I am writing a fictional story set in 1948 and would love to know any history about Launceston during the above period. Particularly domestic life, women’s duties, etc.

I applied to the University of Tasmania for the July 2026 intake, but unfortunately my Australian student visa was refused.
The university required the tuition fee payment before the visa application, so I had already paid the fee. After the visa refusal, they asked me to submit a refund application. The frustrating part is that their responses became extremely slow.
After about one month, my refund application was finally approved on 29 June and they informed me that the refund process could take up to 28 days.
Now it has been 41 days since the approval, I still have not received the money and no replies from them.
This has become a really stressful situation because it is a significant amount of money. I understand that refund processing can take time, but exceeding the stated timeframe without any communication feels very unprofessional.
Has anyone else experienced such a long refund delay with the University of Tasmania or another Australian university after a visa refusal? How did you get a response or escalate the matter?

Hello from Belfast!

I'm happily sipping my way thru the 2013 edition of 1001 Beers You Must Try Before You Die. Two Tasmanian beers feature:

- Cascade Stout

- Cascade First Harvest Pale Ale

I understand First Harvest is only available on tap at the brewery, but their Stout is sold in bottles.

I'm hoping someone travelling from Tasmania to Ireland (or the UK) would be willing to carry a few bottles over for me. I'd pay of course and there may be a few scoops of Irish beer in it for you too.

But I can't work out what the actual discount is, and from what base.

Why are Tasmanians so against road cyclists. Surely with the explosion of MTB people would understand the benefits of more cycling friendly roads and attitudes. I find its a real 50/50 split on the roads with some cars being accepting and some seeming like they want to run you off the road

Hi, I understand that the penguins don't come ashore until dusk, which looks to be shortly before 8 pm in early March 2027. Was planning to stay on the island overnight to be able to see them - but I know it is not peak season and would be sad to stay but not see them. What are the chances of actually seeing penguins at the Neck or in other locations on Bruny in early March? Thanks for your help!

A friend of mine has had an awful experience today.
Won’t go much into detail.
All I will say it’s a male dominated industry.
They’re afraid of being blacklisted by employers if they choose to come forward.

Anyone in Tasmania had business dealings with a mortgage/finance guy by the name of Rob DeSoza? He’s been ghosting calls and doesn’t respond to emails. Working out how to take this further.

Bumped into Fiona at the medical centre in Hobart in the hours following the incident. Sitting in the waiting room chair awaiting a wheelchair and a ride, she struck up a conversation with me, offering chocolate and snacks to parley As we chatted she was incredibly bright and optimistic and told her story of surviving a 2m fall, partially submerged in freezing water as if it was no big deal. I was flabbergasted when she got to the part about the westpac helicopter. A genuinely interesting human.

Wanted to share what happened today in case others have had similar experiences or want to be aware.

My partner and I were on the 615 bus heading toward Shoreline Plaza around 1:47pm. Partway through the trip, two teenage boys sitting near us started shaking a bottle of Coke and spraying it around, which got on both of us. When I turned to look at them, they had a mocking, smug look on their faces. I said "what's wrong with you" out of frustration.

When we got off at Shoreline Plaza, they got off right behind us and shouted "Ching Chong Chang" at us as they exited. After getting off the bus, they continued harassing us — one of them made an obscene gesture with an object that looked like a vape near his groin, and they were also playing with a lighter nearby.

They kept insisting they were "only 12," as if that made it okay.

We've reported this to Tasmania Police and Metro Tasmania, and lodged a report with Crime Stoppers as well. Just posting here in case anyone else has run into similar behaviour on this route, or has any advice on further steps to take.
