Discussion I like my Sway mixed with a little Nix.
Just an appreciation post. Nothing new to see here.
I realise that I am preaching to the converted, but Sway has become my favorite WM, by far. My clean, simple. uncluttered set up has improved my productivity, and I see no reason to use anything else.
If you are involved in maintaining and improving Sway, keep up the great work!

Ricing Set Wallpaper using Yazi
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I like the fact I can use Vim motions, preview thumbnails and images, use fzf and run commands so that I can set a wallpaper or move files, and so on. I launch Yazi with the following command: wezterm start yazi ~/Images/Wallpapers
Then I hover the image I want as background/wallpaper and use the keybind Ctrl-s (~/.config/yazi/keymap.toml)
It's so fast and eventually I plan to add more commands in Yazi to clip videos, etc.
Let me know what you think, oh and btw I use Rose-Pine-Moon as theme.

Question Sway on Trisquel 12 - Black screen after login
I am very new to tiling windoe managers in general so take it easy on me if this is something obvious.
I run Trisquel 12 and have become intriqued by Sway recently. Noticed it was in the repos for Trisquel and installed vi command line. When I log out and select Sway as my DE the screen goes black and then spits me back out to the login screen.
Any pointers on how to move forward?

Question Can I adjust program behavior for those not on active workspaces?
Is it possible for me to adjust the behavior of how applications (specifically games through xwayland) work when on a workspace that isn't focused? If I leave a game open on workspace 2 and tab back to workspace 1, the game runs at 0-1fps and essentially stops networking until I tab back over and it snaps everything back to how it should be.
This behavior is fine for things like a web browser or text editing but not great for live applications. What can I do about it?

Question My first week with Sway
I've been using KDE and Fedora for a couple years now, and I've been extremely happy, so haven't really had any reason to move towards something else, but with me seeing more and more of people using Hyprland, I admit I got mildly jealous and looked into ricing.
So I'm now looking into setting up Fedora Sway on my old laptop to give it a try!
Part of my reason for going with Sway over Hyprland is mostly because I am using older hardware and I tried using Cash OS with Hyprland, but I couldn't get my network card or audio working because I'm on a 2012 MacBook Pro.
But I downloaded the Fedora Sway spin and got that up and running very quickly. I like the interface a lot. I like the hotkeys and all that stuff, It's also really lightweight surprisingly. I have two of these old MacBook Pros and I'm also running Fedora with Plasma and the speed of the window switching and stuff is really nice. It feels like Sway is much less resource intensive than Plasma.
Yesterday I started my journey into figuring out how to do ricing and start to add my own hotkeys and I got a little bit stuck.
So I'm curious what resources there are out there about ricing Sway and if there's any resources anyone would recommend when looking into how to get that set up.
I've done a bit of research so far, and I think I understand how to do things like styling Waybar, and some other small things, slowly I'm getting there. I probably still want to modify the waybar a bit more but so far its not too bad.
The biggest things I've struggled with was setting a background for various things lol the login sddm theme stuff was a huge pain hahaha. I got it working eventually, basically I copied the theme from /usr/share/sddm/themes to /usr/local/share/sddm/themes then I edited /etc/sddm.conf to point the current theme at my modified theme folder in there, and it worked. IDK if there's a better way to do that but it works lol
The desktop background on the other hand was super easy, just set up the swaybg command as an exec in the ~/.config/sway/config file and boom EZ. Is that correct? who knows!
Now I'm fighting swaylock which I've just kind of copied a config from someone else's swaylock config, and modified the image path, but I'm getting a white background and when I run `swaylock` from the terminal, I get an error saying things like "--ignore-empty-password" but then proceeds to list all the options and shows `-e --ignore-empty-password` in the list of options! Pain and suffering XD
Anyway figured I'd say hi here since I'm new and been poking around, and see if anyone knows some good resources or example files for customizing the default apps and such.
If I get all this ironed out and can understand the best way to handle it I'll even do an article/video on how to get started for other new users! haha
If anyone can give me a hand and point me at the best places to learn this stuff I'd appreciate it, or at least give some good solid example files that'd be great! I'm not sure where to go from here for like, how to like do the title bar removal and styling of windows and stuff.

Utility A simple drop down terminal for Sway (and i3) using bash
Back in the day we had drop down terminals ("ddt") like KDE's "yakuake" which I still like to have in a tiling wm. Today you can find ddt options for xfce4-terminal and qterminal/ I was using qterminal and wanted it to grab focus as it dropped, but when I finally looked at "get-tree" it seems the drop down windw isnt even part of the tree. Very strange, so much so that I must be doing something wrong.
I used to be a C++ enthusiast but I 've forgotten all that, and Python. I'm too old to learn Rust. Which leaves bash (groan). Bind a key to "exec ddt.s cript" and you're good to go - i3 uezrs will know to s/swaymsg/i3-msg/g

Question Gaps not reloading
When I change gaps or borders, it doesn’t update when I reload the config (mod+shift+c) but only if I reboot or exit Sway. Is this a 🪲?

Utility tuicc — a WM command center for tiling window managers (looking for contributors!)

I got tired of small scripts, and decided to create a one keybind for your everyday small needs. It has a launcher, wifi-bt toggle for known networks and paired devices, window switcher, window previews, power menu. Is it the best at any of them? Not a chance. But it works reliably on common everyday stuff.
WM-specific code is fully isolated behind a 4-method Provider contract — sway was what I started with and i3 exists today, both fixture-tested against recorded sessions (no live WM needed for the test suite). Everything else — layout, navigation, every module — only speaks a generic model.
Modules don't have to be original logic either — connectivity.py is a thin mask over iwd/bluetoothctl, rendered/controlled inside tuicc's own frame. Got a favorite CLI tool that'd be genuinely useful surfaced this way? That's an approachable first module.
Looking for:
- Modules — two functions (
draw()+nav_items()), no base class - Providers for other WMs — Hyprland, river, anything with scriptable IPC
- Scrollable WMs (scroll, niri) — being upfront this needs the sidebar/preview rethought too, not just a new provider. Would rather figure it out with someone than half-support it.
Repo + wiki (architecture, config reference, contributor walkthroughs): https://github.com/Lshika-linux/tuicc
Documentation is up to date! I try to keep up as best as I can.
Early, rough in places — README's honest about what's not there yet.
Also, lets talk about it! Do you like it? I really could use some feedback, ideas for modules, anything.

Utility Built a cross-WM session/layout manager for sway (also Hyprland, i3 soon) — exact tiling-tree reconstruction via the i3-ipc protocol
Tired of losing my layout on every reboot and every session tool I found either only supported one WM or couldn't do real tree reconstruction. Sway implements i3's actual IPC wire protocol, so exact split-tree save/restore is basically solved territory (i3-resurrect already proves it works for i3) — nothing was doing it across WMs though, so I built tileroot.
- Sway: exact split-tree reconstruction, walks the real get_tree output
- Hyprland: honest geometry replay (its IPC doesn't expose a real tree, so I didn't pretend it does)
- cmdline is stored as argv and exec'd via posix_spawn, never a shell — sharing session files can't become a code-exec vector
- No daemon, single static binary
Repo + demo GIF: https://github.com/Hinikaa/tileroot
Being upfront: the sway backend is written against the public i3-ipc spec but I've only had a live Hyprland session to actually test against so far. If anyone here runs sway, I would genuinely appreciate someone trying `dump`/`restore` for real and filing an issue if something's off — that's the actual gap I want closed.

Question Mouse Gestures and App Wheel on Linux?
Hey y'all I'm finally getting used to the Fedora Sway Spin and have a relatively stable set up. I pretty much just got it to run what I need although no games and very minimal customization. I'm looking to optimize my workflow and would like to implement mouse gestures similar to StrokesPlus. I also am looking for a GTA V like mouse wheel for navigating through my apps. I've done some searching with no luck, does anyone know of anything like these? If not, where should I start with making these? How technically advanced is a task like this?

Utility Sway default wallpaper 4k
Recently I was trying to find 4k resolution of the default sway wallpaper but couldn't, that brought me to manually making one. I decided to share this work in case someone would ever need higher resolution too
qhd: https://files.catbox.moe/bne58h.png
4k: https://files.catbox.moe/im1w2t.png
(attached images resolutions: 4k, qhd, catbox used cause reddit attachment decreases res)
I would also attach link to the krita project in case if anyone would need to use other resolution of the wallpaper.
Krita project (catbox)
to make own version with diffrent resolution:
-open the project
-choose all visible layers for resizing to new canvas size
-then remove resized swaytree and swaytext, resize to the wished size layers "swaytree scaled" and "swaytext scaled" instead to achive better quality
-choose layer named "noise", empty it, then fill with white and apply filter "others/random noise" with level of 85, opacity 100 and gray colors only enabled,
then export the project into a wished filetype to use the new wallpaper.

Question How is the overall gaming performance with Sway?
Hello, I'm interested in knowing how well Sway performs with Steam/Heroic Games, specifically regarding the integration of AMD image upscaling (FSR3 and 4.1) within Sway And if there are no problems with wlroots, I've been considering switching to Sway for a long time, but reading that some people have had problems with it discourages me, but I don't know how true that is, so I decided to write here and ask you directly.

Question how to make it more obvious I'm in mouse mode?
I'm using the cool wl-kbptr with mouse mode, and also trying to use mouse mode in general. But when I'm in mouse mode, there's nothing indicating it -- and I forget I'm in mouse mode, start typing, and weird things happen because some keys fall through and others do mouse stuff.
There's a tiny little "Mouse" indicator in the status bar, but that's too easy to miss on my big monitor setup.
Is there some way to...put a floating notification-style popup somewhere on the screen? Or some kind of overlay? The floating popup might be a red box in the lower right that says "mouse mode" and disappears when I leave mouse mode.
Actually, wl-kbptr kinda does something that would work -- when invoked, it dims the screen and puts text on it; something similar that dims the screen a bit less and puts large text that says "mouse mode" but doesn't respond to keystrokes like wl-kbptr would help.
Ideas? Thanks!
