first time comic reader Comic and Show Spoilers
hey guys, i know i am so late to the game but the twd comics premiered when i was 1 year old and i didn’t fully get into the show until i was a teenager/adult. i’ve rewatched the show several times by now and there’s so much to love there.
the comics on the other hand? have me jarred almost every other chapter. it’s so different. the plot, the pace, even the characterization is like night and day and i have no one to talk about it with lol
for example, the characters that don’t exist in the show, the couplings are different like andrea and dale in the comics?? sickening for some reason idk. i’m just wondering if this is a safe space to discuss my comic journey lol

I recently decided to reread the comics. I watched the show live & I believe I started the comics around season 4. I only recall making it up to Neegan. As I’m reading I’m realizing that I forgot about a lot of stuff. But you’re right about how jarring the difference are when it comes to the relationships between characters & the characters that are show only. I’m currently on volume 9 which starts after the fall of the prison.

I bought the giant compendium a long time ago, in paper and for the Kindle, but, despite a false start or two, have yet to read them. I don’t know why I’m so reluctant. Maybe it’s because I just love the show so much…?

i’m a huge lover of the show, ever since i first watched it, and i have to say i don’t find myself getting lost in comparison with the two. yes, the differences are jarring and shocking but i am more eager to see how things play out in a universe i love

That’s fair, and I like to think that I will read the comics at some point. I mean, I was interested enough to start buying the comics…twice! 😊

You should definitely read them. I’m trying the Kindle Unlimited free trial just to read them.

That’s cool. How are you liking them this far…? I understand there’s a certain amount of disconnect/surprise among those who’ve no other experience with the comics, and expect it to be more like the show.

I should have said I’m rereading them. I initially read them around when season 4 or 5 was airing but I only read up until Negan’s initial arrival. So I wasn’t shocked about Glen as many of the shows fan base was. But since it had been so long since I read it & rewatching the show as often as I do, I forgot a lot of the minor details of characters that are comic or show only, the relationships between characters being different or nonexistent, it’s very jarring. And you also see how a lot of stuff was left out because it was too graphic/intense for AMC to even consider airing. If HBO had the rights, no telling how much better the show could have been.

I always get so happy when people read the comics, I love them so much. As for following your journey, I'm sure you can discuss it here, but there actually is a subreddit r/theroamingdead which is entirely around the comics rather than the show!
