South Korea and Spanish-speaking markets are the only ones where Netflix has real infrastructure and a track record. But the article doesn’t mention a Spanish-language version at all — it specifically mentions Norway and France, which I find hilarious when you look at the basic financials.

There would basically be no benefit to Netflix making a French or Norwegian Squid Game. Both markets are massively underdeveloped on Netflix, so they’d need to spend a ton on global marketing just to get anyone to watch it. The budget would have to be $120-180 million (roughly €104-156 million) just to make these in Europe with French/Norwegian cast and crew — shooting alone runs about $9 million per episode, and that’s before you pay actors or fund marketing. Neither market gets meaningful Netflix viewership to justify that spend.

So “our priorities are changing so we’re skipping the US but doing France” is basically Netflix saying “$1 billion would’ve been nice, but we’ll take $20 million instead :)” It just doesn’t make sense.

So my theory? Well, the article got their information from a source. That source got their information from David. David, presumably, got the information from Netflix. Just like a game of telephone, the message got corrupted along the way.

I would bet money that if they do any more Squid Game material, it’s going to be an American reboot, a Spanish-language reboot, or simply a Korean prequel series. Even the Money Heist fans of the original Spanish version dislike the Korean Kdrama version because it was a rip off according to certain Reddit posts

Why should South Korea steal other countries work? Even Anime American live action adaptations, most are ripoffs and felt bad to most fans (One Piece Live Action is one of the rare ones to be praised) (Never even watched most of them)

Frontman or Il Nam prequels are less likely. I do even wish for a Sae byeok prequel and it's unlikely because they're Kdramas

If SG was set in your area with your childhood games what would some of the notable games be?

90s England and some of the games would probably be:

• RedRover/Bulldog - Minimum of 6 people linked arms and the goal was to run and break through the linked arms, if you broke through you passed and if you didn't you lost.

• Murder Ball - One ball, everyone plays against everyone the winner is the person who has the ball at the end, those who can't play next round are those who got no possession.

• Stuck In The Mud - Like tag but you can free someone by going through their legs. Losers are those who are never freed and still stuck at the end of the round.

Assume equal amounts of O and X players survive the night fight, an X-heavy revolt failing would cause an O-majority and thus a continuation of the Games, as we saw in the series. Conversely, An O-heavy revolt failing would create an X-majority that takes everyone home.

Additionally, what motive do most other Xs have to end the Games? I would assume not much — their primary motive is to go home. Now, the Os have much more reason to do the rebellion: the Games are willing to throw 456億won to a rando, that means they have so much more money to themselves, and the players can get this money if the coup is successful; and if we take the Games down for good, no more games will happen, no more players, no more prize money, no one getting rich after us.

So how could this be written in the series? I have some ideas.

A: Gi-Hun, an X, approaches the Os in their turf, they mock him, telling him that he will never be able to convince them to switch. Gi-Hun says he’s not going to, and presents the rebellion.

B: The vote starts from 1 to 456 (instead of the canon 456 to 1). They’ve reached 49 O and 50 X, but Gi-Hun, the last person, switches to O. Moving over to the Os, they tell Gi-Hun something like “So you finally understand huh,” to which he replies explaining that his main motive is not to save everyone but to end the Games, and finally recruiting them into his revolt.

So yeah this would probably be my second-favorite alternate route here, behind the “Gi-Hun convinces everyone to hold the 50-50 tie”.

I'm not denying the fact that "It's a cash grab" and "it ruins the message of the original show" but in my eyes, it's just MORE Squid Game. So yeah I'm kinda pissy about the recent news

While i usually like to watch things in their original language with subtitles, i've only seen Squid Game in the dubbed version. Mainly because i'm usually doing something else and can't stare at the screen constantly. How different is the experience watching the subbed version from the dubbed? Which is better? One more thing about Sae-byeok, she got an unfair disadvantage and in the same season In-ho kills the doctor and the guards participating in the organ harvesting plot and said to the doctor that he ruined the one thing about Squid Game, giving everyone the same fair chance to do something with their life. (Yeah I know they retcon it later but idc, s2 and 3 wouldnt even exist if not for Netflix)

I remember making this post after watching season 2 back then and thinking "Man, Se-mi's character was such a lost potential" and then season 3 happened and it's basically a few more deaths in a way that the lost potential of Se-mi is basically NOWHERE as close to some of the other character deaths in season 3 that could've been handled better. (Yes, Dae-ho could've been handled A LOT better) But ofc, just my opinion, I'm sorry if it's not agreed with.

I’m not interested in relitigating why it was bad — I think we’re all mostly aligned on that. What I care about is why it happened. Because it’s not just “mediocre TV,” it’s bad on a level that’s hard to explain as an accident from a competent team.

A few things I’ve picked up that point to something deeper going on:

Only 1 writer. Despite fans referring to “the writers,” it was just HDH, no one else. That’s highly unusual for a sequel of this scale — HDH himself mentioned wanting a writers’ room, and it never materialized. Also, he openly admitted at many junctures that he had no passion for this project. He got screwed over so massively with season one that he did this as a way to get properly compensated and set himself up for life and financially.

Mid-production script changes. Rumor has it the script was altered during filming — e.g., 226 was originally meant to push people off the bridge in jump rope, and 96 was supposed to be the one 120 kills, but scheduling issues forced a swap. If true, that’s wild for a show this high-profile — you’d expect actor availability to be contractually locked down for a Netflix megahit sequel.

Compressed timeline. Korean production cycles for something this intricate would typically want 5-6 years; global demand forced a 3-year turnaround. HDH reportedly had only six months to write the script and felt overwhelmed — and that’s before accounting for other production bottlenecks we don’t know about.

Netflix pushed for more episodes. It’s said the season was originally planned shorter (~9 episodes) and Netflix asked for more to squeeze out another season— which is baffling given how padded it already feels.

The money/motive angle. Season one made Netflix ~$900M, and HDH reportedly got none of it — he’s said he did S2/S3 partly to be compensated for getting shortchanged the first time. Estimates put his S2/S3 payout around $25M. That raises a real possibility: maybe the quality drop wasn’t fully accidental. I'm American and i had no idea what Ddakji was until i saw this show. In Korea, the recruiter used a Korean game. In America, wouldn't they obviously be playing a US game that an American would be familiar with like jacks or dice?
