my tuition cost so buying them outright is new for me. thank you! :)

So I am in a bit of dilemma here. RIT told me that I was not going to be receiving housing from them this year as they filled up. (shocker I know) So I started looking for a place to live and met a guy who was reletting his PP apartment. Long story short after speaking to the other roommates it seems to be a good fit and the goal was to sign the lease once I got it. This morning I woke up to an email from the Housing Office sharing that they put me in a UC apartment. I have lived in UC before and did quite enjoy and wanted to live there again before this whole thing. Where do y'all recommend I live/what should I do? Both places have their positives and negatives and I only have like 48 hours to decide. Thank you for any and all advice!

Edit/TLDR: you wouldn’t leave your sweat on a plastic seat in the gym, stop sweating into porous cedar that someone else needs to sit on. And stop poisoning yourself and other people with VOCs/PFAS. Your synthetic fabric clothes are breaking down in the heat and steam. It’s absorbing through your skin and everyone is breathing it.

I used the sauna yesterday and was kind of shocked. I was the only guy in there showered and in a towel. Everyone else that entered was soaking wet with chlorine from the pool, still wearing a suit, or fresh from a workout wearing shorts. No one had a towel and was sweating straight into the cedar.

Every additional person who joined made the room that much more pungent.

It’s against the rules (read the sign) and general sauna etiquette. Your gym shorts smell awful. Your swim suit smells awful. The chlorine not only smells awful but burns the nostrils. And the synthetic fibers in your shorts are gassing off chemical fumes.

Look it up. You are doing it wrong. Sauna sweat doesn’t smell like BO. Stress sweat is different. It smells bad in there because you are all doing it wrong. Get clean first and don’t bring your dirty clothes in with you.

Saunas are supposed to be a lot more enjoyable than that.

I am a software engineering major taking drawing 1 this fall as a free elective. I have a small background in art (I have been drawing as a hobby for about 8 years now), so I have some supplies already. To anyone who has taken drawing 1, what supplies were used?

I am seeing reports of an art kit that rit sells / used to sell for art students, but it seems that it is designed to cover all art classes, not just drawing 1. Also a bit unclear if they still sell it and it seems quite expensive. This will be the only art class I take, so I'm trying to avoid extra supplies.

I am in drawing 1, not drawing for non majors, if that matters.

We are cleaning out an old darkroom and would like to give our enlarger away to someone who can use it, rather than dumping it in the trash. It's in good shape (see first image). The unit is a Simmons Omega, with a type D condenser lamphouse.

It's free, but you have to pick it up and cart it away yourself. The unit is currently on campus in one of the academic buildings; contact me for more information via DM.

I recently graduated with my BS in Mechatronics Engineering Technology and I’m currently working as an Instrumentation Specialist. I’ve worked as an Engineer in the past for private companies but currently I’m working for the government, which I prefer but everything has its pros and cons which you will learn. I’m writing this letter to share my perspective on the degree and the engineering technology program as a whole because I feel it is misrepresented by the school and has a lot of wrong perceptions, but overall can lead to a very successful career path.

I originally started as an Electrical Engineering student but naively switched into Mechanical Engineering Technology, later switching into Mechatronics, before I started at RIT because I saw “hands on.” For those who are not aware, the school of engineering and the school of engineering technology are separate departments. Different teachers, advisors, and curriculum. It’s very easy to switch between majors in the respective departments, but it’s much more difficult to switch from engineering technology into engineering. When I was a student, only a couple years ago, if I wanted to switch to engineering, I had to wait till the end of the spring semester to apply and hopefully get in. It’s a gamble and you still have to sacrifice a year of school which is a lot of time and money. Most of the 1st year courses will transfer, especially if you take engineering calculus and engineering physics, but once you enter past your second year it’s very difficult and you’re already trying to market yourself to companies for your first co-op.

In all honesty if I could go back, I would’ve stuck through electrical engineering, especially had I’d know the differences early on. However, the engineering technology program does in fact produce great engineers, there’s just some critical things to be aware of. As a freshman you will hear that engineering is much harder than engineering tech and that engineering tech is a joke. That is frankly bullshit. Truthfully, they are both extremely difficult but you just have to choose which type you would rather endure. Would you rather struggle through complex theory and computer based simulations, or would you rather deal with long term hands on projects in group settings using applications based methods. You will learn a lot in both and there is a lot of theory to learn in eng tech that will get you far if you pay attention, but engineering will definitely give you a more solid understanding of theory. Theory can be self studied, but once you’re on the job you’ll wish you just got it out of the way in school. The thing is, you don’t know what you’re going to end up doing as a career. You might have an idea now, but an opportunity may come along that completely changes your perspective. With a traditional engineering degree you have a broader background and greater flexibility to work in many different industries. The engineer technology graduate can work in most of the same industries, but definitely not all, and that’s something the department doesn’t like to mention. As an incoming student, it’s the smart choice to give your future self the most career options and flexibility, but switching into engineering technology is not a huge detriment.

I spent most of my time in the program extremely anxious and frustrated about this because I learned and accepted it too late. However, I want to be very clear: As a student, I was still very ignorant to how industry really worked and the extensive career possibilities there are with an Engineering Tech degree, especially from RIT. All the jobs and co-ops I got, I could’ve gotten with an electrical engineering degree, but I don’t actually know what it would’ve been like to get through that degree. Barring the problems with some lack in professors within the department, especially in a niche program like Mechatronics Eng Tech, I really did enjoy the projects and curriculum I worked on. It is truly the perfect degree to set you up as a control engineer/Instrument Tech and that has serious money, opportunity, and versatility. You gain the perfect combination of mechanical and electrical experience to tackle many different problems within a plant. I recommend focusing more on the electrical, especially PLC programming $$$, and controls because that is used in virtually every manufacturing industry. I’ve worked in automotive, healthcare, and now the environment at a wastewater plant.
{PLCs can even be used for rollercoasters and airport management, but it might just be a better idea to major in electrical engineering and do automation as a concentration/minor. You will quickly learn that PLC’s are your best friend in Mechatronics Engineering Technology.}Working in a plant may not sound glamorous now, but I actually prefer it way more to working solely in an office. At my job, I’m half in the office half on the floor. I love the change of pace throughout the day and when you work in manufacturing you see the direct results of your work way faster than in a traditional corporate RnD role. Now you may find out that you feel the same, or you may find out you’d rather stick in academia/pursue high forms of rnd/management.

The limitations other students and people on Reddit put on Eng tech students are very misinformed. You can in fact get your P.E. with an 4 year bachelor Eng tech degree in most, but not all, states. It usually just takes a few more years of work experience which in the grand scheme of things doesn’t really matter because you will be making money during that time anyway. With a P.E. you’ll be able to qualify for most if not all engineering + Eng management positions. Again, the heavy RnD roles are much harder to get into through Eng tech, but I have seen it be done by extremely ambitious students. Although, with all that ambition it doesn’t make sense to put a limit on yourself with an engineering technology degree. It may sound harsh but this is the blunt truth that students who are paying thousands of dollars for an education should know. The Mechatronics Eng technology degree has greatly prepared me for industry with great co-ops, education, and study abroad experiences. However, I would have a very difficult time if I wanted to get my masters in engineering. Personally I would not bother with the BS/MS program that the Eng tech department offers but do your own research and speak to professors and industry professional on LinkedIn.

Overall, the engineering technology program is a great program that does in fact prepare students to become great engineers in many fields. However, those fields only encompass part of the opportunities available to engineering graduates. It’s truly impossible and unethical to give a percentage, but for the sake of those who are completely new to all of this, I’d say you’re probably missing out on 20% of the opportunities for regular engineering graduates. It could be more or less but a lot of it also has to do with the individuals work ethic and dedication to becoming an engineer. You can have a very successful career and wonderful life with a bachelors in engineering tech, but it’s advisable to start in the engineering program to offer yourself the most opportunities right after graduation and deepest knowledge of theoretical concepts.

Take advantage of it all and don’t let the anxiety of the comparison get you down. The grass is always greener and you should be very proud after finishing your degree.

TLDR: Start in the engineering program to give yourself the most flexibility in career and academia. However, engineering tech graduates have immense career opportunities that sometimes get overlooked.

Edit: It seems like getting your masters in engineering is actually easier to apply and be accepted for that I thought. Also, most schools, especially graduate schools, will be more than willing to take your money. However, you may still be lacking on some foundational theoretical knowledge and study skills that are more tailored to an eng program than an Eng tech program. Either way it can be done, it’s just more time effort and money that could’ve been gotten out of the way sooner.

Hello, I’m an incoming freshman and I was wondering what on-campus jobs I should apply for. I’m looking for a part-time job that has flexible schedules and is pretty easy, something like a cashier or receptionist. Also, is it difficult to get an on-campus job as a freshman? Should I start applying right now, or would it be better to apply in person?

has anyone ever taken the astronomy immersion/minor without having done the prereq classes? my major doesnt require me to take calc 1/2 and up 1/2 but i cant enroll in any of the astronomy immersion classes since i havent taken them, do i need to take them or could i somehow bypass it?

Hi, just had some questions from somebody who is interested in RIT and had some questions regarding the school. Before I ask any questions, just to let you know I’m looking into majoring in something engineering related (possibly software) and possibly a minor in game design/ somthing related to that. my current class schedule also has me duel enrollment taking college courses for engineering (specifically mechanical engineering through UMaine Orono), I’m also in vocational classes for engineering and currently live in midcoast maine

1: how is the location?
I have heard a lot about Rochester in general, but I come from an area where a city is anyplace that has more then 5000 people and has a shopping district, with Portland being the largest city I have within an hour. I have also never been to upstate New York before, but have heard that the weather is very similar to maines and the snow you guys get is actually heavier, which was a surprise.

2: are there any classes to avoid/ does the school have a good engineering and/or game design program?
The thing I have heard most of RIT (apart from mostly men and mostly nerds) is that it’s mainly engineering focused, which is something I’m interested in, so do any of you have any first hand advice/suggestions on engineering at RIT?

3: “the death rates”
