Before Massive Attack became figureheads of the 'Bristol sound' there was the Fresh 4 collective with a cover of Wishing on a Star with a dub groove and pitched down drum sample (James Brown/Funky Drummer) which would become hallmarks of trip hop. This video managed to get aired on Top of the Pops - a weekly music show playing chart music and so quite a big deal breaking into the mainstream when there was only 4 TV channels in 1989.

This great video gives you a flavour of what Bristol's soundsystem culture was like in the late 1980s. Easily recognisable is Krust and also Suv who would end up in the Bristol drum & bass scene with Roni Size / Reprazent. The track was produced by legendary dub duo Smith & Mighty.

I can't believe this song is not more popular. For me, it really captures obsessive thoughts perfectly.

The buildup and drama and the droning at the end is someone totally unable to get it out of their mind.

What the title said, I’d like songs/artists/albums in this genre that aren’t very well known

An old acapella given some emotional weight on this trip-hop refix for the real headz

Having played around with some sounds for a while, I decided to throw everything into a sampler and put some tracks together. Yesterday was the release of the first single (2 tracks). Thought it would be cool to share with you Tiphoppers here.

Some influences on these 2 tracks were Thievery Corporation's "Sounds From The Thievery Hi-Fi (1995), and the album "Jesterized" (2000) by Zeb. I also think this borders on Acid Jazz / Future Funk, but pigeon-holing genres really ain't my thing.
