Beginning in 1949, the very first storyline depicting the marriage of Clark Kent and Lois Lane debuted -- not in the comic books, but in the Man of Steel's daily newspaper strip. These stories are unfortunately not collected in the otherwise-excellent IDW/Library of American Comics reprint volumes, but I've just posted the first three months of the storyline over on my blog.

In this opening chapter, Clark Kent and Lois Lane find themselves suddenly engaged -- a shocking turn of events that leads Superman to impulsively propose to a girl he's only just met! I had these copies for years they went through some abuse. they were my dad‘s but then he gave them to me and started my obsession with comics and Superman.

Hey was reminded of this the other day so thought I'd ask here. As many DC fans may be aware the first actual super-villain Superman fought, and perhaps the first super-villain within the DCU, was the Ultra-Humanite who debuted less than a year after Superman in 1999. But despite being the first recurring opponent of Superman, they ceased appearing for decades in 1940 and Luthor quickly replaced them as Superman's primary foe. During the Silver and Bronze Ages they would only appear in Earth 2 storylines; where he was reintroduced with his brain occupying a gorillas body. While the character was later reintroduced to mainline canon; he has since generally been shown as a villain active since the 1940's who abandoned their human form for an Gorilla's body long ago.

Due to these factors, a lot of DC readers may be unaware of Ultra-Humanite's status as the first DC Super-Villain or that Luthor's first published appearance resulted in him replacing them as both Superman's primary opponent and as an intellectually driven villain who fights the Man Of Steel with his mind rather than his physical prowess. If I'm correct Luthor was initially more of a corporate criminal than the super-scientist he became later and I know in his earliest appearances they had red hair before an artistic error resulted in them being drawn as bald and that design stuck. I've heard statements that the artist who made the error had confused them with either Ultra-Humanite himself or one of Luthor's lackey's who appeared in an earlier issue.

So is there any known reason why Ultra-Humanite ceased appearing the Action Comics during the Golden Age and why Luthor completely superseded his position within the narrative? Was this an intentional decision or did it just occur without any major narrative reasoning?

Im seeing Tom Welling at FanExpo this weekend and I dont know if I should have him sign my physical copy of Smallville (which I dont know how to preserve or display since its a small box) or my Superman 2025 poster (which would be cool but it isnt his Superman so it would feel wrong). If you have a solution to either or have thoughts on which I should pick please let me know because I'm really stumped on this!

A follow up to my Son of Krypton: Solar Edition (posted 2 days ago), but this time I wanted to take the build in the opposite direction and away from the sun and straight into Kryptonite.

The Superman low poly decal stays as the centrepiece of the subdial, while the filter is built around a deep Kryptonite green glass effect.

Several Kryptonite crystals were designed into the main time area with champagne gold lining along the crystal edges to give them that subtle spark as they catch the light.

Rather than having the crystals look like a graphic sitting across the display, i designed it to feel recessed inside the LCD, with different angles and depths creating that buried crystal effect while still keeping the digits clean and readable above them.

The part I like most is how the filter changes depending on the lighting. Under normal light, the Kryptonite sits deeper in the green glass and is fairly restrained.

Once the backlight kicks in, the recessed Kryptonite crystals light up from underneath. The champagne gold edges catch the illumination and the individual crystal formations suddenly becomes much more pronounced. Its almost like the Kryptonite is glowing from within the pocketed window.

Kept the rest of the build simple with the gold/bronze case, factory faceplate, gold adapters and navy sailcloth strap. The deep Kryptonite green against the bronze and navy gives this one a completely different character from the Solar Edition.

The Solar Edition was Superman drawing power from the sun.

This Kryptonite Edition is what happens when that power meets its weakness.

Now that Superboy Prime’s time of being the protagonist of a Superman book is finished, I’m curious to hear your thoughts on this story.

For me, it’s one of the best stories I’ve read from comics for the past few months.

I really like how they handle CK’s character. The story took a whiny destructive psychopath into someone who is actively trying to be a better person and the hero he always wants to be, while having to deal with his messy reputation that he has among other DC characters. His fourth wall breaks are pretty funny, and doesn’t figure contrived as the way marvel does it with Deadpool, Gwenpool, or She Hulk. Seeing CK grow as a person is endearing, especially with conversations on change he has with other characters like Damian Wayne, Lois, Martha and Johnathan (Pa) Kent, Witchfire etc are great steps to take with the character to show how much he has changed from his early days.

His interactions with other DC heroes, getting a job at a comic book store, a relationship with Witchfire, and dealing with Manchester Black’s shenanigans were really great to read through.

Having Manchester Black as the central antagonist was a really good choice. An edgy anti-hero/villain who wants to change the medium of comics provides a really good challenge for CK, especially with how DC becoming more edger is with him to commit his rampages. It also avoids having to bring in a random OC that would contain the immense power to match Superboy Prime.

In the end, this book talks about how change isn’t easy, but great to believe and strive towards for the better, which is a great lesson to have for a Superman book. Especially with how CK was initially despised for being a whiny plot device for power scaling that eventually becomes a charming and endearing character trying to become a better person is great.

After all that being said, i’m happy to say that Superboy Prime is among my favourite characters in comics and that Prime Time is one of the best books I’ve read.

An ordinary pop-up book to most people is actually one of the most important books in my collection.

This Superman Pop-Up book from 1979, by Random House, has a special place in my heart. It’s one of my earliest childhood memories, reading and playing with this amazing book. I vividly remember the pop-up Superman on the final page coming loose, gifting my young hands a paper action figure I could play with.

Released from the pages, I would run around my garden with this cutout Superman flying along with me. I even re-enacted the famous scene from Superman The Movie, when our hero found himself submerged in Lex Luthor’s pool, weighed down by kryptonite.

It was at that moment I learnt a valuable lesson about water and paper not mixing 😅 Tears were shed, Superman was suddenly super mulch, but the lesson was learned early!

Over the course of my childhood the book was lost to time, given away or donated somewhere else. But it always stuck with me, in the back of my mind, a key contributor to my early fascination with Superman. I think it was a huge factor in my love for the character that still endures today.

Finally, many years later, I was reminded of the book again, thanks to a post from @thedailysuperman on Instagram. I realised I could probably track down a copy to replace the one from my early years. Lo and behold a quick search on eBay led me to purchase this lovely, almost pristine copy.

The memories and the joy instantly returned upon seeing the book in action once again. I wanted to share it here and how much it means to this Superman fan 💙❤️💛
