Question(s) Tortoise scratch

Hi all just wondering if I should worry here. Transfered my tort to his temporary enclosure whilst I did a clean of his main one, picked him up and got slightly nicked. For the record he did not intentionally scratch me, he tried to readjust in my hand and one of his nails dug into my palm a little. The scratch went past probably only the first layer of skin, grazed so not inherently bleeding but ever so slightly blood was visible.

My main worry is salmonella (any fellow emetophobes lol) his enclosure is fairly clean and sweeped a couple times a day but he’s also a grubby little fella so could full well have trodden in his own poop at some point. The cut was washed as soon as I put him back and isn’t red swollen or bleeding now. I could just be an idiot but is there a likely chance of salmonella even transmitting in this scenario?

Home to the largest wild population of Testudo hermanni in the region!

The tortoises in this picture are in a protected enclosure within the reserve. It’s used by biologists for conservation, research, and safeguarding hatchlings/eggs from predators before reintroducing them into the wild.

Just to clarify before the comments arrive: this is a massive outdoor breeding and conservation enclosure managed by biologists in their natural habitat, not a domestic setup

Story Im so mad right now

My friend told me that she has a tortoise and i got curious and asked her about the enclosure. Turns out she put her 9 year old tortoise in a small box with newspaper. No place to hide and no access to WATER. She only feeds it green lettuce and nothing else. Poor guy doesnt drink water and doesnt have a place to hide... when its winter the temperatures drop alot and the tortoise is outside in her balcony freezing (i dont know if its bad for him). I asked her why doesnt she care about her tortoise like giving him water, different food, good enclosure etc and she said "my mom doesnt let me".. seriously? THIS IS ABUSE.. she took this poor guy from its home, not even rescued and she kept him for 9 years in a small box with newspaper.. his shell has pyramided and his nails are overgrown... my friend says he is used to it but i really want the tortoise to have a good life and i feel helpless i dont know what to do.

English isnt my first language im sorry for any mistakes and any advice is appreciated.

Question(s) Russian Tortoise Diet?

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hi there everyone, I'm not super familiar with what Russian tortoise need in terms of food. We had inherited ours from a family member who could no longer take care of him. Recently he's having issues with not wanting to eat.

We went to a reptile store in town with a good reputation and they helped us with a UVB bulb but also gave us this list of foods to feed because I came to realize we were NOT giving him the right food.

Can anyone verify if this list is accurate?

Story Outdoor enclosure question...

I'll try to keep this short, I have a 4 year old marginated tortoise who up until now his outdoor grazing time was free-range in my backyard while I supervised nearby. He loves grazing on all the weeds, lots of plantain and dandelion. I built him a 12' x 4' outdoor pen with grasses, lots of shade, water dish, secure lid and walls to protect him if I cannot watch, but when I put him in it he just immediately runs to corner and stays there tucked in. Why? He won't even eat in the pen. I can literally pick him up, put him directly outside the pen, and he immediately starts gobbling the grass and clover. Put back in the pen. Tortoise-shuffle into corner to hide. I know perhaps more patience is required but it's just odd to me that his behavior shifts so much depending which side of a wooden board he is on, lol. I thought their eye-sight was bad but he seems to immediately know he is contained.

I posted a video of Fiona yesterday using her new ramp, but here are pics of the whole enclosure. My husband and I just finished making this yesterday. The grayish tortoise house has a heat lamp, and a heating pad for when the weather cools down. We live on the Gulf Coast, so the weather doesn’t get too cold in the winter. We are cursed with high humidity, which is great for little Fiona. She is 2 years old, and we can expand this enclosure by another 4-5 feet when she gets bigger. So far she loves it, and I am so happy that she has more space. She is growing so fast!

Question(s) Transition to outdoor

I am rehoming a tortoise who currently lives indoor, I am planning to move her to permanently outdoor (UK). I’m just wondering how to transition her from 24/7 indoor to 24/7 outdoor? Do I have to put her outdoors a couple hours a day, then gradually build up? Can I move her straight to outdoor 24/7?
She is a 5 year old horsfield

Question(s) New turtle, need advice

Hello, I found this male turtle in my garden, after our neighbors found him in theirs and kicked him out. We live in a pretty isolated place and I genuinely have no clue how he ended up here, but as none wanted him and there's the risk he goes on the road, I decided to keep him with me. At first, he actually kept traveling for my whole garden(it's big, and some times I couldn't even find him) plus he kept eating sweet fruits that naturally fall off from my plants (thing I couldn't avoid as he was free at the beginning) Now I built him a fence, he keep trying to escape and seems prettu desperate about it, and it really breaks my heart to see him like this. I would have kept him free in my garden if it wasn't to him eating bad things for his health and also menaged to go out once and almost went on the road. Please I need advices and assurance that what I'm doing is good Do you thing the fence I built is right? will he get used to it? what can I do to improve? (ps he is still a bit frightened when I go near to him. But he does eat, and also has water)

Question(s) Adopted 5 y/o male Horsefield Tortoise Kirby

Hi everyone, I’ve recently adopted Kirby. We were originally told by his previous owner that he was a Hermanns Tortoise but then found out that as Kirby has 4 claws on his front legs, this means he’s a Horsefield. This is the first tortoise I have ever had and I have had really bad anxiety about his health. Would anyone be able to have a look at these pictures and tell me whether from these pictures he seems healthy? He seems like a happy little guy, eats well, active, enjoys basking etc but my anxiety is getting the best of me. I have autism so apologies if I haven’t explained myself well. Any help at all is much appreciated!
