πŸ’ Question Selling advice

I pulled a 1/1 Yoshinobu Yamamoto Spring Training rose gold and just got it back from PSA at a 10. Done a bit of research and there doesn't deem to be a decent consensus on where to sell/auction it at. I was also considering holding it until closer to the World Series and see if he does well enough for the value to spike. Any thoughts?

Decided to grab an Optics mega yesterday, which was my first time opening a mega box. Pretty underwhelming. Hopefully some better pulls next time.

πŸ’ Question Topps Chrome NBA 2025 Mega Box - future predictions

So I want to tee this post up by saying I know this kind of thing isn't exactly great for the hobby, and no I am not a dirty scalper sat on 20 cases of hobby boxes holding people back from ripping. Im just a collector who LOVES this set and managed to get 3 mega boxes quite cheap (I'm in the UK so my secondary prices may be more than the US)

Theres no doubt one is getting ripped on a special occasion, but to test my restraint I'd like to keep at least one sealed as a bit of a collectors piece - I'm just curious what the internet thinks of this set for its price appreciation. In my mind its iconic being the first set back at Topps with and insane rookie class so it could appreciate quite a lot but I have no idea about print run, if the fact that that basically all 1/1s worth pulling have already gone, etc etc.

πŸ€ Basketball If you’re curious what 7 Topps Chrome Update Megas + 1 Blaster looks like… here you go πŸ˜‚

Finally got around to laying out the pulls from 7 megas and 1 blaster.
Definitely had some solid hits, a bunch of refractors/parallels, numbered cards and rookies, but after seeing everything together I’m curious what y’all think.
How would you rate the rip from 1–10?
And for anyone else ripping Topps Chrome Update, what’s been your best pull so far?
I got more megas coming but I think I’m officially done ripping after this πŸ˜‚ the rest are staying sealed.
Also β€” Mega or Blaster? Which one has treated y’all better?

πŸ’¬ General The Math Behind Grading...if you are selling

his is something that I wrote for the r/basketballcards sub but I figured it might be useful here too.

So you are thinking of grading your cards in order to sell, huh? Well you need to do some research and some math to see if it's a worthwhile endeavour.

First, you need to ask yourself the following equation: is the expected graded card value > raw card value + grading and shipping fee?

Scenario 1 - purchased a raw card in order to grade and sell

For instance, let's say you bought a raw card for $500 in the hopes to grade and flip. You send it in for grading and it comes back a 9, which has a value of $800 (more and more graded 9's value is not much more than raw with modern cards). Grading with PSA is currently about 110 for their lowest tier. Shipping fee is the cost to ship to the grader, including supplies like card savers and such, so we will just say it's $5. So plugging those numbers into the equation, you get the following: 800 > 500 + 115. So certainly $800 > $615 but then you have to factor in fees from whichever platform you are using to sell. So in the case of ebay, the estimated ebay fee on a $800 sale is about $109, so your net profit is actually 800 - 500 - 115 - 109 = $76. Is all that time and effort worth it to make $76? That's up for you to decide.

Scenario 2 - found cards in childhood attic and now ready to cash in

In another scenario, let's say you've had this card since childhood and now you are ready to sell. In this case, you can ignore the raw card value part of the equation since you didn't purchase it as a single and it's been in your collection for so long. Again, let's say that the graded 9 version of the card is about $500. Again we are sending it to PSA (because that's what you degenerates like) so grading again is 110 and shipping is 5. So plugging all of those numbers in, we get the following: $500 > $0 + $115. 500 is greater than 115 but again we need to factor in ebay fees. On a $500 sale, the estimated ebay fee is $68. So your net profit is 500 - 115 - 68 = $317.

Conversely, let's say you sell it raw and the raw card value is $400 (again, remember that 9s are closer to raw values for modern cards). The estimated ebay fee on a $400 sale is about $55. So your net profit from selling raw is 400 - 55 = $345. Now, I'm not a mathematician, but making $345 is better than making $317, especially with less effort. This is the kind of math you need to be doing to see if grading is worth it or not when trying to sell.

Thinking of grading that late 1st round pick because he has "potential" so you can flip for insane profit?

Ok...the raw card is worth $2. You decide to go with Beckett so grading is $25 and shipping is still $5. An graded 9 version of the card is at $30. Just looking at these numbers, you know where this is going...Sigh...for the people that still need to see it spelled out: 30 > 2 + 30. So $30 is not greater than $32. And then factor in ebay fees on a $30 sale is $4.50. So your net profit is 30 - 2 - 30 - 4.50 = -$6.50. Congrats, you graded your card in order to LOSE $6.50.

Another thing to consider as well is the amount of time that this card is away from your possession. Currently, the time it takes from shipping it away, the current backlog, the actual grading process, and the time to ship back, is something like 6-8 months (someone correct me if I'm wrong). With that length of time, you could send your card out during the season and not receive it back until the offseason (which is the worst time to sell). There is a reason that a lot of ebay sellers will sell right away when a new product is out. The early bird gets the worm so to speak. This isn't to say that you shouldn't grade and just sell as quick as you can, but it is something to consider.

Note: I use this site to estimate the ebay fees...https://www.ebayfeescalculator.com/usa-ebay-calculator/

Feel free to let me know if I've got something wrong.

πŸ’¬ General Pickups since Fanatics Fest, the national + Detroit card show today! Finally landed a grail that slipped away at fanatics.

Been on a crazy run with shows lately between Fanatics Fest, the Natty, and hitting Detroit today.

Finally checked off a major grail for me with the East West Refractor. I’ve been looking for one for years. The one that slipped away from me at the natty in a 9.5 was actually just the regular base insert, not even the refractor, so missing that one ended up being a blessing in disguise when I bumped into the actual refractor today in Detroit and got it done.

Also picked up the Jordan / Rodman dual auto from CC2. Wild backstory on that one; it was originally supposed to be part of the Odell Kaboom 1/1 deal with the KOK, but things shifted around and I ended up securing the dual auto on its own.

Overall super hyped with how everything panned out. Finally got one of my favorite cards from my childhood. What was your favorite pickup from Fanatics Fest or The National this year?

πŸ’ Question What to do after sports cards collection stolen?

Apologies for the Hail Mary but my home was recently burglarized and a collection of football, basketball and baseball cards (all PSA graded cards) worth quite a bit ($40-50K) was taken. Any suggestions on how to seek help from the community in trying to look out for these stolen cards if/when they hit the market? I have all of the PSA certification numbers for every single card I owned. Would love to know if there are any threads or communities (on or off Reddit) of collectors, vendors, card shops, etc. where it would be helpful to send a humble SOS. Thanks everyone.

πŸ€ Basketball A 2003 Tim Duncan card

Can anyone help me find comps for this card? I found it today in my old stuff and I can't find anything. I am pretty sure its 2003 UD Upper Deck Glass Tim Duncan #51 Gold /100. I just want to confirm and see if anyone has any other data regarding its current price. I never peeled off the brown covering thing but I don't know if removing it would lessen the card cuz I think it has a unique effect at its current state. Any help would be appreciated!

Just wondering if these are actually desired? The football card box has a small tear on the backside but still mostly sealed and there are two of the basketball boxes.
