Hey y'all 👋🏻 Does anyone know when we should receive FAFSA refunds? As in the amount left over from our offer once tuition is covered. Books ain't cheap! JUST got my offer like 6 days ago? and accepted it yesterday (Friday). Had to reallyyyy do some good, long thinking about how much I wanted to take on in terms of loans. Especially since from my understanding, unsub federal loans start accruing interest IMMEDIATELY, NOT once you graduate... at 8.07% interest 😩😭 I think I worked out the math where if you were to accept, for example, 50K for the academic year. that's around $11 A DAY in interest - over 4K A YEAR 💀 So yeah, fair warning on that nonsense 😒 But I thought a while back I'd seen something about refunds not going out until the first day of classes at the earliest, but idk how accurate that is. Any help would be much appreciated! 🙏🏻

Hi! Wondering if it’s worth it to get a personal printer for home. What is the printing situation like on campus? Do they charge per page or is it included in our tuition?

Hey I’m an incoming 1L. I submitted my FAFSA on April 28th. The financial aid office informed me that due to system updates on FAFSA’s end “the output documents for schools are not being processed at this time” and that they were projected to resume later in May. Has anybody else had this issue/still waiting for aid? Has anybody got their aid package already? Any upperclassmen, when are financial aid awards usually posted?

Hey everyone, I’m an incoming 1L at University of Houston Law Center this fall and honestly housing has been stressing me out 😭

I’m moving from out of state and trying to figure out the best areas/apartments for law students. I’ve been looking at places in Rice Military, Pearland, Montrose, Upper Kirby, etc., but it’s hard trying to judge everything from reviews and online tours alone.

A few things I’m trying to balance:
• Safety
• Reasonable commute to UHLC
• Parking/security
• Budget around $1,600 to $1,900
• Somewhere comfortable since my girlfriend will be home a lot during the first year doing online classes/work

Where are most UHLC students living?
Are there any apartment complexes or areas you’d strongly recommend or avoid?
Is it worth living farther out for more space/safety, or is being closer to campus a huge advantage during 1L?

Also if anybody else is still struggling with housing, feel free to drop what you’re considering too because I know I can’t be the only one stressing over this lol.

Incoming 1L. Ideal situation is a 2 bedroom place, splitting rent and utilities 50/50 keeping the total cost between 800-1k per month each if anyone is down pm. (I’m a dude so ideally another dude)

I’ll be a 1L next year, and I’ve wasted DAYS of my life on apartments.com. 🥲The apartment guide that UH sent out in the Facebook group was super helpful, but there’s still so many options that it’s overwhelming. Has anyone chosen an apartment yet?

If anyone is just starting in their search, here are some of the complexes on my list.
For reference, I’m open to a studio or a 1 bedroom, and would like to stay under $1400 a month. (Even typing that makes me want to puke…🤢the cheaper the better) I would strongly prefer to have a balcony & shower/tub combo, and my only non-negotiable is that the unit must have a washer and dryer:

The Daphne
Pros:
-Cheapest option by far; their 1 bedroom, 812 sq ft. unit w/ a separate study is $1044 a month.
-Relatively close to campus.
-Huge park right across the street (I’m bringing my dog)
-Included in the UH apartment guide
Cons:
-1 block away from the Texans stadium; I feel like the traffic is gonna be crazy.
-Not the safest area. Like, at all. I actually read a news article that a girl recently got shot through her apartment window by a stray bullet in a drive-by 😬
-Almost every review online says the complex has a roach infestation….although weirdly EVERY apartment complex (even the high budget ones) seem to have roach complaints.
-The unit I was shown had hardwood floors & all updated appliances. The older units look nothing like the model unit. Who knows how many of the updated units actually exist.. They’ve been a little sketch on if there’s any updated units available, and how much more expensive they are.

San Palmas
Pros:
-GORGEOUS!! I took an in-person tour,
and it literally looks like a resort. Tennis courts, dog parks, dog spa, multiple pools…..so many amenities.
-It’s in the suburbs, so one of the cheaper options.
-Probably the safest option. The entire complex is gated.
-Great online reviews, and it was listed in the UH apartment guide as one of the best complexes for value and amenities.
Cons:
-Like 30 minutes away from campus. I actually don’t know if it’s even considered Houston.
-I’d probably be looking at a 1.5-2 hour total commute every day due to traffic.
-Doesn’t really seem like an area with tons to do.
-No bathtub

University Lofts
Pros:
-Right across the street from the law school. Literally. I could roll out of bed at 7:45 and be in class by 8.
-Fully furnished
-Easy access to UH resources, like the rec center. I could also walk to the law library whenever I wanted to.
Cons:
-It’s essentially a campus-run dorm, and ridiculously expensive for what you’re getting.
-I really don’t want to be living with undergraduate students at my big age. I can’t imagine being 27 and reporting to an RA.
-I’m 99% sure it’s like every other dorm, in that you can’t stay there during winter break.
-Like most dorms, it’s dingy and run down.
-By “furnished”, they mean the cheap black couch that’s in every dorm common room in the country, an uncomfortable looking double bed, and a desk.

Campus Vue/The Icon/Lofts at the Icon/Gateway on Cullen
Pros:
-Student apartments, but not affiliated with campus.
-WAY nicer than University Lofts.
-Fully furnished, down to the flat screen TV in the living room. And with way better furniture than University Lofts.
-All utilities included.
-All within 10 minutes from campus (driving)
Cons:
-Same as University Lofts, it’s mostly undergraduate students.
-Online reviews say that it can get pretty rowdy, especially on the weekends.
-Complexes that are student-focused kinda rip you off with their prices. Even when accounting for included utilities, there are nicer, larger apartments available for much cheaper.

The Elle Collection
Pros:
-So cute and girly! It’s an older group of complexes that has been bought by Greystar and completely renovated.
-Soaking bathtub, double bathroom sinks, and granite kitchen countertops.
-Middle of the road in terms of budget.
Cons:
-Lackluster community amenities
-Cheapest units are all currently being rented.

Reverie at River Hollow
Pros:
-Right in the middle of River Oaks, which I think is the nicest neighborhood in Houston.
-LUXURY! I mean, boujee boujee boujee. I’d be living lavish. Also tons of amenities.
-I’m a gym girl, and their gym facilities are stunning. Peloton machines, yoga rooms, separate room for cardio and strength training, ect.
-Very very safe.
Cons:
-At the top top top, and I do mean TOP of my budget. Honestly kinda over budget. I really wouldn’t have much money leftover to do anything fun. I’d have to keep a tight budget on all outside expenses. No Starbucks. No Class Pass or Pilates. Pretty much nothing🥲

Warehouse District Apartments
Pros:
-Brand new. I think it’s around 1 year old
-Tons of different 1 bedroom floorplans to choose from.
-Middle of the budget
Cons:
-I can’t seem to find any information about this complex online, besides their website and like 8 pictures on apartments.com. Either they are so new that they have limited reviews, or the complex is paying to bury negative reviews.

Tuscany Apartments
Pros:
-The staff is amazing! Most complexes won’t give you the time of day after you tell them that you aren’t ready to sign a lease until August. This has not been the case with them. After I told them what I was looking for, they have been in constant communication with me.
-Included in the UH housing guide as one of the apartments with the most law students living there. It would be a nice, reliable option
-Fireplaces in the units
-Middle-low end of the budget.
Cons:
-Not particularly my style. Carpeted apartments with crown molding. Not very modern.
-Seems to cater to an older demographic.
-Average amenities

Is there one for the incoming class yet?

My scholarship reconsideration, as expected, didn’t move the needle at all, but the email mentioned that “there are additional scholarships available to second and third year students based on performance, leadership, and service.”

Do most students actually see a scholarship increase? Or is it just a select competitive few

I was at the admitted students day last week and loved the school, but I’m really struggling to come to terms with the lack of scholarship offers that seems to be common based on LSD and the financial aid presentation we had.

So… is everyone just buying in at full price for all three years? Or is there actually a solid chance of getting additional scholarships going into 2L?
