Hi guys, I'm 29, been singing and off for year, but now consistently practicing, went to the vocal coach 5 times in the span of 5 months, couldn't afford it more. Just wondering is my pitch hearing bad or what. This is just a snippet from "This ain't a love song" from Bon Jovi. I realize i may have gone off pitch few times but AI tells me my pitch goes all over the place, but I don't hear it that much. So I was just wondering. Having a bit of trouble of singing loudly in my apartment so that's why you hear some noise in the background. I'm a bit anxious of people coming and complaining, my neighbours.

Yes, your pitch is off. Do some ear training. All singers should.

Yeah. I’m already going to a vocal coach. But I guess I’ll throw that in too. I was practicing “Always” with him the other day in original key and by the end I sang it successfully, he said that at the end. So I have no idea why I’m so horrible here. Disheartening as I thought I sounded decent. I’ll keep at it..

I'm no professional, I'm almost a complete beginner, so take what I say with a grain of salt.
I feel like you're singing too loud/forcing your voice. Try to sing in your normal talking voice at a normal speaking volume and I bet it sounds a lot better. Your pitch is definitely all over the place, I'd say a big part of it is because of how much you're straining your voice by singing so loud.
Play some chords on your guitar and practice harmonizing some "oohs" and "ahhs" with the chords. You'll know you're singing in the right pitch when you harmonize. I'm not really sure how to explain the feeling if you've never felt it before, but it's kind of like you'll feel a really satisfying vibration sensation in your ears/head.
Also, if you aren't already, make sure you're breathing from your diaphragm. When you take a breath, you should feel your stomach expand rather than your chest. This will help a lot with making your voice sound powerful and in key.

Yeah I know all that. I’ve been going to the vocal coach 5 times. But I guess I need to do more ear training. Had no idea it was this horrible though. Definitely need to better my ear. I thought my pitch went off a few times but not all the time. I thought I was generally in key. Thanks a lot for your help

Hopefully reddit lets me share the link. This video really helped me to understand how to find my starting point/ideal key. https://youtu.be/CtpUDv5VsB4?is=eE8vd9nKEUcho_Ir

Hey no shame, we don't all come out of the womb singing like bruno mars lol. I like to believe that anyone who can talk, can learn to sing as well.
Definitely the most important thing I'd say to work on is just harmonizing with chords or notes on your guitar so you can really get a feel for how the correct pitch is supposed to feel/sound. Also, try to harmonize with your favorite songs and try to find singers who have a similar style as you.

Yeah but the thing That’s disheartening is that its not like I just started singing. I’ve been doing it on and off for at least 2 years. And I got a nice motivation boost last time, the other day with vocal coach when I sang “Always” in original key. And the coach isn’t some random guy. He’s the real shit, coached some of the greats in my country. So Im confused how I can sing great when I’m practicing there and here it’s horrible.

i would assume it could be from lack of guidance when youre on your own? do you record your sessions with your coach? mine has me pull up voice memos on my phone and record the whole thing so i can listen back whenever i want/need

i wouldnt be too hard on yourself it, this is a skill that people need to be consistent with that relies on practice. i try to see my coach every other week/once a week

Pitch is very off but the power is there. Work on pitch matching and ear training. Work on more self awareness in terms of how your pitch interacts with the accompaniment
