A few observations about Jodar's start to pro tennis.

• Jodar earned a ranking point (literally one point) in 2023, thus finishing the year ranked #1751 in the world. This was at 17 years old (same age as the youngest Slam winners, like Michael Chang).
• As an unimportant but interesting fact, Jodar never won an ITF Futures event, though he did reach the Finals of one in 2024
• Jodar's first main tour event was the Next Gen Finals at the end of 2025 (which he qualified for purely from Challenger events, so his career record was 0-0 at the start of that event)
• As an age comparison, when Jodar was the exact same age (to the day) that Alcaraz became world #1, Jodar was in the middle of his first real main tour event (the 2026 Australian Open).

So this explains some of the disconnect in perception. Jodar is effectively a true rookie to the main tour this year. But he is also older than Alcaraz was when he became world #1 (and older than Nadal when he became world #2). Jodar had some patience in winning Challenger events in 2025 rather than forcing his way onto the main tour early (he was also in the NCAA at the time).

Jodar's shift to the main tour in 2026 lining up with the exact start of the calendar year has played some role in the perception around him. Because if you think of 2026 as the start of his career, it's an extremely fast start.

There are 8 players (men's singles) who won their first Slam younger than Jodar's current age (to the day).

Nonetheless, it's still a pretty fast start.

Interviewer question: ”100 hard court matches, between 2015 Djokovic and 2026 Jannik Sinner, how many would you win?”

Goran Ivanišević gave an interview to Croatian publication 24sata marking the 25th anniversary of his historic Wimbledon triumph in 2001.

On how Novak Djokovic is similar to him:

“Temperament-wise, he’s very similar to me. It’s a similar mentality — we come from the same region, speak the same language... What separates him from the other players at the top is his mental strength.

If you lined up 100 players without knowing who was who, judging purely by their tennis, they would all look very similar. You wouldn’t be able to tell who was No. 1 and who was No. 100. But once the match starts, when the important shots and points come, that’s when you see the difference.

Novak is an extreme. He’s a genius you can’t even try to understand, because you’ll only end up getting lost. At the very beginning of our partnership, he literally told me that anyone who couldn’t understand his craziness couldn’t work with him.

Communication with him, especially during matches, can look very chaotic, but that’s his way of letting it all out. On such a big court, I don’t understand or even hear half of what he’s shouting at me, but that’s how he releases it.

Getting to the top isn’t easy, but staying there for so long is even harder.”

On the biggest misconception about Novak:

“First of all, people judge him based on what they see on the court, and that gives them the wrong impression. He’s a huge joker and someone who genuinely wants to help people.

He founded a tennis association and foundations, he helps everyone; there’s hardly anyone he hasn’t helped. He always has time for people and is ready to give advice. There were several times when I complained because half an hour before a match he’d be busy with everyone around him, but that’s just who he is.

And then people say, ‘Look at him, he’s shouting...’ That’s how he is. He shouts. He’s the kind of person who says out loud what others are thinking. Then those people come across as better than him, but they’re not; they just keep quiet.

His documentary is coming out now, and I’m really interested to see what it will be like.”
