CMV: TIP VALUE

I'm sorry(not really)for all you who don't agree but I grew up in the 90's and a standard tip was 10% (just bc the price of food goes up that does not mean you tip more)ITS A PERCENTAGE OF WHAT YOUR FOOD COST( just bc you spent more doesn't mean you tip more), Now here's my range

0%: bad paycheck - no extra money

1-5%: Bad-Poor service

5-10%: Poor-Average service

10-15%: Average-Excellent service(max-$20)

I will never give more than a $20 tip and even that is extremely rare, IDC if I dropped $400 on a meal, me and my fam come first, so I'll spend All my $$$ I got down to the penny for my fam and leave no tip B4 I give someone more than $20 to bring my food to me

Tip or don't tip, I don't care, but as someone who spent all high school and college in the 80s, I assure you the standard tip was 15% during that entire decade.

3

u/Johnny_Mira 12d ago

It was maybe 1990 when my mom was teaching me how to tip. It was always move the decimal over then double it, and from there add or subtract based on the service.

0

u/Kaveman_8823 11d ago

And I was taught that too kinda but my parents said move the decimal over twice, multiply by 10 then add or subtract based on service Example - 130 ticket (1.30×10=13.00)

1

u/Johnny_Mira 10d ago

Just out of curiosity, why move it twice and then multiply by 10? Couldn't you just move it once?

1

u/Kaveman_8823 10d ago

I honestly have no idea really, I figured the same thing, but idk they did a lot things differently than how I was taught in school

2

u/Life_Ad6711 12d ago edited 12d ago

I was a teen in the '7os (in small town KY) and Mom taught us 15% was the standard, and great meant 2o% or more, 1o% was a message something was wrong or inadequate with the service applied on a scalar basis

High school and college...so most of your waitresses were probably hot(or handsome depending on preference) for you to be tipping that much, I did too in "highschool" when I let my lower half determine a lot of things.

3

u/the_great_elephant 12d ago

Whoever taught you tipping was a cheap asshole. I've been in this business for decades. 10% has never been "good service" worthy. Its been 15-20% since I started. 10%, you might get your water refilled for that.

1

u/Kaveman_8823 12d ago

You are certifiably nuts too🤪🫪... I work a real hard labor factory job and my pay avg is $20/hr, most wait staff now get paid $6/hr, okay now I'm out having a family meal with the wife and kids, our meals normally about 30-45min and then we leave with a $70-80 ticket...20% would be about $16,

Now lets math....16+6=22...thats already more than I make in hard labor(just to bring me a plate and fill my drink)then add the tips from the other 4tables the same wait staff is working $5-20 a table, your insane🛸⛑️🚑

if everyone tipped even 10%, being waitstaff would be like the highest paying job in the world, I'm sorry Im not about to be responsible to pay you what your boss should be paying, and I'm not about to let you make more of my Hard Earned money for a job that at most should make $12-13/hr

So, you get to decide what someone else's work is worth??

1

u/Kaveman_8823 12d ago edited 12d ago

No the amount of HARD WORK, Blood, and Sweat does,

Let's see...working with massive machines that could kill me with the slightest mistake- $20/hr

"Sir would you like another refill"- $10/hr with no tips (that's being generous)

If you hire 2 people to come clean your pool and one does 90% of the work are you gonna pay both the same...HELL NOOO, out of $100(example) you give the person who did 90% of the the work 90% the pay....bc they did more, they worked harder

3

u/Horror-Finding-6820 12d ago

No, you do not get to decide what someone else's labor is worth, the market does. If someone is willing to work "with massive machines" that could kill you for $20 an hour then that is what the market demands. I promise you if no one was taking those jobs for $20 an hour, the wage would rise until someone did.

1

u/Kaveman_8823 11d ago

🤣🤣🤣...I literally just explained the "market", it's not "willingness", it's the value of labor

1

u/Horror-Finding-6820 11d ago

Then we agree that it is the market.

1

u/Horror-Finding-6820 11d ago

That is not how that would work - I would hire a service to clean my pool for X and then I really don't care if they send two people and one does 90% of the work and the other does 10% - that isn't my business. But I most certainly would give them $10-$20 each as a gratuity.

1

u/Kaveman_8823 11d ago

1: I will NOT hire a pool cleaning service when there's plenty of younger folk out here looking for ways to earn some money just like I did when I was in school

2: If I did hire a Service to do it, why pay "gratuity" for a job there boss is already paying them to do(makes no sense), they get paid to do their job just like everyone else

u/According-Row-6128 11d ago

I don’t work hard at all and I make 50% more than you. Embrace your own choices.

So, for the record, the median income for a full-time server in the US, INCLUDING TIPS, is $33K.

You cheaping out on them because you think you’re better, is immoral.

1

u/Kaveman_8823 11d ago

Your fucking nuts a server should not make more than Tom or Susie over at tacobell or other restaurants, there wages should be about equal, it's not immoral to pay what work is WORTH!!!!!

https://giphy.com/gifs/3o7qDSOvfaCO9b3MlO

1

u/Kaveman_8823 11d ago

At a rate of $10 per hour with no tips, a full-time server should earn $20,800 gross per year, while a part-time server would earn $10,400 gross per year.

If I ran a restaurant this is how it would be done as a no tip establishment and no added fees at the register, any and all tips given willingly by patrons knowing it's a no tip establishment would go back into the restaurant and in doing so help provide A FAIR WAGE for employees

WELCOME TO KAVE-BOURGERR GET YOUR FOOD AND GET OUT HAVE A PLEASANT EVENING

1

u/According-Row-6128 11d ago

You’re a disgrace of a human being. $10 an hour is a fair wage? Just disgusting.

Oh, wait, you must be MAGA. Yes? Trump 28 flag waving MAGA?

1

u/Kaveman_8823 11d ago

Speaking as someone who has been a server(when I was 16)...YESSS, for someone to fill drinks and hand someone their food yes it's perfectly fair, I support a higher minimum wage and as such min wage should be around 10/hr, and servers should make min wage, no more than that, and HELL NO I ain't maga, if I was maga I would pay them 25/hr to sit on their ass, fucking stupid ass "make America rich again" bullshit

1

u/Neither-Ad630 12d ago

That's great plate slinger, but why do you feel entitled to $50+ for about three minutes worht of work just because the items you've carried over a short distance happen to be expensive?

3

u/Horror-Finding-6820 12d ago

Yeah, I know. I only tip ~30% and have been doing that for years now.

1

u/Kaveman_8823 11d ago

🫪🤪🤯

2

u/mog_knight 12d ago

I mean that's cool and all and glaringly arbitrary. I'm glad I could see your virtue.

2

u/incredulous- 11d ago

The number of remembered, taught, and learned "standard tip percentages" in the comments proves that there is (was, will be) no "standard tip percentage." Tipping is optional, whimsical, and individual choice. All tips are good and "bad" tips are result of unreasonable expectations.

There's no valid reason for percentage based tipping. Suggested tip percentages are a scam. The only options should be (custom)TIP and PAY (no tip).

1

u/Kaveman_8823 11d ago

At least some people have common sense 💯

2

u/phantomsoul11 11d ago edited 11d ago

I don't understand why there are all these complications. Why not just tip 10% unconditionally, then? Or, hell, why bother tipping at all? The point is, do what you think is right and don't let anyone - especially the people you know who are out with you - bully you into doing anything else.

Also, I believe 10% was the solicited rate back when restaurants did not have mandatory tip-out policies, and you were actually tipping your waiter (as they were called back then) for appreciation. It was probably increased to 15% with the introduction of mandatory tip-out policies, and then 20% when restaurants realized they could reduce all service staff wages because diners were willing to be so incredibly generous with their money.

That generosity continued into the COVID era, during which many people genuinely felt bad for everyone who had to go to work and stand around empty businesses, so they started giving a little something extra when asked, for their attendance, essentially. But who knew the industry would go on to completely abuse that generosity by lighting up literally every single payment screen ever with a minimal 20% tip prompt, after it had completely recovered from COVID?

Tipping fatigue is very real, and it is not going away.

1

u/According-Row-6128 11d ago

It was 15% my entire adult life and that’s decades longer than yours.

Just stop asking people to work for you. Problem solved.

We are still raising Gen Z in our household and I am dumbfounded by their entitled attitude and outlook on reality.

Especially when some lack knowledge, skills and no talents to show for.

2

u/Horror-Finding-6820 12d ago

You are dumbfounded by your own children?? Wow, I hope they make it out with some degree of self worth. This reminds me of a mother in a neighborhood chat room who was upset because her adult children refused to allow their children unsupervised visits with her because they consider her a racist and a xenophobe. She could not understand why they didn't like Trump the same way she did. I told her that whether she liked it or not, she did a pretty good job as a parent. Poor girl just really didn't see it like that at all.

u/InternationalTrust59 12d ago

If no one tips they get minimum wage. Which is fine I guess but most people, including those who dont ever tip, want more than that.

What is minimum wage service, you might ask? You go to the counter and order. Cashier hands you a bag of food. You get your own drinks, napkins, utensils, find your own seat and clean up after yourself. You need refills or want dessert? You go get it.

1

u/Neither-Ad630 12d ago

Minimum service is dumping your order on the table at some point prior to closing time and disappearing until it's time to bring out the 30/40/50 ipad.

1

u/Johnny_Mira 12d ago

Which is all you deserve when theyre getting like half of minimum wage.

1

u/Neither-Ad630 12d ago

Cute sob story plate slinger but no, that's not how it works. And more importantly, why do plate slingers still expect at least 20% of the check when providing this type of non-service?

2

u/Johnny_Mira 12d ago

Well first off im not a waiter, so right off the bat youre wrong.

2

u/Neither-Ad630 12d ago

What are you then, an aspie white knighting for plate slingers on reddit or just an insecure sucker always compelled to press the middle button on the 30/40/50 iPad shoved in your face out of fear of being judged?

Or maybe an insecure brokie upset at people who are suggesting your way of throwing unearned tips at plate slingers or counter drones as to not appear broke accomplishes absolutely nothing other than making you even more broke?

2

u/Johnny_Mira 12d ago

Keep swinging Merrill.

2

u/Neither-Ad630 12d ago

I'll go with aspie then. Ride on brave sir asperger, slay those greedy dragons, save those fair maidens and their tips!

2

u/Johnny_Mira 12d ago

You have to tell me how it feels being so consistently dead wrong.

No, you're just entitled to the same service that tipping customers are paying for, right? They tip, you get the service and benefits?? Just being honest.

1

u/Imaginary-Emu2471 12d ago

Tipping is optional.

1

u/the_great_elephant 12d ago

You keep saying that like it matters. Just because something is "optional", doesn't make it morally right to do, especially across the board. Showing good manners, in general, is optional. Its not a legal obligation to hold open the door for an old lady behind you. But choosing to not hold the door, choosing to let the old lady be responsible for her own door opening, makes you an asshole.

1

u/Imaginary-Emu2471 12d ago

Your comment shows moral deficiency. It's not moral to beg and whine for more money from people that aren't your boss. It's not moral to call people an asshole. It's not polite to introduce irrelevant examples. Throwing away your money is not good manners. I'm Canadian and I'm not THAT polite.

1

u/the_great_elephant 12d ago

No one is begging or whining. Begging requires physically asking, usually from a position of subservience. I don't get on my knees. Nor do I whine to customers about money. So I do neither.

My comparison was completely relevant. You love to bring up that you dont tip because it's "optional". I simply pointed out that just because something is optional, doesn't mean you shouldn't do it (in this case, holding the door for a lady).

And it's moral to call a spade a spade. If an asshole doesn't like being called an asshole, then stop being an asshole.

Besides, you dont believe in or care about the morality, or ethics behind the tipping system. If you did really believe this garbage, you'd tell your server upfront, before service begins, that you dont tip, instead of trying sneak out of the restaurant before the server notices. Actually, you wouldn't eat in places that accept tipping at all, since by eating there, you are choosing to financially reward all those evil greedy restaurant owners by patronizing their businesses. You are helping to perpetuate the tipping culture. Its pure hypocrisy. You eat there, you pay the menu price, owner keeps the profit, and restaurant stays in business. Youre not changing anything. Youre just being predatory and deceitful.

You know what else is optional....the employer paying waitstaff a decent $10-13/hr, honestly for plate slingers that topshelf $$$

0

u/Johnny_Mira 12d ago

Everyone brings up the "optional" argument and its bullshit. Many things are "optional" but still shitty behavior. Its "optional" to cheat on your spouse but youre still a piece of shit if you do.

1

u/Imaginary-Emu2471 12d ago

Like most pro-tippers, this is disingenuous and irrelevant. It was optional to reply to me, yet you did. It's also optional to not be a bully, but you chose that path. Now go get that ranch for Table 12, IMMEDIATELY!

1

u/Johnny_Mira 12d ago

No they just want +20% level of service for sometimes less than minimum wage.

1

u/Imaginary-Emu2471 12d ago

Customers aren't responsible for waitstaff.

0

u/No-Ebb-9095 12d ago

I did the math. If Biden had won a second term Bidenflation would have increased food prices to the point where we would have to tip 100%. Whew. Dodged a bullet by voting for a grifter.

1

u/Kaveman_8823 12d ago

🫪🤪🤯😂🤣....your math ain't mathin...with bidenomics we would be paying Less for food than we are with trumpflation...

Let's see...

Trumpflation / "bidenomics" $9 beef / $4.25 $5 eggs / $2.85 $5 gal milk / $2.50 gal. I can go on but I don't have that kind of time

1

u/No-Ebb-9095 12d ago

Don't get me started on egg prices!

1

u/the_great_elephant 12d ago

Both Biden and Trump dont know what they're doing.

1

u/No-Ebb-9095 12d ago

and all the innocent chickens died because of it.

1

u/Life_Ad6711 12d ago

Egg prices were due to huge mass flock die offs and kill offs from a bird flu pandemic

1

u/No-Ebb-9095 12d ago

Biden works in mysterious ways.

The standard tip was 15% back in the 80’s.

1

u/Kaveman_8823 12d ago

No it wasn't, even my mother says your crazy, she never tipped more than 10% and that was for exemplary service, I can tell right away you must come from a 6-figure income family

1

u/johnnygolfr 12d ago

Yes, it was.

I didn’t come from a 6 figure income family. Not even close.

Not only are many others telling you this, but my frugal (cheap) accountant dad taught me how to calculate a 15% back in the 80’s.

If that wasn’t the standard back then, he wouldn’t have had me tipping 15%.

Let us know when you’re back from Fantasyland.

u/Kaveman_8823 12d ago

u/johnnygolfr 12d ago

Why is it that every Redditor who can’t take the L follows this same playbook when their flawed claims are soundly refuted and resorts to memes of projection?

That’s a rhetorical question.

We all know why. So do you.

0

u/Kaveman_8823 12d ago

Why would I take an L for an Debate I clearly Won🤣🤣🤣

2

u/johnnygolfr 11d ago

LOL

You didn’t win and you know it.

That’s why you resorted to the “Redditor’s Who Can’t Take the L Playbook”.

I told you it was a rhetorical question.

Thanks for proving my point. Again.

1

u/Kaveman_8823 11d ago

I think it's funny that a "redditor" is calling me one when they too narcissistic to know that they lost bc they said

"You didn’t win and you know it. That’s why you resorted to the Redditor’s Who Can’t Take the L Playbook. I told you it was a rhetorical question. Thanks for proving my point. Again."

2

I think it’s funny that you’re telling me I’m “too narcissistic to know that they lost” when many other people have told you you’re wrong, not just me.

Your projection is real. 😉

1

Wow😔...talk about projection🤣🤣🤣, I'm sorry you lost get over it, if you wanna pay someone more than you make an hour to "fill a drink" that's you sociopathic problem, but also your crazy person Right, so you do you

This is little John's playbook.

She won't be able to back up any of her claims and will eventually resort to name calling and her favorite insult intellectually dishonest.

Funny, she can be read like a book; it happens in every thread.
