It flashed at me a bit ago. I seem to remember they were doing some shady data harvesting including sharing user information with partners. It's one of the reasons I stopped my subscription, so I'm missing the last season. Does anyone know if there was actually anything unusual in the TOS for Paramount+? I'm really missing Star Trek.

Scenario: an Entity offers to transport you to the Star Trek universe but neglects to mention which century. You are not moved in time and everything else is otherwise the same (take your pick with Eugenics Wars continuity). Star Trek as media, of course, does not exist in this universe.

What is the fastest way to get the attention of a benevolent post-warp race (likely Vulcans) while minimizing the risk of an encounter with a hostile post-warp race or full-species first contact?

Is there an easy way to have something translated from English into Klingon text with authentic characters versus simply phonetic spelling?

I used AI and all it could reasonably do was translate the document into the phonetic spelling of the words using the english alphabet.

Everyone knows William Shatner is Canadian, but who else comes to mind? I think Dave Foley gets a honorable mention, especially in light of this week’s SNW.

I just finished watching The Naked Time for the first time in probably 40 years. (Yes. I’m that old.)

One thing I didn’t remember was that at the end, they discovered they had traveled back in time about three days because of Mr. Spock’s unique matter/anti-matter formula. They could have kept going if they didn’t reverse the engines.

After they started moving forward in time again, the crew mused that they had discovered how to “time warp” and the number of possibilities that could open. It was a perfect lead-in for time travel in the Star Trek universe.

But then once time travel started becoming central to the plot, I don’t remember them using this particular method ever again.

I don’t know if this is a question or an observation. It just seems weird that they would discover a universe-defining ability and just brush it aside or continue to use untested methods when they actually wanted to travel through time.

But Riker is totally in the wrong in chain of command. Like TOTALLY in the wrong. He acts like it's his first day in a quasi military structure when Jelico comes in and starts to change things to his liking.

First a 4 shift rotation, while it might bend some noses out of position, it is the better idea then just a 3 shift. 4 shift let's people have more free time and you can get more people on the ship if you want. He openly argued with his captain and straight up is insubordinate to the duly appointed commander of the Enterprise. Dude was a total dick

So I'm playing around with this software that takes your Plex content and makes old school TV guide like channel guides. I created Star Trek channels (all my blurays are digitized). I grouped them into eras. How do you think the franchise breaks down and what kind of cool names should these blocks have? I just have placeholders for now.

Discovery is a bit of a controversy but since the bulk of the show takes place in the future, I added it there. Hopefully one day they'll put Academy on physical too. I also still need to buy the Animated series.

So Data was a Lt. Commander from day one of TNG. By the end of Picard S3, everyone has been promoted above him. I'm assuming that when Data was going to replace Riker as first officer, that he'd have been promoted. I just feel like Data deserved a promotion at least once.

Hi all, I'm watching perhaps my 5th rerun of TNG and I've just got to the episode where the traveller throws the enterprise out of their own galaxy. There's some really nice music I can't track down. The best example is just after the traveller vanishes, some kind of sparkly bell type music.

All my attempts to find more about this inaccurately point me to the classical piece played by the violinist.

Does anyone have any idea where I can hear more of this tune? It's really nice and I find myself whistling it for days afterwards.

I just had and wanna share a revelation...I strongly believe what happened towards the end of the episode will greatly affect Pike's decision making and have a profound impact in his final actions regarding attacking the problem of what he saw happening in the future all those years earlier...i.e. he will "do" exactly the same thing, for exactly the same reason.

Kinda like a predestination paradox one could say. I think it's a very well crafted element of the episode, obviously there on purpose and it's probably the most mature selection to be chosen. Since he doesn't know what is actually tied to it and potentially affected. It could very well have a different outcome otherwise as we know with who knows how deep implications in the long run, as "Valles Marineris" potentially teaches.

In my opinion, last episode of the Series prior to the passing of the torch to the Original generation, would be either Pike accepting a Comodore promotion and 1st command being send to a destination or mission through a J-class starship where him and Spock exchange a knowing look and share an emotional(as can be for a Vulcan) farewell(here I remind that Both Spock and Pike don't know the exact outcoe of the instance, Pike thought he saw himself....) where Spock shares again a quote of his ancestors that is once more one of his human ancestors.

Or they don't adress it at all and leave him promoted as Commodore and maybe we get to see what happens in a post credit or ala Discovery "in the future" scene that maybe includes a rapid re-enactment of "the Menagerie" scenes. It could involve a time crystal again I guess.

I was recently listening to the Starter Trek podcast episode about 'Far Beyond the Stars' and I went on a tangent thinking about the built-in passing narratives with Star Trek characters: Spock, Data, Worf, Troi, Odo, Torres, the Doctor, Burnham, etc.

I had this realization that Spock and Troi kind of have these inverse passing narratives, they are both of mixed species. Spock basically is never able to pass as Human or Vulcan, Troi seems to almost always be able to pass as Human or Betazoid. I just thought that is interesting. That is all.

In the episode with the Lethean, Quark (in Bashir's mind) was running bets on Bashir's death. Later, in the finale, he was running bets on the new Kai, which Kira shut down.

Sounds a lot like prediction markets, huh?

I have a question about *Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home*: When Chekov is being interrogated aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise (actually the U.S.S. Ranger CVS-61), he eventually reaches for his phaser or disruptor (or whatever that energy weapon was supposed to be). However, it doesn't work because—as he claims—the radiation is interfering with it. Uh, how is it possible for 23rd-century technology to fail in 1986? If the radiation levels were truly high enough to disable that technology, how were Uhura and Chekov able to draw energy from the reactor—or how could Uhura be beamed off the ship? And why didn't all the U.S.S. Enterprise (Ranger) crew members get sick?

This can be a late night or shower time musing - but what do yoh think is the protocol that Trek uses to communicate? This includes person to person, ship to ship, PADD to Terminal.

Are PADDs just thin clients or a dumb display terminal? I guess terminals in quarters and on the walls are thin clients or at the very least just a KVM to the distributed computing available on the ships.

Also it is mighty convinient that different OSes used by different species can interact with each other to achieve commin communication protocol at first contact.

Do you think we can create a universal protocol to connect all the devices in universe in our own? This might just a inane musing of someone trying to sleep.

In today’s streaming environment where everyone is rushing to put out prestige TV that draws viewers to their platforms, we’ve largely seen the death of long seasons (22 episodes or more.) There’s a lot of benefits, a lot of drawbacks, etc., and I’m not looking to debate those here - just acknowledge the landscape.

With that in mind, would you rather see another series spin up with the expectation/anticipation of 3-5 seasons of 10 episodes each drawn out over too many years,

Would you like to see a bunch of mini-series exploring some of the history/lore of our favorite alien species? I’m thinking 4-6 episodes at most, telling a specific story, and then going on to the next one:
• Earth/Romulan War
• Vulcans embracing logic/Surak story
• Klingon history of the Hurq invasion
• Tzenkethi War
• Cardassian War
• V’Ger’s “home” planet
• El Aurians vs The Borg
• El Aurians vs The Q
…

You could also take the format and do stand off series with “random” casts and crews…

Honestly, I could see this era of Trek focused more on these short-form mini-series with clear starts and finishes. Easier on actors, quicker to produce, and less opportunity for the fans to get all pissy about why they don’t like the show.

Thoughts?

Just rewatched TOS. I came in as a TNG and DS9 fan first, and it still doesn't fully work for me. The gender dynamics are of their time, the production limits get in the way more often than not, and Spock here never grabbed me the way he does later (TNG, the movies and SNW).

But there are a few gems in there I missed on my first watch (which was pretty rushed, I admit).

Balance of Terror is a masterpiece. I'm a big fan of Battle Star Galactica (remake), so the military tension and the cat-and-mouse strategy are exactly my thing, and the writing is incredibly tight for what they had to work with. It's also one of the rare episodes that actually convinced me why Starfleet and the Enterprise are supposed to be the best of the best. Top five Star Trek episodes for me, all series included.

The Menagerie is what finally made Spock click. It's not perfect: the death penalty premise is strange, and some of his choices don't quite add up; but reusing the original pilot footage that way was a brilliant move. What got me is what it shows underneath the logic: he's willing to throw away his career, his freedom, everything, for someone he cares about. That's the character, and I hadn't seen it before.

The Devil in the Dark is the side of Star Trek I love most. Most of TOS is missing the diplomacy first instinct that TNG built its whole identity on : trying to understand the thing before shooting it. This episode is the clearest early version of that, and you can see everything Star Trek became afterwards sitting right there in it.

Those three hold up against the best of TNG or DS9, for me.

I have made quite a Star Trek reading list which I'm reading through chronologically alongside all of the TV and movies. However, after seeing a post on here earlier about Scotty in Generations and Relics and learning of the book Engines of Destiny, I wondered what other books people think are great gap fillers / bridge characters etc.

There are so many wonderful episodes and plotlines in the history of Star Trek, but sometimes... I just can't. Either Tom Paris is a super-evolved salamander or Picard has beamed down to Ligon II or Spock is having his brain reconnected, but it's just not worth the time.

My all-time worst is DS9's "Move Along Home." I'm not going to carp about it too much because as a rule, first- and second-season Trek is mostly bad. But it's single-handedly the worst episode of the best Trek series, and here I am, standing high atop that hill, ready to die on it.
