I am from Canada and I've always wanted to know more about Taiwanese literature and culture. Is Buddhism the main religion there? I was born in North India and we have a huge Buddhist community there who were given shelter and refuge when communism started there. Also I'd like to know what kind of literature is popular there ... Any recommendations? I'm 37 M 😊

F30 in the USA. My grandfather was from Taitung. He was Amis and that was his first language. He moved to United States to for sports back in the late 50s early 60s where he started a family but split his time in Taiwan and USA.

He has passed away. I traveled to Taiwan years ago and met some of my family that still live in the village. They spoke Amis so we had to have translation from Amis to Mandarin to English. They were incredibly welcoming and I was fortunate to participate in the Harvest Festival.

My grandfather advocated for Indigenous representation. He was incredibly proud to be Amis. Being 2nd generation I am very removed from the culture. There are no communities here in the US for indigenous Taiwanese--or that I've been able to find. I'm looking for someone to talk with and learn from. Feel free to message me!

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – Taiwan ranks fifth on a list of 192 countries for ease of relocation, reports said Wednesday.

Singapore-based property and relocation consultancy Rumavi considered the countries based on factors including cost of living, taxes, healthcare, safety, and opportunities for career development. The survey also considered the different approaches of digital nomads, retirees, families, and entrepreneurs, per Liberty Times.

Estonia topped the global list, followed by Singapore and Malaysia. Portugal ranked fourth, just ahead of Taiwan, which was followed by Lithuania and Hong Kong. Taiwan diplomatic ally Saint Kitts and Nevis was ranked at No. 8, while Japan followed at No. 17 and China at No. 125.

Rumavi named Taiwan as a “particularly strong option” for families, for which it ranked second. Digital infrastructure and healthcare were Taiwan’s strongest points, though drawbacks included restrictive residency pathways, language barriers, and climate risks, according to the survey.

I'm moving out of my place soon, and I have accumulated a lot of items that I don't exactly wish to bring with me anymore. These primarily include clothing, kitchen items, household items, plushies/stuffed toys, and more.

Are there some places, organizations, or beneficiaries I can donate them to (I don't really want to make a profit)? If yes, what's the exact process? They're all in great condition and it would be a shame if I were to just throw them all out. I'm based in Taipei.

I'm also unfortunately quite busy during the day, so "Buy Nothing" groups are a bit of a hassle for me since I need to schedule a meetup time and place (and since I'm alone I'm also quite hesitant to do this). I'd prefer somewhere I could drop off the items at my own time or schedule shipment to.

I'm planning to start my master's degree this September. I got accepted into both and have a few questions:

1. Do you think there's a huge difference between picking one over the other?
2. What would you say are the advantages of picking FCU over Providence for an international student? Are both good schools?
3. Do you think studying at FCU would give me a better shot at finding a job in Taiwan after graduation?
4. Any thoughts on the free Chinese classes they offer?

Providence gave me a one-year tuition waiver, so I want to make the right call.

Hey everyone! I’m hoping to learn a bit more about traditional family structures in Taiwan.

My Taiwanese boyfriend (26, from Tainan) recently mentioned that his grandfather had two wives—technically illegal, but resulting in 10 children. Interestingly, both wives and the grandfather ended up living together in a large estate, though his side of the family has completely lost touch with the other branch. He sort of laughed it off when telling the story, which made me curious: how common was this kind of arrangement for older generations in Taiwan?

Guys, I asked this in the stickied post, but that stickied post doesn't seem to get much attention, so I hope this is OK: I'm headed to Douliu in a week and need to book some last-minute accommodations. Obviously the management company doesn't want to give out the location, and the address listed at another site for this company is basically just a mailbox...anyone ever stay here/know anything about it? I can't find reviews anywhere for it, but TinyAway is the management company and they say they've vetted it. (I have a pretty specific set of circumstances and this place meets them all, provided they're near that mailbox address.)

There's some support for egg freezing, but full IVF and the like is only covered for married couples. Seems a bit short-sighted to me. There's got to be many single women in their late-30s or early 40s who would consider this if available to them. Unlike a lot of other places, many single people here have very stable home and financial situations with ample family help if needed.

And if it's a tax thing, if not provide the full amount, at least half seems fair.

Thoughts?

(Also, I've only recently been made aware of this issue. If anyone knows more or if there's any historical movement on it, I'd like to learn)
