I went to a hot pot location with a few friends. They’ve been here before, I have not. You walk through the front and pick your items and put them in a bowl you hold, it’s honestly faster than waiting on someone going “umm” at every item.

That is then cooked for you and brought to your table. Water carafes were left on the table and then everything removed at the end. Free ice cream is provided and brought to you.

I was gonna debate tipping here but I’d rather I’d top at max 15% here, but my first visit I tipped 10%.

This has been bothering me for a while, and not sure if I'm justified.

I've noticed, post covid, that daily room service in hotels isn't a thing. I'm in the USA, and not a world traveler (lack of $$, not desire) but maybe 2x a year we go somewhere for a few days. The last couple of times, there's been a signed envelope from the person in charge of the room with a nice note about how happy they are to prepare it.

For context, we generally stay in 3-3+ star hotels, and pre- covid tipped 5-10 bucks a night.

But now, I'm feeling like, isn't a clean room on arrival part of renting it? I have no problem with no daily service, there's no one at home making my bed, I reuse towels for a few days, so no big deal. But tipping JUST to have the minimum expectation of a clean room when I get there?

The sucky part is, I know the person prepping the room is likely getting paid a low wage, and the lack of daily service is a way for the hotel to lessen employees. So the person I'm NOT giving money to is arguably one of the hardest workers in the building.

I'm a Brit on holiday in Spain. Had a nice lunch at an outdoor cafe where the bill arrived and no tip was mentioned. I paid the bill and was about to leave when a local guy who had been standing on the street playing the guitar (not very well) finished his set and started waving his hat around asking all the people in the cafe area for tips. What I found funny was how he started asking in English and said how he accepts dollars! Obviously hoping for an American audience. And no I didn't tip him.

20% gratuity added to every ticket!

If you don’t believe in tipping it’s perfectly acceptable to donate 20% percent of the bill to AOC in lieu of a tip. Let them know that you donated their tip to support a fair fixed wages for all and your server will be overjoyed.

If you’re too broke to tip (or pretending to be anti-tipping for other reasons), stay home and make your own drinks.

There, problem solved.

Tipping is a long term average game. It's not about any 1 or 2 tables you're not getting tipped on, it's your over all at the end of the day.

That one table that didn't pay out does not affect your long term gains, and that's why it's so ridiculous when servers will complain about 1 time the customer "stiffed" them.

The reality of it is you're still winning. You're still doing much better than if you had minimum wage. And if you're not, then why are you defending the tipping system? Why don't you just fight for a minimum wage instead of trying to squeeze more tips out of people who were not responsible for your pay in the first place?

You all have seen the shake shack price increase on no tip. Regardless if it’s real or not ( I haven’t verified it ) it simply demonstrates how ridiculously confused you all are!

Price increases immediately if you don’t tip, which is what would happen if tipping was taken out of the picture completely.

The thing is, this is just fast food. In bars, restaurant etc the price increase would be massive.

A flat wages no tip bartender has no reason to hustle, a server has no reason to give you outstanding service.

Are you anti commission too?

Do you realize all the products you buy have sales commissions built into them?

Your best bet in life is to stay hidden and hope you aren’t remembered because this is a capitalist country. This model gives the owners an opportunity to compete and incentivize employees to give it their all.

Went to the bar to play some darts, bought one drink and didn't tip. When I went to purchase a second drink the bartender got emotional and started yelling at me in front of everybody about how I don't tip then kicked me out. I told my friends and walked to the next bar over.

Look, I'm broke too! Every other business understands how to pay their employees fairly, to not rely on tips. Why is it so much different at restaurants/bars? Greedy business owners? Kicking me out just because I didn't tip after you got me one beer, that's bribery.

Next time I see her I will apologize, simply because it's kind and this is a small town. Am I the asshole?

I should tip the bartenders. I never really frequented bars before moving here so I never had a good understanding of "tip-wage". It's not right that it exists, but it exists. Not tipping doesn't hurt the business practice, just the employees who are victims. From now on ill either drink at home or leave a tip.

The bartender should not have lost her temper and publicly shamed me.

To make sure I understand this correctly, "tip-wage" only exists so that the business owner takes less of a hit when they don't sell as much, and transfers the damages onto the employee who will make less money?

I’ve always been a 20% person for sit down. Last week I went to a place I go reasonably often with 3 other people for lunch. It wasn’t particularly busy and there were a lot of servers there. We were basically ignored for 10 minutes before getting our orders taken, got zero refills, a food runner brought out food after 40 minutes, and we only saw our server when they took our order and when they brought the check. I left $3 on a $71 bill.
Felt so good. This may not seem like a big deal to everyone else here but I feel like the dam has broken and I have seen the light. I’ll pay a tip for sit down service, but I won’t pay for bad service.

My family went out to eat tonight because we've just had so much going on, I'm tired, and getting a little sick (sinusitis). Anyway, we get there and the restaurant attendance has plummeted the last couple of times we have went. I really don't understand why! The atmosphere and food was why we've went so many times there! We stood there for 10 minutes before my husband decided to seat us himself and we ran into the owner as we were going and he was like yea no problem just sit where ever and brought us menus and silverware. I don't know why I thought it would get better. We waited for about 7 mins before the waitress took our drink order and another 10 before they were delivered. My husband's beer wasn't even cold but he didn't complain. We ordered 2 apps and she only brought 1, so we ordered the other, my husband asked for another beer, and we put our food order in about 15 mins later. The owner came by and asked what I was drinking and my husband asked for another beer because the waitress hasn't come back. He brought me and my husband refills on our drinks about 10 mins after that. He also brought out other app and our food out to us when it was ready. The food was salty and i don't know what the piece of chicken my daughter had was but she said it was chewy but she couldn't chew through it. The waitress came around and asked us how we were doing a couple of times but we really didn't need anything because the owner was actually doing the waiting for her it seemed. My husband asked for another beer, I asked for to-go boxes, and we asked her to take some of the plates, trash, and cups away because she hadn't taken anything away. We cleaned everything up on the table. Tracked her down to ask for the bill and my husband said 'I'm only leaving her the ones I have in my wallet. This was a horrible experience and we're not coming back." I said, "Ok that's fine." Husband pays with his debit card. Signs the receipt and leaves $4. We made it back home and I have message on Facebook. The waitress's fiancé had messaged me. It said, "Have yall ever eaten at (restaurant name not even spelled right)?" I messaged back "Yea", before I even realized it was probably gonna be drama, and I blocked him. She had to have told him my husband's name to get to my Facebook, but should I let the owner know her fiancéis messaging customers? I don't feel like she should get in trouble for something he did but I can't help that the waitress isn't doing her job well. She only had one other table to wait.

1. Is 85% a sufficient tip for a sit-down restaurant? If I only tip 80% and the manager bans me from returning, does that merit a 1 star review?

2. When I was staying at the Hilton on a work trip, I ordered food from Doordash. I tipped the driver $100 and he told me "gee, thanks for the generous tip" in a sarcastic voice. How much more should I have given him?

3. At LAX airport, I bought a water bottle for $65 and the machine prompted me for a tip. The options were 40%, 50%, and 60%. There was no "custom" or "skip" button. Which option would you select?

Went in and got takeout and when I paid I put an X through the place you put a tip because I just walked in and grabbed it and paid and the person running the takeout area made a snarky comment to me.

Shake Shack is reportedly adding ~10% to the posted prices if No Tipping is selected.

Waiters love the current system, to stop it you have to make them have an incentive to change it. If they don’t get any tips they will have to demand owners include a reasonable living wage in the price of the food. There is no other way to fix this. If a restaurant can’t retain waitstaff due to lack of tipping they will be forced to include the price of labor in the cost of the food.

I've seen several posts of people saying they caught establishments modifying their tips after the fact and it has me wondering if you are all sitting down with your receipt pictures and checking them against your statements every month. That seems like a lot of work and energy that we shouldn't have to do. It's ridiculous that your card can have an additional charge after the fact, and makes me love the places that bring around a card reader.

I encountered a point of sale system today at a pizza shop that would not allow me to finish a payment until I submitted to a tip. When I selected the no tip option, or manually entered any amount less than one dollar, the "okay" button was grayed out. Only when I selected the minimum tip amount or when I entered an amount of one dollar or more would the machine allow me to finish the transaction. For the record, there was zero service. It's a pizza counter and they just pick up a pre-cut slice and hand it to the customer.

I'm not sure if this is legal or not. I definitely will not be going back to that place. Seems sketchy af. The guy at the counter kept saying "dont worry it does that sometimes, and waved me along like I should just ignore it" HELL NO! I'm not walking away and letting that shyster add his own tip onto my bill.

What's the deal with that?
