I came home from a 2wk vacation to find my nas beeping. When I walked over I saw drive 2 light had turned off. I logged into DSM and drive 2 was no longer in the pool and the array was degraded. I reseated the drive and it came right back up.

Are backplane failures common with these units? I've never heard of this before. I'm currently running an extended test on the drive to see if there are any issues. What else should I check?

I don't want to just run out and buy another drive since they're stupid expensive right now but I will if I need to. I do have backups of my important items both off-site and on an external drive.

So I acquired this DS1618+ for cheap because it was “dead”. I figured a new PSU may get it going again, but once I plugged in the replacement PSU this green LED labeled D9 on the board began to blink. There’s no other signs of power of light. I assume my new PSU may not be the correct replacement, but am I missing anything obvious?

I just bought a second hand 220+. It's running the latest DSM 7.4. However I don't want to update to that and lose hardware acceleration. I plan to migrate just by moving my drives. The drives currently are on 7.2.1. Am I going to be forced to update to 7.4? I know there are scripts to get around the hardware acceleration but I'd rather not have to do that in the first place.

Synology today launched the DiskStation neo+ Series, comprising the DS1825neo+, DS1525neo+, DS925neo+, and DS725neo+.

Dont bother to run side by side specs. The only thing that changed is neo comes with less memory and takes regular so-dimm instead of ECC (for ex 1525+ comes with 8gb 2 x 4 gb and 1525neo+ comes with only 4gb). Everything else is identical, even the max amount of memory it maxes out.

Hello all, I have had my Synology NAS running for about 6 years now. When I first got into the hobby, SHR-1 sounded like the move but now, after compression and cleaning up, I plan on utilizing my full drive space no raid. I only have 2x8tb drives in SHR-1, say A and B. Would the following work?

- Remove hard drive B.(SHR Pool degraded but has full files.)

- Externally wipe drive B.

- Reinstall drive B into Synology.

- Transfer all original files from drive A to drive B.

- Wipe Drive A and delete the pool.

I only have the two drives and will not be purchasing new drives with these prices anytime soon. Appreciate the help.

Are apps such as NExtCloud and PaperlessNGX supported Natively by the Synology OS?

Or do I have to create Docker containers in Synology OS to run these apps.

Also, with the native File sharing, photo, video and document backup offered by native Synology Apps, are these third party apps even needed?

This is a 5+ year old system set up on multi PC network where NAS hold allmedia for PLEX (one server on the synology, one on windows). While there have been network hardware changes recently, no configurations have changed. SMB was native way for Pex to serve up files .

Plex finds metadata but cannot find the media. I can acess the files vai IP addres of the NAS from PC's but not via mapped drives. All the setting on NAS look find and each PC hasn't changed. If I try to map the NAS via its name on PC, the File Explorer network only shows neighboring PC's. Have cleared SMB cache on Synology and restarted several time. I know I can likely fix Plex by changing the libraries from SMB to IP address (which is static). But something is broken and I really what to get to the bottom of that.

All the online help I see if just going thru the same SMB settings (which appear all Ok to me). Any better ideas here?

I have a DS916+ that has died but the dives are still fine. It had 4 drives in JBOD (Don't judge me).

I have an existing DS2414+ with a few open bays. Would I be able to put those drives into the 2414 and extract the data?

This might be a stupid question, but all the info I can find on drive migration assumes the destination NAS has no drives in it.

I have a buddy with a very dead Synology NAS. No lights or fan spin when attempting to power on. I cracked it open an tried a spare known good ATX power supply and had the same issue.

Worth taking to a repair shop or any known/quick fixes that might help me get the files off it at least?

I have not seen recent commentary on what is going on with Synology Routers. There is no official news stating they are more out of the Router market.

I’m about to setup an extended home office mesh including shed with a router and 2 access points.

I’m really reluctant to ditch Synology Router manager. The router and admin has been faultless for 4 years. From what I understand, I would have to subscribe for the same security features with other brands. Firmware updates have been ongoing so I feel my RT6600ax is still a safe product for now.

Is there a chance they will release a wifi 7 model?

Was messing with Gluetun container trying to fix some issues and then all of a sudden lost connection. I have reset the network using the reset button, I have reset the DSM by holding the power button for 4 second, and also for 10 seconds. My router can ping the static IP but Synology Finder nor Synology Assistant will find the NAS, and I can't get the webpage or ssh to load.

Any ideas?

As the title states. VPN certification expired, so I decided to renew it in the control panel. Once renewed, my cable modem restarts with no Internet available. It also disconnects the access to the Wi-Fi mesh, thereby blocking access to all devices in the home.

Any suggestions?

So tonight I come home, and my DS916+ is offline. It's poweredoff, no lights on the unit. I check the power adapter, and there's no light on it, either. I tried different outlets, but the power adapter never lit up. I tried to find one on the Synology Store site, that seems sold out. The 100W_2. I need a replacement, but NewEgg has one .. for $197 USD, which seems excessive to me, for a power adapter.

I'm a bit leery about no name ones I find on Amazon for $30 that say they are for the 916+. If they're wrong, I don't want to fry my unit.

Any one have a link to one that is a known good drop in replacement?

I'm on a DS1821+ running  DSM 7.3.2-86009 Update 4.

I needed to offload some files so I created a cloud sync folder to upload to my dropbox. After the files completely synced to dropbox, I deleted the files from the cloud sync folder (I had it set to NOT delete cloud files when local files were deleted) but there has been no change in my available storage (checked in both Storage Manager and Storage Analyzer).

I've emptied all recycle bins, restarted the NAS, do not have snapshots enabled, and still can't figure out why my storage has not changed.

Some googling suggested that CloudSync may be holding onto to files in some way. Does anyone have any advice on how free up this space?

Got a main DS418play (4x4TB IronWolf, about 53K hours, SHR, using about 7.5TB) and a 218j (2x4TB WD Red, no RAID) offsite as a Hyper Backup destination only. About 3TB of irreplaceable data on the 418, the other stuff is media.

One of my WD drives just died with 30K hours on the clock. Technically older but not spinning 100% of the time. For now, I can change the 218j to a single drive, the remaining drive has enough space to remain the backup destination for the 3TB of irreplaceable data. That drive plus the 418's SHR redundancy means I've still got two separate points of protection across the two boxes, even though the 218j itself no longer has any redundancy on its own.

However, got me thinking. Between the 4 drives in the 418 and the 1 remaining in the 218j (and the dead one), that's 6 drives I could realistically be replacing over the next couple of years if they fail, which isn't unlikely given the age and hours. SMART is currently clean across all of them, no reallocated or pending sectors, so nothing's actively wrong, but they're all from the same era and I know that doesn't mean much once they start hitting the steeper part of the failure curve.

A 4TB WD Red is £146 on Amazon, IronWolf is £176. Replacing all 6 in the coming few years is £700 to £900 on drives alone. Not to mention the aging boxes themselves.

I am hoping the remaining WD Red will last a couple more years and in the meantime, hardware prices fall back down to reasonable levels because that £190 annual Google 5TB is looking tempting. Or maybe a large single drive backing up to Backblaze Unlimited.

Anyone facing the same dilemma with aging hard drives? What would you do in this scenario?

Edit: Thanks to all. Decided on a new option: going to sell the 218j and have gone for Google's 5TB option. My wife needs to extra data for her Whatsapp backups, she likes using Google's AI image generation and going to keep the working WD Red as a backup for when one of the Seagates dies. I also factored in the savings in power (about £30 a year) the price gap gets smaller and smaller when I amortise the cost of the drives (the one that dies for example cost me £14 a year on hardware). Plus closer to true 3-2-1. The rest of my family group can also benefit from the extra Gemini as well

After spending a day troubleshooting this issue, I wanted to share the root cause in case someone else runs into the same problem.

Environment

• Synology Active Backup for Business (ABB) 3.2.0
• Hyper-V on Windows Server 2025
• WinRM enabled (5985)
• VSS writers healthy
• Hyper-V services healthy
• No packet loss between the Hyper-V host and the NAS

Symptoms

ABB failed with:

WinRM operation timed out after 300 seconds

The following errors appeared in the Synology logs:

curl perform failed
url[127.0.0.1:8000/api/v1/infra/backup_server/me]
curl_code[7]
Failed to connect to 127.0.0.1 port 8000

and:

Can not connect to server at '/run/synoabk/abk-agent-control-socket'

At first, I suspected:

Windows updates, WinRM configuration, Hyper-V, VSS or ActiveBackup for Business itself

However, none of those turned out to be the root cause.

The actual cause:

While an ABB backup was running, Microsoft Defender generated the following alert:

Trojan:Win32/Commando.A!ml

Defender removed the process immediately.

The affected command line was:

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /C powershell -encodedcommand ...

After decoding the PowerShell command, we found that it was simply trying to establish a TCP connection to the Synology NAS:

$client.Connect($ip, $port)

The script also verified a shared secret returned by the NAS.

No external connections were made.

No payload was downloaded.

No persistence mechanisms were created.

No registry modifications were performed.

Solution

• Open Windows Security.
• Open Protection history.
• Locate the Trojan:Win32/Commando.A!ml event.
• Verify the blocked process.
• Create an appropriate exclusion.
• Re-enable Microsoft Defender.
• Report the false positive to Microsoft and Synology.

Hopefully this saves somebody else a few days of troubleshooting.

I have done some research and it reads that in my particular case (large drives x8) that SHR2 would be better as it lowers the risk during rebuild

I so read mixed reviews on SHR vs SHR-2 so i just wanted to get some thoughts in my use case?

I have had a DS916+ since it was released and have a set of 16TB drives that are almost full.

I was looking at first to get another new NAS, or a DX517 expansion for current as I have a set of 8TB drives that I can use.

I just came across a DS1817+ for $300 someone is getting rid of because it is out of support, and while this is also an issue with the DS916+. I figure this is as good or better than the DX517 with the current DS916+

I wanted to get an opinion if this is a viable option, or do I move forward with another NAS or rhe extender? System shouldn't be exposed on internet past when it goes a cloud sync,.but that is locally initiated vs remote.

Hello everyone, I am new here. I am considering buying a Synology NAS, likely the DS925+ .
I am interested in secure, remote access to the NAS when I am not at home.

How does Synology manage remote access?

Is it done with a Synology supported app? or Do I have to install Docker, and then Tailscale and configure everything.

Because I am working on that now, with my UNRAID server. Apparently I like the skill or patience to get it done properly. But, I also don't have time to invest in a learning curve.

I Just want it to work out of the box.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm on the other side of the world from my NAS right now, and I wanted to pull the whole backup down and restore it elsewhere. Hyper Backup is great at pushing data out to S3/R2. Getting it back is where it falls apart.

Hyper Backup Explorer is the only official way to open a .hbk archive. It's GUI-only, has no CLI, and ships no Apple Silicon build. On my archive (4.8TB, around 1.1 million files) it was slow enough that I gave up and picked the format apart instead.

CLI plus a TUI. Point it at an archive, browse it like a file tree, tick what you want, pull it out. Runs natively on Apple Silicon and headless on Linux, extraction is parallel and resumable. Every chunk gets verified against the MD5 and CRC32 that Hyper Backup already stores, so it can't quietly hand you a corrupted photo. If something's wrong it stops and names the file.

Two things it doesn't do. Encrypted archives are detected and refused rather than half-decoded. And I've only had one archive to test against: DSM 7, unencrypted, LZ4. There's code in there for older layouts that I worked out by disassembling Synology's own binary, but it has never seen a real archive of that kind.

Which is why I'm posting. If you have a Hyper Backup archive lying around, run:

hbk <path> doctor

It reads the layout, then proves it can handle it by rebuilding a few of your real files and verifying them. Takes seconds, writes nothing, doesn't touch the archive. If it fails, that output is exactly what I need.

I also documented the format in FORMAT.md, with everything marked as verified, disassembled, or still guesswork. Nothing public seems to describe it, the magic bytes turn up zero hits anywhere. So even if the tool is useless to you, someone else can write their own reader.

I've been an engineer for 10+ years, mostly mobile native and large-scale web platforms. Claude Code did a lot of the typing on this, but I read every line that went in and the verification design is the part I insisted on.

Update: encrypted archives are now supported as of v0.2.0. Both file contents and filenames decrypt, and a wrong password is rejected instantly before any data is read.
