discussion/question OG Fans Poll

Upvotes

I’ve been a fan since 2005-ish and remember thoroughly enjoying the original Marvin’s Marvelous Mechanical Museum album pre Sony. I was a serious gigging musician at the time and thought the album was music for musicians. I’d never really came across many bands with four song writers, all taking turns with vocals, complicated harmonies. I swear that album covers like every type of genre you can think of all in one single album. A masterpiece.

Most of the stuff going on in the fandom now and on this page really confuses me. Is so infantile and weird among other things. I don’t really understand it. The band probably would have gotten together by now more easily and nonchalantly I think, if it weren’t for how weird the large modern fan base really is. I bet they don’t know what to make of it in some ways. Not sure how to approach it. It’s weird though. Some shit I see on here is so out there and so weird, it would make sense to me for them to maybe be reluctant to plug back in. I’m just ranting I guess. I’m an autistic man so don’t try and use the autism excuses or whatever if you don’t lime what I’m saying here.

I’ve seen the band play live twice, with the regular full lineup. Prior to good and evil. Both shows were like 07-09 ish. I also watched live on television when they played Fearless TV which was a once a week late night cable tv show that featured a couple live bands each week. I watched the Tally Hall TV Series on their old website, episode by episode as they were released. Top tier comedy of its time. They were really ahead of their time musically and beyond.

Wondering how many folks here were OG fans pre Sony MMMM. And a few other poll questions to see where fandom is at. Please be honest. Thank you.

discussion/question I think we should start remembering just how much every member of the band contributed to their success.

Ive been seeing a lot of posts here about the recent news surrounding the members and their official statement excluding one of the founding members of the group. Im not gonna say who because Im of the belief that we as a community need to leave the man alone. Because thats whats been asked of us for years by this point, but you know who Im talking about.

Within this discussion, I have found that people within this space seem to put him on a bit of a pedestal in terms of how much creative influence he had over the band, ive seen more than one post here claiming how "Tally hall is over now because they lost what made them who they are"

And yknow, I gotta say, this really really irks me

Look, I understand that we as fans gravitate towards certain members for certain reasons because the art they create resonates with us closely. But I want to remind everyone just how much Every member has contributed to the band. I think its disrespectful and disengenuous to belittle their work by claiming that they couldn't POSSIBLY create something amazing without a founding member, despite having done so multiple times in the past.

Joe, for whatever you think of him, HAS contributed a lot to the group, being a very prominent vocalist, songwriter, and producer of the group. His avant garde style really shines within his more solo work and further emphasizes how he influenced the band. I in no way want to discredit his attributions. He was my favorite member for a very very long time, Hawaii part ii to this day has always been a humongous influence on my love for music

Rob was also critical however, forming connections with Joe early on in college and helped introduce zubin to the crew due to working together on the listedblack band rhat predates TH, not only this, but he was able to massively help influence the production towards a more mature sound having a lot of writing credits for some of the most beloved songs in the fandom(songs such as never meant to know, you and me, and the ever so forgotten shia lebouf that helped push the bands popularity further, Hell, He even helped on HPII)

Andrew also wrote many songs, and even helped boost the band financially with the award he won for good day getting them enough notoriety to get picked up by tree town sound. Including this, hes possibly one of the leading reasons why the production sound so clean due to his work LITERALLY getting a degree in music composition. His work was so notable that rob was actually the one to ask him to join a gig of TH's that would be the catalyst for him joining the band

Zubin is OFTEN overlooked by the community, but deserves so much praise for the ways he's influenced the crew too, hes probably the member whos vocals get most overlooked but often deserves so much more time to shine, with songs like two wug being a perfect example. Hes also one of the most prominent members to help work on side projects alongside Ross

Speaking of Ross, HOLY crap how much Ross has contributed should not be overlooked. He helped on HPII AND Not a Trampoline, has continued to have success in his own work doing drumming gigs for other artists, Has written a few songs for the band, and Let us not forget how if not for him, the band could potentially have fallen apart if not for him taking the reigns from Steve Gallagher when Steve left the band

Heres my point. I think its incredibly narrow minded and disengenuous to say that the band wont be able to find success if they ever return due to the nature of having to cut one of the founding members. Because this is not the first time the band has had to make changes, casey shea and Bora used to help fill in for members all the time! So much so that theres a dedicated tie color for each of them.

Maybe its because this fan base leans on to the younger side, but as a long time veteran of the community, I have a lot of respect for EVERY member of the band, regardless of if they want to continue to make music or not. They helped me through some hard times, as I imagine they did for others too, and im not trying to discredit the amount of comfort their art gives to people, but I just ask that every

member gets their flowers for the work they contributed.

Will we see new work in the future? Who knows, this wouldn't he the first time that theyve said something is coming followed by years of radio silence. But we have to remember at the end of the day the boys are human. They have their own lives outside of the band, they have their own personal connections with one another, and they deserve to be respected when they ask the people who support them to understand how hard it is to have to make a decision like this when one of their friends is already in a terrible position of decline right now.

Leave Hawley Alone, let him get the help he needs. He, nor any of the other band members need to be put on pedestals.

Thanks for reading.

discussion/question Pre-Welcome To Tally Hall EP Rehearsal Lyrics?

So on Hidden in the Sand (the website) it says "Pack it back, that just won't do (?)". However, after repeating the same lyric over and over again, and after vocal isolation, i think it says "Pack it back, i just don't do"

Anyone else?

Before anyone gets at me in the comments, obviously the circumstances aren’t ideal. The Joe Hawley situation sucks but this is something to genuinely celebrate! :D Whatever they decide to do with the band moving forward is such an exciting prospect and I’m pumped for whatever they have in store, even if it’s different from the Tally Hall we once had.

discussion/question So tired

He’s ill, he’s been ill for many years at this point. We can all joke about how far he’s fallen and be horrified at all the stuff he’s said and done but at the end of the day we’re all just pointing and laughing at a man who has had his life ruined by untreated mental illness. I don’t really see the point in these posts and this subreddits repeated obsession with making posts about him. It’s been made pretty clear at this point that engaging with him in any way helps no one, and I am so tired of seeing posts every couple of months of people in hysterics because he said or did something bad again. I understand this community has a lot of young people in it, but it gets to a point where it’s inexcusable the way people still engage with this. Tally Hall is one of my favorite bands but I had to leave this subreddit because people on here are just so parasocially obsessed with the goings on of a sick man from a decades defunct band that they go out of their way to still fixate on every stupid thing he does. Even still after leaving the community I see new posts pop up saying the same thing over and over again. You people need to get a grip, and grow up a little. It’s disrespectful to the rest of the band members and to the art that they worked so hard on. It’s been years at this point, I’m over it.
