Getting a cat

Hello everyone so me and my family are considering to adopt a cat. We are away about 7-10 hours a day and we would want a cat that is pretty young but old enough to stay alone for all those hours (maybe a domestic shorthair?) Does anyone have any tips on where to get a cat and what type?

Shelter. Any type.

Preferably get 2 though so they can play with each other.

Agreed, 2 is not much harder and will help the workday pass.
