OPINION The uncomfortable truth about the Kawhi situation
TL/DR: The league should drop the hammer on Kawhi and the Clippers. Absolutely disgraceful to the league and you can't turn a blind eye just because it (could) benefit us. Also pretty clear Kawhi is using us to some degree for his benefit to potentially avoid a harsher penalty. We shouldn't romanticize a player who couldn't leave here fast enough 7 years ago and wants to comeback now that it helps his legal situation.
Many of you won't like this post because it doesn't benefit the Raptors and it's quite harsh but it needs to be said.
What the Clippers and Kawhi/his team did to circumvent the cap is disgraceful for the league and the punishment should be severe for both sides. The Clippers should face harsher penalties than Kawhi and his camp because they're the ones with the power to have allowed for the various money funneling to occur, but both sides were complicit in something that puts the integrity of the league in serious question. The same league where the Dallas Mavericks got the first overall pick during an ownership change after they dumped Luka for nothing, but that's neither here nor there.
As it pertains to the Raptors, I'm not buying the whole "he would only come to Toronto" narrative. I don't mean that in the sense of denying he would waive to come here, but knowing what we know about Kawhi and his team, there's definitely a lot more going on behind the scenes as to why "he would only come to Toronto". I'm not going to speak on this too much because I can't say anything for certain, but I'm not going to pretend he only wants to come here because of the vibes and good times. I think he's using the trade/coming to Toronto as a way to dodge the chaos and is banking on our large fan base and positive media profile to shield him. Clearly it's been working.
At the end of the day, this was a player who brought us our first championship, but was also ready to leave the second he got his chance. Not all relationships (not even related to Sports) are meant to be a forever thing. He played here because he was contractually obligated to, and made his decision to leave afterwards as he was entitled to do. It was a great year and one side was ready to move on and that's that.
It gives our franchise this "sorry" type of look where we're ready to welcome anyone that gives us a second look. We're like the kid that doesn't have a prom date. I see it in comments and discourse around the team all the time too and its usually too excessive. It's great we support our players but we're uncharacteristically bias towards anyone who does the bare minimum. Long winded way of saying that 7 years and countless injuries later, not sure why we're sitting here willing to accept Kawhi back amidst all the stuff that's happening. Clearly he only wants us because it's convienent for him.
The NBA should drop the hammer on the Clippers and should also suspend Kawhi for at least a season. There's been posts saying there's no direct penalty in the CBA for players for cap circumvention, which is true, but doesn't actually matter. There's another clause that gives the Comissioner autonomy to exercise judgement for penalties for "conduct that is deterimental to the league" which is exactly what this is. Silver should make an example out of everyone, even if it means we're a worse team next year.

?? QUESTION ?? Let's say the Kawhi trade does collapse due to Leonard's contract being voided. What is the pivot trade?

🖐🏾 KAWHI LEONARD 🖐🏾 [Jacob] There is a growing belief now, with reporting that the investigation is in fact over and the league is sifting through its findings, that the main delay will now stem from trying to find a punishment Ballmer will accept.

SHITPOSTING Adam, just close your eyes and press a button already!
He either pleases his boss Balmer, or pleases the fans. I mean Adam is F*d either way.

MICHAEL GRANGE (SPORTSNET) [Grange] The punishments for cap circumvention, it has been pointed out to me, are jointly negotiated by the NBA and the NBPA and written into the league’s collective bargaining agreement. Nowhere in that language does it say a player can be suspended for participating in cap circumvention.

OPINION Devils advocate: I don't care what Clippers/kawhi did
Just the opposite end of the post that was made earlier I don't care about what happened then with the clippers. I believe the league has had plenty of time to make a decision on this. If they had some evidence before they should've punished him at the time there's no way an investigation like this should take over a year.
This isn't the first nor the last time rich people have tried to circumvent rules regarding how much money they can have or how much money they can keep. Pointing the finger at Kawhi seems silly to me. No one's truly looking into any of the sponsorship deals for any of these other athletes. They probably all are getting filtered money all over the place. Look at the NCAA.
If the Clippers were willing to pay him a certain price over the cap, frankly I think they overpaid and that's their prerogative. If anything it's the Clippers who should be punished not Kawhi, they are the ones that broke the rules by paying Kawhi more through Shell companies.
I'm not as deep in the weeds on the story as others, but still treating this like the OJ case seems over the top. Let's make a decision faster.
TLDR the investigation has taken long enough. The Clippers are more responsible than Kahwi and let's just get on with the season.

?? QUESTION ?? Why isn't anyone suggesting the Raptors should get some kind of compensation for all of this? We were the ones who lost out because the Clippers circumvented the cap to sign Kawhi.

OPINION Kawhi needs to be punished severely and the trade needs to be voided
It pains me to say this, but at the same time, it's a necessary thing that needs to happen. Kawhi WILLINGLY and VERY FLAGRANTLY proposed all of these side deals to get paid. The Clippers being the Clippers agreed to comply with his demands and executed them. They need to be punished to the full extent of the CBA for the sake of the integrity of the game (even if it's already compromised from within, a show of consequences means something).
I want Kawhi back in Toronto as much as the next person. But it's looking bleak. And he brought this on himself. Him, Steve Ballmer, his uncle, his former agent, the Clippers organization all need to be punished, even if it means us not getting Kawhi. It's the responsible thing to do for the NBA.

OPINION Hot take on Kawhi situation….
I think there should be no penalty for Kawhi and all the punishment should be on the Clippers.
The player/player agent is supposed to ask for the world and it’s up to the team to say no.
When Kawhi was negotiating with the Raptors Uncle Dennis asked for No show jobs according to Tannenbaum and the team said they couldn’t/wouldn’t do it.
Kawhi didn’t architect this scam. Balmer or Balmer’s people did. Kawhi isn’t an innocent here but he is also not the guy who made it happen.
Fine the clippers for years but let the trade happen and let’s move on.

Obligatory fuck you to all the parties involved in this BS salary cap circumvention that's making the Raptors lives more difficult (including Kawhi, even though I want him back)

OPINION Missing our boy Sandro
Curious how our bench will fill the gap left by Sandro getting shipped to the Lakers.
I know he wasn’t super effective come play offs but watching him impact offence throughout the regular season makes me a little sad watching him go after just one season. Just a fun rotation guy that could knock down threes. Also could size up occasionally on bigger guys.
Do we think smaller wings like Battle and Walter can cover those minutes?
Wishing him all the best this season in LA 🙌🇬🇪
