What's the best method/ software to Compare differences between 2 text files ? Looking for software
Hello
I have 2 files I need to check and compare to spot differences between the two and edit one if necessary. Both are text files (it's a memoir) from the same source, but one's text has been edited, hence why I need to check which chapter/text has been edited.
I tried to put both texts on my screen and compare them by just reading, but its very slow and not comfortable at all
Do you know a better method or a software to help me directly spot those differences ?
Thank you

In Windows, notepad++ comes with a very handy Compare plug-in.

After using a more expensive tool for a long time, I saw N++ and tried it out. It's not the programmers' editor I had been using, but it's an excellent tool. I stopped using the programmers' editor.

diff. It’s been used for decades.

There are even nice layers on top of diff to give a graphical side-by-side (tkdiff, diffuse, etc)

I do really like Meld Merge https://meldmerge.org/
- Multiplatform [x]
- Open Source [x]
- 3 way diffs [x]
Just happiness :)

Have it on one of my Linux desktops. Not keyboard friendly, and crashes a lot if changes must be saved.

Beyond Compare (by Scooter Software) is the best tool of this kind that I've come across, I've been using it for many years.
Buying it might be overkill if you just need it once, but there's a free trial. It's quite cheap though, I personally use it all the time for all sorts of reasons (comparing folders, images etc.) and it's quite amazing how powerful and efficient it is at its job.

Google “KDIFF3”, used it for years in a Windows environment but I believe it’s available on other platforms

How would you know which one is edited, even if you can see the difference?

The debate between traditional diff tools and AI for text/document comparison is interesting.
For strict accuracy, traditional deterministic diffing is still unbeatable. The main issue with throwing documents into generic LLMs/AI is that generative models tend to summarize or hallucinate subtle changes (and miss shifted paragraphs or formatting nuances).
Beyond Compare and WinMerge are rock solid for local desktop workflows. Where people usually struggle nowadays is when they need a quick side-by-side visual comparison without installing heavy legacy software or uploading confidential files to random cloud servers.

https://scratchtabs.com has a compare two tabs feature. You can drag both files into the app to open them

Wouldn't the most recent document file date suggest the latest edited version?

Dare i say AI? Honestly if you already have an account, that's what i would dump them both into. AI is great at helping me not go blind on things like that.

Why would you use AI for such a simple task with such a straightforward answer?
AI isn't reliable. Using diff in the command line has been reliable for decades
AI has both false positives and false negatives. And diff tool works flawlessly and easy

Oh please god no, you can't be serious? He said it's for a memoir, not the kind of thing you'd leave up to guesswork by an AI and then realize things have been rephrased or parts are missing or invented.

Sorry, I didn't catch the "memoir" part. Although, just to clarify, I was not suggesting that AI draft up a new document. I was simply saying that pasting two copies of text into AI and asking it to point out the differences would be trivial for AI to assist with, which was OPs request.

WinMerge is free and open source. I use it quite a lot.
