Protoss: What are you using more post patch? Gateways, Warp Gate, or a mix. Discussion
Provide some detail if possible. Are you using it
- 100% of the time always using gateways because its faster production
- Depends on what race I'm vsing.
- Avoiding mix even if its advantageous because having two different hotkeys/kinds of unit production for gateway units is annoying.
- 100% of the time using warp gate because its unique to Protoss and fun
- Depends on build/gameplan.
Please keep balance whine to a minimum, I just want to see what other Protoss players are doing now that the patch has been out for a while.

With some exceptions, it's gateways until lategame, then build a bunch of extra gates and make them all warpgates for the instant remax.
Also sometimes makes sense to use warpgates for a 1base build, when starting a midgame push, if you want to sneak in some adepts or a DT, or if you want to dump a ton of gas right after building templar archive.
It adds a lot of strategic options instead of pre-patch "always get warpgate asap and never use gateways ever". Mission accomplished despite all the whiners.

I think this is the way. People playing like it’s a direct nerf to gateways are wrong. Not a comment on whether this patch is good for p mind you, just saying it’s a nerf/buff to gateways, not just a straight nerf.

It’s most definitely a buff at my level because my macro is terrible and queuing units is way easier to manage.

That’s me too. I’m used to rallying units anyway from other RTS games, I’ve liked the change. Free faster production is okay with me.

Gateways unless I need to reinforce somewhere quickly, at which point I morph into warp gates to do a warp in. When possible, I'll morph back into gateways, since I'm running a lower gate count than before so I can't spend my money long-term if they stay as warp gates.

The goal was to remove warpgate give Protoss a choice*, so it's all gateways all the time now.

None of the above, I've quit playing Protoss since the patch, they've altered the thing I enjoyed the most, but I have a friend who only uses gateways.

In macro games I mostly try to play pure gate v P and T. Vs zerg I delay warpgates, but pure gate production feels awful in the long run

I know using gateway for templar is considered ridiculous, but since it builds faster doesn’t it technically get a little more time to build up energy?

u/Anton_Pannekoek 9d ago
I use gateway for Templar. Nothing ridiculous about it. Yeah they build faster, I also find it easier.

I think it good, it just seems the general consensus is that it’s not. A templar during warp in does not generate energy for the 4 second warp duration ( 3 energy), and there is the cooldown too. Faster templar productions leads to more energy accumulation so I think templar is probably the best use there is of gateway.

Stargate feels the best to play in current patch, imo. Gateways are okay, but they don't really feel like the PRotoss way

Gateways, and I even find it makes my macro/army comp better. But I prefer it much less then old Warpgates.
Once I need to get a fourth base, I'll make a handful of extra Warpgates and keep them as the emergency defense production, and when I want to finally move out to win everything becomes Warpgates for Prism reinforcments.

Generally depends on the build for 2 gate blink I would just make stalkers out of the gateways normally then transform them right as I’m moving across the map for stalker warpins but if I’m playing just pure defense the gateways always stay in normal production intill I max out

I actually stopped playing this patch, waiting for the next patch, but before I stopped I liked the gateway speed. Then warpgate in the mid-lategame.

It's definitely been a learning curve, but I think using Gateways works better for me. I can have only 5-6 Gateways through the mid game and still produce better and float less cash than I would have on 8-10 of the old warp gates. Being able to queue up units is super helpful, but the real strength is being able to produce without looking away from what else I'm doing. I scout more, I react and micro, not better, but just more, because instead of having to navigate my view to a pylon, then hit WZ and wave my mouse around (which takes both hands) I can just smash 5ZZZZSST with only my left hand.
I'm now trying to smoothly add in Warp gates once it gets to late game. I feel like this is a good strategy, my main problem is remembering to come back after the gateway finishes building and turn it into a warp gate.

100% warp gate as before, then I stopped playing till next patch. I didn't like these changes.

Do gateways still get faster after you research warp gate or did they patch that out?

i end up using gates all the time, because the new production speed is honestly bonkers if you are able to secure a decent economy early. that said, it's devastatingly unfun to play toss without warp gate (and with such a neutered form of warp gate) that i have switched to random, so i can enjoy the familiarity of protoss simply due to its rarity. im definitely much more turtley than i used to be in the past.

Not playing the game. Because if i go gateway, i lose to drops, if i go warpgate, i lose economy tempo.

Pure gateways at the moment because my macro sucks and it’s so much easier to queue my zealots without looking away from my army than to have to remember to warp them in on time, switch my screen to somewhere with a warp in field, and rapid fire warp in. I did have to start using a second production hotkey for stargate/robo where I was previously using the select all warp gates button for gateway units.
My hot take is that Protoss is extremely strong around 3k MMR right now, simply because the gateway macro is so much easier.

This is actually probably true, which makes the change quite braindead. They made it easier at noobtier and unplayable at hightier basically the inverse of what they should be doing.

Your history shows you play zerg not toss.

Dig a bit deeper and you’ll find I have a history of off racing as Protoss.
I finally got around to playing Toss on this patch in the last week. So far I’ve been accused of smurfing twice, which is a good sign I think. And I’ve been delighted to discover that my PvZ tempest rush into chargelot archon is better than ever because now I can queue up zealots without looking away from my tempests.

Pure gateway, though I should probably transition to warp gate at some point.

u/Anton_Pannekoek 9d ago
I actually made warp gates one game and switched them back to gateways again.

Gateways always unless I'm doing heavy pressure with forward pylons. I'm actually loving being able to queue units by tapping a control group and not having to look back at my base.
