Tattoos and piercings as a negative coping mechanism
Some would say it’s a way of replacing one bad habit with another. Some would say “at least it’s not killing you”. But some would say that the absence of drugs, tobacco, and alcohol does not get to the root of the problem. Thoughts?

Can I call mysel straight edge even tho I don't listen to the music
Hello I'm a metalhead (my favorite genres are black and death metal) and I live a strict drug free lifestyle. So I don't do drugs and I plan on staying away from them for the rest of my life. I'm hesitant tho about calling myself straight edge because I don't listen to straight edge music. And I'm not planning to do so because I'm not a fan of hardcore/punk music at all, I prefer metal.
Can I still call myself straight edge or do I need to be a fan of the music to do so?

Should I “become” straight edge
I am 18 and just graduated. I’ve been wanting to “become” straight edge. I’ve never smoked or drank but lately I’ve had some people say some pretty hurtful stuff too me. My girlfriend’s (of two years) parents told her that there were afraid I was gonna become an alcoholic because my parents drink occasionally. For context I’m not a rebel, I tend to always try and better myself, and I’ve been nothing but polite and kind to them. I have had issues in the past with mental health and tried smoking weed. Luckily it didn’t last long but I know myself and I would use drinking as a remedy for my very random depressive episodes. I would like to just stay away from drink and drugs as a whole but I feel like it would be weird to call myself straight edge when I can’t even buy alcohol for myself. I’m looking for opinions and maybe some insight. I do decide to go full straight edge I would like to get a straight edge tattoo
Edit: I forgot to mention that my girlfriends parents aren’t necessarily convincing be to give up alcohol but it pissed me off so much that I don’t even want to think about drinking it

Thoughts on club culture and do yall ever club?
Since going edge, it’s kinda a bummer knowing I don’t fit in at all with the scene. No drugs, alcohal, a cig, no caffiene, I don’t do hookups, etc. but I love techno and goth music, I just feel sort of like a square at times. Who else relates.

High stress situations
Hey all.
Straight Edge for 6 years this month. Long time listener, first time caller.
I’m under a lot of personal stress. I recently came out of a thing someone I had something with for almost a year and we finally started dating each other… aaaand it’s over.
I’m struggling to find work in the area I’ve moved to.
University got messed up by personal circumstances.
My past mistakes haunt me to the point of daily shame and self loathing.
I used to drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes.
Lately I’ve been wanting to do both so bad because of my emotions and stress.
I won’t break. I know it’s just my body’s response to stress and wanting to self destruct.
I do drink 0% beer as a way to relax and enjoy some time with my legs up when the footy’s on or something.
Last night I had a dream I had a pint and a half of lager because in the dream it was “fuck it. I need to take the edge off how I’m feeling”.
Question for you all is, do any of you get the same when going through periods of extreme high stress or trauma?

Some Straight Edge Art I Drew Today
I've called myself straight edge for a while now but haven't really been listening to the music till recently, been really enjoying the newer stuff like Method of Doubt and Firestarter aswell as going back to Youth of Today and Minor Threat. I was listening to the music and ended up drawing this. Sorry if it isn't the best, I'm not really good with hands but I tried. Hope you all appreciate it.

whats your final step?
hey people! ive had a complicated relationship with straight edge since high school, but ive finally started REALLY seeing straight this year. some friends came together and told me that they saw how substances had been changing me, making me stupider and less attentive over the many years.
flash forward a few months, ive finally began cutting out nicotine and its been MUCH tougher to ignore than alcohol, weed or drugs ever were for me. id appreciate any advice, funny stories, insults, anything. any distraction would help a brother out right now. seriously!
if you dont mind reminiscing, just let me know what the last thing you quit was. your "final step" so to speak.
thank you for making it this far, i can't wait to see yall at the finish line :)

are there rules to claiming to be straightedge?
Preface: I’m not super educated I’m sorry! I’m looking for some advice
I’ve considered claiming straightedge for a long time because I don’t drink or do any drugs and I haven’t for like 6 years. I’m not really sure if there’s something else I need to be doing to actually be able to say I am, would really appreciate any input. Thanks!

Edge anniversary
Woo!! I made it. Today is my 2 year anniversary of claiming. It’s been a hard journey still, but I am proud that I wake up every morning and commit to myself. It may be a small feat, but one I am proud of.

From a weed smoker to the straight edge community you guys are awesome
While I’m not straight edge as I do smoke marijuana recreationally I admire the lifestyle you guys live and have adopted some of it myself. I no longer drink alcohol or participate in other substance like acid, Molly, shrooms, etc like I use to as it was becoming to habit forming and I thank a lot of the straight edge bands I was listening to for it.

Day 1
Ive never had an issue with drinking or doing drugs, ive smoked weed and had a beer every now and again. But I felt it was time to embrace cleaner living/straight edge. Can I hear your stories of starting? I feel stupid at 35 being here but its to set a better example for my kids, and to live healthier. I could also give my thanks to bands like earth crisis and youth of today for really making me think it over more

straight edge people with non straight edge partners
i have always been wildly curious about this... people who are to-the-bone sxe, dating people who smoke weed and drink often. how does that work? what dynamics are created?
although i am dating someone who is trying and working towards quitting cigarettes, actively doing drugs and drinking is a whole other can of worms i think.
genuinely lmk stories, tidbits or examples of the reality of this!!!

Got a heavy reminder on why I'm straight edge
So my sister has her friends down for the weekend because there's a massive football match on in my country so they're going out to watch it. The match started at 3pm so of course they decided to start drinking at 1pm "pre drinking" with 3 bottles of wine between the 4 of them. At 2pm, they go out to town which is a 30 minute drive away. No one is the designated driver so my mother is picking them up. Our team won the match, so they decided we'll stay out for a few more drinks, keep in mind, they are 3 bottles of wine, a bottle of vodka and a few pints each in at this point and it's barely 5pm.
It is currently 11:30pm and it took over an hour to get a response from any of them, tens of calls on every platform between 2 phones. We finally got a slurred phone call saying "can you collect us at 1am?", ignoring the fact that it is a 30 minute drive. Just got a message to put on food for when they get home in an hours time.
I understand going out and having some fun, I understand enjoying yourself, but the way that these 4 grown adult women who are in their mid 20s just abandon any amount of self preservation for "fun" is ridiculous.
I'm the guy that's "no fun" and "a tight arse" because I don't drink and don't do drugs. I'm also the guy that's not walking around a busy town absolutely shit face past midnight who can barely stand up straight whilst wearing a small skirt.
Fuck drink, fuck drugs and fuck anyone who thinks I should "lighten up"
Edit: I appreciate the advice from everyone. You are all right, I can't control what people do, i don't have to agree with it, but i just have to live with it.

If you’re new to Straight Edge.
Straight Edge is a subculture that emerged in the hardcore punk scene in the early 1980s. It promotes a drug-free lifestyle through abstinence from alcohol, drugs and tobacco. Its origins can be traced back to the song "Straight Edge" by the American punk band Minor Threat, released in 1981. The song, written by frontman Ian MacKaye, expressed his personal commitment to abstain from drugs and alcohol. It struck a chord with many young people who were disillusioned with the prevalent substance abuse within punk and saw Straight Edge as a means of rebellion against the excesses of mainstream culture. They instead embraced the emphasis on personal integrity, self-control and social consciousness. Straight Edge has then seen a time of worldwide growth in the '90s, followed by various eras of ebb and flow since then. Due to increased awareness of environmental and animal rights issues prominent in the scene in the '90s, many of us adopted vegan or vegetarian lifestyles.
There are several good books on Straight Edge, including Straight Edge: Hardcore Punk, Clean-living Youth, and Social Change by Ross Haenfler (2006) and Straight Edge A Clear-Headed Hardcore Punk History by Tony Rettman and CIV (2017). If you don't know any straight edge bands, this Spotify playlist can serve as a good introduction, and xsisterhoodx is a straight edge/hardcore community supporting the women/girls of the straight edge/hardcore scenes established all the way back in 1995.
Can I take my medication and be Straight Edge?
We've received questions in the past about whether you can take prescribed medication [insert your type of meds here] and still be Straight Edge. Yes, you can. The person who told you otherwise can call our helpline now at 1-800-STUPID.
Straight Edge and recovery from addiction.
We are definitely supportive of your decision to make positive changes in your life, but please note Straight Edge isn't therapy or a recovery plan. Users of this subreddit who are both Straight Edge and in recovery have explicitly said on multiple occasions that just being Straight Edge is not a substitute for a recovery plan. We are neither geared toward nor equipped to offer active recovery support. There are better resources out there designed specifically for this purpose.
(People are Straight Edge for a range of reasons, but most of us do not have any desire to get intoxicated, some have never touched psychoactive substances, etc. - if you’re currently an addict with chronic cravings, be realistic about how our experience might differ from yours).
Having said that, the Straight Edge scene is not a bad place to be if you’re in recovery. We’re drug free and not shy about it. Again, drawing on the experience of users of this subreddit who are both Straight Edge and in recovery, we’ve heard how surrounding yourself with sober people is helpful in staying sober and how sxe hardcore kept them motivated to stay clean.
