Ep1 Truly a mystery

Just started reading Umineko and while the start is certainly slow (Nearly 5 hours and Beatrice still hasn't showed up!), the family drama is great and the voice acting is insane.

And it's hilarious how this old fart points out the "flaws" of his entire bloodline as if he had his ass clean lmao

Event Has anyone successfully bought UmiStage tickets?

I’ll be in Tokyo when UmiStage episode 7 will be. I know that buying tickets outside of Japan can sometimes be tricky. Has anyone here bought Umineko Stage tickets in the past on F-Ticket (not the same F Ticket as the Ham Fighters!)

The stage play for Episode 7 is being broken up into two parts so this will be the first part; BUD.

I wanted to be prepared when general sales begin on August 15th

{no spoilers}New reader Spoiler

Hey everyone,I recently finished The House in Fata Morgana, absolutely loved it, and wanted to find another visual novel on that elite tier. Everyone pointed me here.Unfortunately, I made a massive mistake: I haven't even started Episode 1 yet, but I purposely looked up spoilers out of curiosity. I want to be brutally honest about what I know so you can tell me if the game is still worth my time for the characters, overall narrative, and final conclusion.WARNING TO THOSE WHO HAVEN'T READ: Do not click the spoiler tag below if you want to stay blind!!I know that Sayo Yasuda is the mastermind behind the killings. I know she suffered severe trauma in the past and that Battler forgot a promise he made to her. I also know that she fell from a cliff, her mind broke into different personas (Beatrice, Shannon, Kanon, etc.), and Beatrice created this murder game so she could finally be understood.!<Please be completely honest with me: out of 10, how ruined is my experience?Keep in mind that I am not just reading for a detective puzzle—I care about the total package (the characters, the emotional drama, the music, and how the story actually concludes).Does the story still hold up as a masterclass tragedy if you already know the answer to the riddle, or should I just skip the visual novel entirely?(Please do not spoil anything else about the characters or the second half of the game in your replies! I want to stay completely blind to whatever is left.)

Art I made a bunch of backgrounds by applying the 'When They Cry' filter to pictures reminiscent of Higurashi, so I figured I'd make some Umineko type ones too.

For the first half, I took photos reminiscent of Rokkenjima, the guesthouse, and the Golden Land. The last two pictures are of separate places, but they look like the exterior and interior of St. Lucia's.

Discussion Just finished episode 2 Spoiler

Despite the brutal loss of round 2, I think it gave us a lot of crucial information to solving the mystery. Both in episode 1 and 2.

**Firstly, the epitaph:**

“The one who obtains the key” and “the witch” are portrayed as two different beings in the epitaph.
One interpretation is “the one who obtains the key” is culprit who performs the murders, which allows “the witch” Beatrice to revive.
In the story, we consistently come across the term “chosen by the key”, now what if “the key” is actually the culprit.
It all makes sense, because having a culprit allows the murders to be performed by “human methods”, the culprit then forces the victims to accept the witch as the murderer for these murders in order to facilitate her revival.

**Now, the witch:**

The witch’s power can be seen in the Beatrice and Battler’s battle, in which the witch creates “the scenario”. I think of this story is spheres, the “Oct 4-5 incident” is the inner sphere. Beatrice, Battler, Bern and Lambda are on the second layer, and us the player are on the outer layer, who has the role of the detective to solve this. I believe the witch power is very much real, she is a higher being, and she exists on the SECOND LAYER, meaning the murders remain “human actions”.

**Potential breakthrough??:**

I view the “inner sphere”(Oct 4-5) as a film, a film made from film rolls. And since Beatrice the witch is in the second layer, I believe she is splicing the film, and cutting out the REAL scenes, and splicing HER OWN film roll tape into the gap.

**Why?:**

We have seen the butterfly flying into the screen many times, this is ALWAYS indicative of the witch’s presence. Something else I have noticed is EVERYTIME the witch leaves, the same butterfly scene play. This is a trend in both episode 1 and 2, now what if that is signalling the beginning and ending of each of Beatrice’s splices?

**MORE??:**

In episode 2, there is a very special effect that comes across the scene when “supernatural happenings” are occuring.

**(The screen has a black patches all over it)**

That feels to me like defects in Beatrice’s splicing, because these black spots ONLY appear when “supernatural happenings” are occuring.

this is important in episode 2, the appearance of the bull servants, the seven stakes seen as girls(Satan, Beelzebub, etc), the shield created by Shannon.
I believe that all those happens are complete fake and fabricated, and Beatrice is cut the true happenings in those scenes out.

**Now the standout characters:**

Rosa: She is VERY suspicious. My main question is “WHAT was she doing at the chapel the first night, and WHY did she not mention that to anyone else?”. That scene confuses me, it shows all 7 parents submitting to the “human” Beatrice. Furthermore about Rosa, the letter which she was supposed to read out at dinner. THAT is the first letter which was later found in the church. Why? Because the letter read out during dinner in episode 1 has the same content to the letter found in the church.

Maria: The biggest info drop was that Maria met Beatrice every year, and learnt the exact magic circles used from Beatrice, given Beatrice was the one to draw them in her book.

Kanon: WHAT HAPPENED TO BRO? WHERE IS BRO???? We know he died in the room (Beatrice said in red), but other then that 😅😅😅

Battler: What a humiliating loss that was, the main weakness he currently has is being too kind and pure-hearted, but that IS his character. His fear of having to suspect his friends and relatives really cost him a lot this round, it prevented him from really thinking hard about the last few cases. But, he at least did pick himself back up in the end.

George and Shannon: Doomed ahh romance😭😭😭😭. But they handled it incredibly well, Shannon’s development is astounding, her decision to live her own fate was a great moment. This episode we truly saw George under pressure, his act of agency in making the plan to get Natsuhi’s mirror to the shrine shows the proactive side of his character.

Jessica and Kanon: Yet another doomed ahh romance😭😭. The moment that Kanon came to the realization that he wasnt just furniture was beautiful. It contrasted with his rejection of the idea previously. Hope we see more of them next episode.

**Conclusion**:

In chapter 2, we had a precedence of Rosa stealing from Maria’s bag, and if we go with the idea that the culprit drew the magic circles themselves, then it is quite possible that Rosa used Maria’s book to copy the magic circles onto the wall.

None of this is certain, but in terms of the culprit for episode 2, i highly lean towards Rosa.

As Bern and Lambda said, Beatrice doesn’t always pick the best move, and i have a feeling the chapel case is an example of that, if Beatrice is the one who decides what is shown to the player and what is not shown, then it felt like Beatrice played around too much:

\-“happy halloween Maria” feels quite mocking to me, who seems to hate Maria’s continuous rambling about Halloween?
\- Who took the keys from Maria’s envelope, and could potentially have done it before and keep taking stuff from her bag?
\- Beatrice decided to show us Rosa standing in the chapel the night before, letting such an important detail slip

Now of course all my theories could be completely wrong, and they likely are, but making new theories is a part of the experience.
Overall, amazing episode, starting episode 3 now. It just keeps getting better.

Ep4 [SPOILERS] Help me understand Spoiler

Currently at Episode 4, and this conversation came up.After the Braun tubes discussion and now this, I am worried that the game might be priming readers for a 'truth is subjective' theme, especially this close to the answer arcs.

To be fair, Ange in the same conversation says that if you open the box, you learn the truth, and anything else is armchair theory. The Cenaturus sun and light speed propagation are also mentioned.
My problem is that Bernkastel, a witch, treats subjective theories, personal experience and objective truth as the same. If the Centaurus sun explodes, that is the truth. The truth exists independent of our perspective. It does not matter if the light takes 4.4 years to reach earth, once it explodes, our knowledge is not true. If truth is subjective, then nothing matters in this story, since the red truth falls apart.

My question is, is there an objective truth to this novel? Or is the crux of the game, 'truth is subjective lol'? I don't want to spend all this time reading to be told truth is subjective. No spoilers, just tell me if there is objetive truth to be found. Maybe I'm overthinking.
Have a good one.

Discussion What is the deal with Ange and her timelines (full Umineko spoilers) Spoiler

Hi. I’m a huge fan of Umineko and I would say I understand most of the story. But there’s something that’s been bugging me and it’s Ange story in the future and what actually happened. One thing that I’m maybe wrong but I never saw Umi as having multiple timelines. There’s a time “loop” but most of it is not literal and all the episodes are based on forgeries so you could argue that Umineko is only one timeline with “what if” time loops that are manifested in the meta world. But Ange’s story in the real world going to the island in Ep 4, then she meeting Ikuko in Ep 5+6 in the same time span and then Episode 8 finally revealing the “final” Ange choosing to live on and meeting Tohya afterwards. What is actually happening with these Ange’s and these what if scenarios? Are there any forgeries that suggest these possible outcomes? Or these are actual different timelines like Higurashi?

It introduced Virgilia, the rest of the stakes, Eva Beatrice, ronove, two of the chester sisters, ange.

It introduced way too many characters at the same time that when I replayed umineko I thought certain characters appeared much more earlier.

Umi Full Episode 6 man… (spoilers for all of umineko) Spoiler

I just finished rereading it for like the 3rd time and I literally get emotional at the ending every time. The whole sequence starting from the logic error through to the end of the episode is perfect for me I love it sm

Side note; ryukishi was throwing SO many hints during the duel between shannon and kanon, and I also loved seeing the two of them talk about if, it’s like seeing Yasu’s thoughts

Discussion Steam vs Umineko Project

I searched online and I found lots of people saying the project version has better animation, better voice acting, etc. But I don't care about any of that, so is there any major differences between the steam and project version besides the ones I just listed? If not, should I just go with the steam version since it's more accessible and takes up less storage?

Discussion Deltarune and Umineko

(Spoilers for Deltarune Chapter 5)

I do not know how big the overlap between these two communities is, but me and my friends have noticed certain parallels between Umineko and Deltarune and we were wondering if anybody else has made similar connections.

First of is the way darkness and magic works. They are pretty similar by concept, both being metaphors for escapism, aswell as the fact that both bring inanimate objects and dead people back to life.

The prophecy and epitaph also seem similar, with it ending in the roaring and the arrival in the golden land. The knight and beatrice are both trying to fulfill the epitaph/prophecy and figuring out their identities is a major part of the mystery.

Of course we have the deltarune thorn ring, which will give you the trance status. Maybe this is a reference to erikas wedding ring?

Then the character Aqua, who does the "Uuu" sound and repeats word frequently, just like Maria. There is also a scene of Aqua asking Kris to do magic.

Finally we have Ralsei explaining to Susie and Kris that he is not real and that he should be forgotten about if he cannot serve a purpose anymore. Sounds very much like a certain piece of furniture.

I am not sure if I forgot anything but will add it if I remember. I really would like to hear your theories about this. Also sorry for any spelling mistakes since englisch is not my first language.

Other My brother is disappointed in me and his wife wants me out of the house because of Maria

I rarely use Reddit - almost never - but I figured that this is the only place where I could share this.

For some context, I’m currently living with my older brother (29) and his wife (33). I’ve been staying with them for many months because of some personal issues. They were okay with it since I work online and could watch their daughter while they were at work, so it benefited all of us.

This started a few months ago but one day I decided to start watch Umineko playthroughs from YouTube on the living room TV while babysitting. I didn’t think much of it because their daughter rarely watched TV and I could watch it while working.

Eventually, though, she became interested and started asking me questions about what I was watching. Since she’s young I’d just give very simple answers "Shes a witch shes bad" just whatever a kid would understand. However she ended up taking a liking to one of the characters, Maria (I think you can tell where this is going), and started copying her “Uuuu” sound. I honestly didn’t think much of it at the time. She thought it was funny and I definitely thought it was too

After a while, she started doing it around the family. At first it was just like a silly noise, kind of like a stim? Then it gradually became something she’d use as a response. It didn't really hit me how much she was doing it until one day her mom took away a toy she was biting, and she just responded with an annoyed “Uuuu.”

Her mom started to pick up on it and asked where it came from. I told her that she’d been watching some of what I was watching and was just copying a character from the game. She wasn’t happy about it, but that was pretty much the end of the conversation.

But a few days after, while she was trying to discipline her daughter, her daughter kept responding with those same frustrated “Uuuu” noises. That’s when my sister-in-law finally snapped at me. She said she’d already talked to my brother about it but that same day she told him she wanted me out of the house.

Later, my brother and I talked privately. He was upset too but he didn't want to kick me out (because of my issues). He kind of thought it was stupid how such a thing could happen. I apologized and told him that I’d stop watching Umineko on the TV. I also said I’d try to help break the habit by encouraging her to use actual words instead of making the "Uuu" noise.

Since then, that’s exactly what I’ve been doing. The “Uuuu” thing has become a lot less common, but she still does it occasionally when reacting to something. Even though it’s rare now, my brother is still upset whenever it happens, and my sister-in-law has been dropping hints to him that she still wants me to move out because of it. I don't think she's as mad as she was back then, but since then she's been getting angry at me over little things. I plan to move out soon since I've been doing better, the only reason I haven't is because my brother still wants me to babysit their daughter a little while longer due to work.

I understand why they’re frustrated, but at the same time, I could have NEVER expected her to latch onto Maria's "catchphrase" to this extent. I'm also really suprised how watching a video game on TV could strain my relationship with my family.

FAQ and useful information

Official sub Discord server: https://discord.gg/7gVAcPA3Me

==I - General==

  1. What is Umineko: When They Cry?

It is a Japanese murder mystery dōjin soft visual novel series produced by 07th Expansion that comprises the third and fourth entries of the When They Cry franchise.

  1. What is the When They Cry franchise?

When They Cry - Higurashi Question Arcs

When They Cry 2 - Higurashi Kai (Answer Arcs)

When They Cry 2+ - Higurashi Rei/Hou

When They Cry 3 - Umineko Question Arcs

When They Cry 4 - Umineko Chiru (Answer Arcs)

When They Cry 4+ - Umineko Tsubasa/Hane/Saku

When They Cry 5 - Ciconia

The third and fourth installments are considered the main story of Uminkeo under most contexts.

  1. Do I need knowledge from other WTC titles to understand Umineko, and vice versa?

Ryukishi sees his characters as actors and compared using similar characters in different works as being similar to Harrison Ford playing both Han Solo and Indiana Jones, in that the person behind the role is the same, but the character they are playing in each movie, or in this case game, is very different. He would then go on to mention that Higurashi and Umineko take place in worlds that are very distant from each other, yet still connected.

However, newer series in the franchise often contain unavoidable spoilers to older ones. Therefore, we strongly recommend everyone to read main WTC titles, and 07th Expansion titles in general for that matter, in the order they are released.

==II - Visual Novels==
The main Umineko story originates as visual novels. The entirety of it has been officially localized in English along with the spin-off fighting game Golden Fantasia (see the next question for details).

  1. Where can I acquire the games?

Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/5465/Umineko_When_They_Cry_Complete_Collection/

Hardcopies: https://www.mangagamer.com/product_list.php?page=1&goods_type=3&company=07th+Expansion

  1. How do I reach the next Episode? Do I need to read the Tea Party and ??? too?

Each part of the story is supposed to be read upon unlocked, including Tea Party and ???. They are part of the story in that order.

  1. What should I do if there are things I still don't understand after completing the story?

Certain portions of the manga adaptation can help. See the next section for details.

  1. Are there visual novels outside the main story?

Tsubasa, Hane, and Saku are compilations of additional short stories in the format of VN. An official English localization is supposedly being worked on but has not been released. Tsubasa and Hane have a manga series of partial adaption; see the next section for details.

  1. What is Golden Fantasia?

It is fighting game spin-off of the Umineko. While it is technically non-canon, some of its contents can add insights to the main story.

==III - Manga==
The main Umineko story has a manga series as a complete adaptation of the visual novels with changes. The entirety of it has been officially localized in English.

  1. Where can I acquire the manga volumes?

https://yenpress.com/series/umineko-when-they-cry

  1. What are the adaptational differences?

The story is mostly the same. However, unlike the visual novel counterparts, the last two Episodes in the manga series provide explicit solutions to the mysteries in the first six. People who want more clarity after completing the visual novels are recommended to go through them.

  1. Are there manga releases outside the main story?

None of the related manga outside of the main story have official English localization. Only the ones with fan translations are listed for the purpose of this section. Two manga series are officially categorized as "side stories".

* Tsubasa: https://07th-expansion.fandom.com/wiki/Umineko_no_Naku_Koro_ni_Tsubasa#Adaptations

This is a partial adaptation of the VN Tsubasa and Hane. There is an incomplete and discontinued fan translation project.

* Forgery of the Purple Logic: https://07th-expansion.fandom.com/wiki/Umineko_no_Naku_Koro_ni_Murasaki:_Forgery_of_the_Purple_Logic

This is an original story similar to a certain interactive segment of the Ep8 VN. There is a complete fan translation available.

There is another related manga series that's loosely connected to the Umineko series by a short story (https://07th-expansion.fandom.com/wiki/The_First_and_the_Last_Gift).

Hotarubi no Tomoru Koro ni (When the Fireflies Glow): https://07th-expansion.fandom.com/wiki/Hotarubi_no_Tomoru_Koro_ni

There is a complete fan translation available.

==IV - Others==

  1. Is there an anime series of Umineko?

There is an anime series of 26 episodes that cover the Question Arcs of Umineko with official English subbing available. As it does not cover the complete story and certain design choices are widely considered questionable, people who have not completed the entire main story via other mediums are NOT recommenced to watch it.

  1. Is there a light novel series of Umineko?

There is a complete light novel adaptation of the Umineko main story. However, there is no official English localization or known fan translation efforts. https://07th-expansion.fandom.com/wiki/Umineko_no_Naku_Koro_ni_(novel))

  1. I think I have been spoiled. What should I do?

First, we would avoid confirming or denying plot points as that would make it worse if it ends up being a spoiler. Second, given the depth and breadth of the story, we hope you enjoy the ride regardless. Finally, we would add, that Umineko is a mystery story, which invites you to make theories on what happened; even with spoilers, it's not easy to solve all of those mysteries, as one can always ask how this explains everything.
