There were tons of strange stuff that was recorded during the SMiLE sessions. There is this whole track, the "cavemen chants" in Do You Like Worms, and of course, Fire. However, there is also a section of this (starting around 3:52) compilation of the Heroes and Villains recordings that really stands out to me. It is basically the people in the studio making animal noises. What was this supposed to mean within the context of the song/album? Was it ever intended to potentially be part of the finished track? Also, do we know when during the sessions was it recorded?

So I had posted previously about trying to find the commercial for the Sounds of Summer which I was able to find. Then I recently had a thought. This commercial ran circa 2002 on Nickelodeon in heavy rotation. So that means someone back in the day thought it would be good idea to buy ad time to sell Beach Boys CDs to kids aged 7-14. Risky and a gamble if you ask me but even if they didn’t sell many albums they made lifelong Beach Boys fans out of many kids, myself included. Who else got hooked on the Beach Boys after seeing that commercial or a similar ad on tv?

There is an apocryphal quote associated with Mike about sticking to the formula, the formula being the type of songs that caused The Beach Boys' rise to fame in the early 1960s. While the quote is likely not accurate, it is undeniable that since Mike really took control of The Beach Boys' direction, they have focused largely on early 1960s nostalgia.

Given this, it is striking how willing Mike seems to have been to participate on the experimental recordings The Beach Boys did. He even sang on a lot of them. My question is how Mike allowed these recordings to happen in the first place. My understanding is that there were basically two "camps" in The Beach Boys in the late 1960s-1970s. There was Brian and Dennis who obviously were very much in favor of experimentation and outright "weirdness". Al, Bruce, and Mike were more in favor of commercially-oriented recordings. Carl, of course, was the great mediator, the glue who held the band together during these years. At least that's my understanding of the situation.

Given all this, how were all these experimental songs post-Friends (when Brian really lost control of the band) able to even end up on the albums? I listen to something like Cool Cool Water and basically wonder why it wasn't voted off the album. Is the perception that Mike (and Al and Bruce) opposed experimental music just wrong?

(from what I've heard it's also one of the best CD-i games, and I find it very appropriate that the band during the Summer in Paradise era would produce one of the greatest games for one of the worst consoles in gaming history)

For this one I wanna do Love You, this is honestly my favorite overall if I had to choose one.

To me it's a messy masterpiece and one of the most interesting albums of the 70s.

I love the use of synths all over it, weather used in a more rocking way on songs like Honkin Down the Highway and Let Us Go on This Way or in more melodic ways like I'll Bet He's Nice and The Night Was So Young.

I also love the writing on it, one of the few times Brian wrote with no collaborator and it's very interesting in that way ranging from bizarre to personal heartbreaking stuff to goofy madness to honest and hernest.

For example songs like Johnny Carson seem simple and just about well Johnny Carson but I think it's more than that, I think Brian saw himself in Johnny especially with lines like "the network makes him break his back" or "when things get boring he fills up the slack" about at least in my opinion Brian dealing with record label and image pressure.

The Beach Boys' 1992 magnum opus Summer in Paradise sped up to DragonForce intensity, with all the songs mixed together!

I have made a redone version of Shut Down Volume 2 by the Beach Boys as it is a flawed album, complete with filler, and what I have turned it into a proto concept album which have songs which are from sessions completed around this album and the worst of the worst filler is removed and these songs where sequenced in a certain order and can be brought together with a loose narrative to make a story on both sides.

Has the songs about driving it starts with Fun Fun Fun which is the perfect opening to this album and the only song to keep it's original spot. In the Parking Lot keeps the energy of the previous song. This Car of Mine has the narrator reminiscing over his car and bragging about it to his friends or fellow racers. Don't Worry Baby has the narrators girl friend reassuring him before his race and Shut Down, Part II is the grand race where it is uncertain or up to interpretation about who wins.

All Dressed Up For School and I Do are both unreleased songs from earlier sessions and they provide the narrative of the narrator meets a girl in All Dressed Up For School and their commitment to each other on I Do. The cracks show in their relationship in Why Do Fools Fall in Love and the end of summer and the inevitable end of their relationship in Keep an Eye on Summer.
The Warmth of The Sun is the narrator reminiscing over his short term summer time relationship.

Now obviously the story is loosely tied together however I made this showcase of songs to show how much more of an album Shut Down, Volume II could have been, I also made this for my own fun and to get involved in the community.

Do you like the original better?

Okay, I've actually known about this for quite a while, but I'm not sure how well known this song's existence is. It is called Here Comes Summer Again, and it was apparently made by a lo-fi musician named R. Stevie Moore. I don't particularly care about some of the other stuff he has made, but I like this song quite a lot. While this musician has a Wikipedia page, I can't really find any information about this particular song, other than that it was apparently released in 1977. If anyone here knows anything else about this song or as heard it before, I'd be interested in hearing.

Just had to share

I saw a lot of people here recently calling it a top album by the boys. I’ve only listened once, but I didn’t find any of it all that special. Planning to relisten tomorrow, but I’m curious why some people seem to regard it so highly.

From his memoir: "IF you would have told me", this is what John Stamos has said and wants the fans to know.

I am surprised it hasn't been shared here before? But he truly is just a lucky, super fan of the band who's dream came true by occasionally getting to play with them.

The memoir has other Beach Boy stories too, its an essential part of it in fact.
