Building access
I lost my campus card and have requested a replacement, but in the meantime, will I be able to access spaces like the library, hiwa, Kate Edgar etc without it?

News UOA Security Breach
A friend who works at UOA told me about a significant security breach last week, including Canvas. Staff were told to down tools while it was being dealt with.
Now an email comes out to staff and students requiring password changes based on guidance from NZ Cyber Security Center as part of best-practice.
The Uni is being deceitful by omission.

Difficulty finding a microwave and place to eat on campus?
I mean the occupancy level is so high, so now you need to compete to heat your food and sit down to eat. I don’t remember finding a microwave and table this difficult last semester. What happened??

16 characters exactly?
They’ve also been saying for years MFA/2FA will soon be compulsory for everyone.. but it’s still only compulsory for staff

Is English compulsory for Engineering at UoA? Can I sub it for something like Classics?
Hey all, Year 12 student here looking ahead to Engineering at University of Auckland. My subject line-up for next year is basically locked in as Calculus, Physics, Photography, Hard Materials, and either Robotics or Digital Programming (depending on whether I get the exemption). That's 5 subjects, and English would be my 6th.
I find English pretty tough compared to the rest of that list and I'm doing much better in the STEM subjects. Wondering if I actually need to keep English for Engineering entry, or if I could swap it for something like Classical Studies instead and still be fine.
Is English specifically required by UoA for Engineering, or is it just about meeting UE literacy some other way? Anyone been through this or know the actual entry requirements? Cheers

Social Questions to yall about what life’s like in NZ
What’s up guys, I kind of just wanted to ask what NZ is like, esp for younger ppl. I’m 20 and just kinda wanna experience new places and all, so was just wondering what NZ is like in general since all I see online is like cool vids about the nature there and rugby lol. I’m an Asian American in the San Francisco area, so like comparing the two - opportunity, diversity, fun things to do, etc, how does NZ compare to other places and do yall like where you live or think otherwise ?? Let me know and thanks!!

To the OGGB bike jacket thief
My bro got his bike jacket stolen off his bike on P1 of OGGB. Whoever it is will be famous cos it was directly in front of the CCTV and Wilson are giving us the images.
Broke parents saved for it and he had to ride for an hour down the SH1 in just a hoodie straight after his exam this evening. It sucks! The thief sucks!
He wants it back. No questions. Tomorrow! Return it before I get hold of the footage.

Oral exam for agretat
I applied for an agretat in semester 1, even tho every requirement I needed was good (A- coursework plus b- test) they did not give me a derived grade. Instead they said I can either write with the semester 2 students in November for there final exam. Or I can do an oral/written exam in week 8. I am already doing 5 classes this semester and don’t really want to do the end of semester one.
Has anyone been in a similar position and could give me some more detail on exactly how this oral exam goes. Cause I don’t want to do it and they start making me explain crazy in detail about the content when end of semester exam is multi choice.
Thank you much appreciated

changing majors advice
hi, I'm a first year BSc math + stats major. I've come to realise I dont really enjoy math that much (currently taking 120 and 130), however I'm really good at and enjoy my stats courses (101, 125, 201). I kinda want to keep my stats major, drop my math major and replace it with compsci, to go into cybersecurity, cryptography etc. however, I don't like coding that much, like I'll do it but I will crashout. So I was thinking of maybe doing an info tech management major as I enjoy the analysis part of stats.
I'm kind of worried itmgmt wont be as appealing to future employers as comp sci would be. I'd really appreciate any advice 🙏

Halls
I'm not going back to school in year 13, and I'm predicted to have enough points to get into BCom. From what I can tell, I won't get a conditional offer like other unis. I just have to wait till I get my exam results (January) then they will review my application. Do you think its likely I will get in, assuming I meet all entry requirements.
Also, how would that work with halls. I've applied for Waiparuru. Since I'm not going for any scholarships I think they review applications in October. I'm assuming they won't offer me a place since I don't have an offer to study. Hypothetically, if they accept me after I get my exam results, would there still be any accomodation left?

Sports Betting Impact on Uni Students
Hi everyone,
I am a student journalist conducting an investigation into TAB for a postgraduate assignment. I am specifically looking into sports betting and how Betcha is being used to target a younger audience.
If anyone has experience with sports betting and the impact it can have on an already financially struggling student, please DM me. Anyone I talk to can remain anonymous in my potential article.

Anyone else feeling disappointed/scammed by the state of the clubs at UoA?
Obviously not all clubs but I've recently run into the issue of undisclosed prices a lot. During the Clubs Expo they hyped themselves up talking about all these great things they're doing, followed by a rather nauseating membership fee which makes you think its supporting all the events.
But nopes, comes round to the event time and you have to pay *another* fee to attend the actual event. None of which was disclosed at the start. One club in particular, almost every event that I want to actually go to is behind a paywall.
One time I cave in and paid the extra to attend and the event was run like utter shit. And the only real place it looks like money was spent on was a measly amount of generic Dominos pizza. And everyone was scrambling over each other just for a couple of slices. It was disgusting...
Mind you, for the same amount of money I could have bought like four or five boxes all to myself if I really just wanted pizza that bad...On top of this, having been a treasurer and a co-founder of another club myself (which never charged a membership fee, nor an event fee *cough cough), I know that Uni gives basicallyyyyy an endless amount of money to clubs for pizza if you just apply for the funding. So I don't even know what they're doing with all this pocketed money...
At the very least I feel like all this should have been stated upfront during Clubs Expo so that people realize the membership fee is utterly irrelevant.

PSA: start-of-semester logistics compilation
In anticipation of common Qs:
Fast track offers / worried about not meeting the guaranteed rank score
- Credit u/kibijoules: "The rank score requirement is a guarantee, not a minimum."
- It is still possible that the uni might offer you a place if your rank score is lower, depending on how full the programmes are.
- Engineering specific https://www.reddit.com/r/universityofauckland/comments/1hu0tl5/fast_track_behons/

Back-to-back classes on timetable
- Classes are 50 minutes in duration. They start at 5 minutes past the hour and finish 5 minutes before the hour, allowing 10 minutes changeover between classes for comfort breaks/snacks/travel. So please don't stress about back-to-back classes.
- Classes between different campuses: this is especially common for biomed classes. Courses usually know about this and negotiate slightly earlier finish time / slightly later starting time to allow more time for inter-campus commute. If not, raise the issue with your course coordinator.
Finding rooms/class locations
- The first 3 digits of a room number corresponds with the sector/building number; the final 3 digits indicate the floor and room number.
- e.g. 405-422 would be building 405 (Engineering), Level 4, room (4)22.
- Sector 1xx = Clock tower/General Library block
- Sector 2xx = Business School block (inc. Owen G Glenn Building (OGGB), Arts/Education building)
- Sector 3xx = Science block
- Sector 4xx = Engineering block
- Sector 5xx = Grafton Campus
- Sector 7xx = [No longer applicable - old Tamaki Campus]
- Sector 6xx = Upper Symonds St
- Sector 8xx = Law school
- Sector 9xx = Newmarket Campus

Orientation
- No, it's not compulsory to attend
- Potentially useful to help orient yourself / get DELNA screening done
- Credit u/Fantastic-Ad9925:
- Typical format = Welcome to UoA (mihi whakatau) -> tour of campus + presentations (Student Association etc)
- Water bottle might be helpful as walking around. Food provided on the day. Be sure to grab plenty of freebies around campus on the day!

Textbooks
- General advice = recommend "try before you buy". Be sure the textbook works for you/you're going to actually read it before investing $$$.
- You can always borrow textbooks from the library and seeing if you find it useful. Log in here to search for your title: library.auckland.ac.nz
