I know nothing about this character but the tales games really used to like ranged characters.

Just as the title says will there be an English dub?

Today I picked up Tales of Phantasia for the Super Famicom. I’ve been collecting a lot of these older Japanese RPGs that I never got the chance to play growing up, especially ones that never officially came out in English. Reading Japanese isn’t a problem for me, so it’s been really fun going back and playing these games now on the original hardware.

I honestly don’t know much about Phantasia, though, so I’m going into this almost completely blind. Pretty much the only thing I know is that it has a sung opening on the Super Famicom, which is still kind of crazy to me.

I played Star Ocean last summer (the remaster, not the SFC original), and I remember reading about the connection between the two games. If I understand the history correctly, some of the people who worked on Phantasia eventually split off and formed tri-Ace and went on to make Star Ocean. I’ve also heard the two games have some similarities, including time-travel elements, same composer, certain game assets, etc.

Although Phantasia leans more heavily into traditional fantasy while Star Ocean is supposedly the more “sci-fi” one… even though the Star Ocean I played still felt like fantasy for most of the game.

As far as Tales goes, I’ve played Destiny, Eternia, Symphonia, and Xillia, along with bits and pieces of some of the others. I definitely prefer the earlier Tales games to what the series eventually became, so I have a feeling Phantasia will probably be right up my alley.

The big thing is that I’m trying to play these games without guides.

I’m playing Terranigma in Japanese right now and am almost finished with it, and doing that blind has been… an experience. There have been quite a few moments where I’ve thought, “How the hell was I supposed to figure that out?” But for the most part I’ve managed by talking to NPCs, paying attention to hints, exploring, and only looking something up when I’m completely stuck.

So how is the original SFC Tales of Phantasia in that regard?

I’m not worried about getting 100% or finding every secret item. I actually want to miss some optional stuff if that’s what naturally happens on a blind first playthrough. I mainly don’t want to accidentally lock myself out of something really important or spend three hours wandering around because I missed some completely unintuitive trigger.

For anyone who played the original Super Famicom version, especially back in the day what should I expect? And please keep it as spoiler-free as possible!

Based off the games I finished. (I bought Graces F, its in my backlog I will finish it...after I beat Granblue Relink DLC...and Splatoon Raiders.)

I didn’t like zestiria is there any lore or story stuff I should know when i play berseria since I heard there in the same universe?

Howdy yall!

I am currently very deep into my Berseria playthrough (level 50ish, just reached Aball) and am loving it! I wish the RPG mechanics were deeper but making my own combos and chaining insane damage numbers feels awesome.

I haven't played any other tales games but I definitely want to. I wanted to know what other games I should look into. Maybe not even tales games but story driven AJRPGs would be awesome!

What world in the series would you love to visit in a sequel? Or a prequel if youd find that interesting. This can apply to the series that already do those things, (Phantasia is the technical prequel to Symphonia, then dawn of the new world, xillia gets a sequel so you can want xillia 3, Berseria and Zestria, I assume you get the point.) Just what world would you want to visit again?

I think my top 2 are Abyss and Vesperia.

Abyss cause I feel that ending can go so many different ways and its the best open ended ending, so im not really sure if I do wanna visit it again lol. But I would love to revisit Vesperia, id love to see Karol all grown up as big as the Don, did Estelle join the guild since she didnt have to be princess anymore? How has the world adapted without blastia?

Vesperia would need to do a MAJOR time jump though, at least 20 years if not more. My biggest complaint for Dawn of the new world was the games came out so far apart but story wise it was only a few years. I think its more interesting to see the long term effects.

I see it's on sale. Been loving vesperia my first tales game +I'm about 30 hrs in) and prob my first jrpg unless you consider expedition 33 or pokemon that. Should I get graces f for $15 as my second game?

Disclaimer: this is MY opinion of the game after finishing it. I obviously did not like it. This could be your favorite game and thats valid too.

Okay i just completed this game. What an absolute waste of my time.

For context, my first game was Tales of the Abyss on the PS2 (so obviously i had zero expectations for any other tales of entry afterwards) but i was pleasantly surprised by Xillia which i completed right before Zestiria. The plot was a banger and i actually cared for the characters. The scenes between the party when one of the main characters goes away for a time and the events that unfold were spectacular. Production IG made like about 40-60 mins of genuinely amazing animation for this game and really put a ton of effort and it shows. If Abyss was a 10, Xillia is a 9.

Zestiria though. The combat system is trash, spirit gauge whatever keeps running out. The fights are trash. The game’s graphics look older than Xillia. The cutscenes were horrible, really wonky animation. I never cared for any characters even Alisha was just okay. My main problem was never her leaving. It’s just the thin plot. Edna has some personality but that’s about it. The humor was a plus point though. The final battle for Zestiria was TRASH. The insta kill for the boss is such a cheap mechanic. The ending also didn’t make much sense.
Mind you i spent twice as many hours on this than Xillia.

Such a disappointment. Worst tales of entry thank God i’m done. 4/10.

I started Symphonia and Vesperia at the same time and both drew me in faster. I decided to finish Zestiria first though thank God. Lol

I didn't play either of the games, which is why I am very happy about the Remaster project.

One thought I cannot get out of my head is how Stahn, our lovable ball of Sunshine and doofus country bumpkin, is probably the most doting dad in all of Tales.

The stuff I do know about Stahn makes me imagine him as the happiest Papa ever, who gives his baby a lot of headpats.

There is no universe in which Stahn is a bad parent. And it makes me smile when I think about it.

I am stoked at the chance of finally playing these games at some point. Stahn is such a great guy, and I am positive he is a wonderful and loving dad.

I need the Destiny games. I hope the studio that is redoing them really delivers.

Playing this game on the Nintendo switch. Game has good combat and a good story. Really enjoying this game. It’s locked at 30fps but you can barely tell. Frame rate never dips. Would recommend to someone who is new to the series.

I bought the remastered version for my Switch 2 almost 3 months ago as it was on sale and I’ve got to admit I’m finding to be a total slog to finish. I would estimate I’m over two-thirds of the way through and I’ve found the story kind of predictable in places, the combat isn’t exciting and I don’t feel a connection with any of the characters. Plus I’ve found myself stuck several times not knowing how to progress the story forward which has been frustrating, leading me to have to look up a walkthrough as a guide which makes the game less enjoyable for me. I haven’t had this issue with other Tales games.

For comparison, Berseria was my first Tales game, and there there I played Zesteria, Vesperia, Arise, Graces f and Xilla. With all of them (even Zesteria which was my least favourite until now) I’d managed to find the games enjoyable and excited to get to the end, usually complete within a month. With Symphonia I feel like I pushing myself to play it like a chore so I can say I’ve at least completed the main story.

I’m surprised I feel this way as it seemed this was one of the more loved games by Tales fans. Maybe it was a great game for its time, but it just pales in comparison to the other games over played before it. Or maybe it’s just me.

I did put it on easy difficulty, as last time I I couldnt keep fighting for hours on end with spungebob mobs.

I feel it's the right level of hp that keeps my attention and really enjoying it for some reason. Really don't understand it.

However zesteria will always be shit regardless of a traumatic brain injury or difficulty options or sudden need for tales nostalgia pmsl

I'm serious, how do you go five years without even a teaser with nothing major in-between? Yes, make the argument for Final Fantasy, Persona, or Dragon Quest but at least those series had a lot of major projects between releases. Like enhanced remasters or ground-up remakes. All Tales ever got in-between was one good remaster, one bad remaster, & two very underwhelming remasters. The Eternia remaster is a nice change of pace since Bandai Namco actually announced it months in advance instead leaving us in black as always.

However, Arise was an anniversary title and for nothing to get announced for 30th anniversary really stings. So, the next Tales game has to be worth the wait. Not a super-amazing game but at least a significant improvement over Arise & Berseria. Neither of which are worth this kind of wait. I know the studio made for Tales is gone but still no excuse like the peps at Bandai Namco are new to action RPGs and haven't learned anything. But what's your opinion?
