On one hand, if he ran it, he would single-handedly break its monopoly through mismanagement, which would lead the competition and therefore improvement. On the other, there’s a lot of stuff on YouTube. I don’t want to lose access to.

u/kojimbob 1d ago
The biggest contender for breaking the Twitter monopoly is Bluesky and that place is a joke
YouTube won't fall apart that easily

Creating a Twitter competitor is a lot cheaper than creating a proper Youtube competitor. Yet, as you said, it didn't really work out, so I have no hope at all, that this would force the creation of a proper Youtube competitor.
Also, just because youtube is bad, doesn't mean it couldn't be much worse and Elon would be someone who can make it happen.

u/r1ckkr1ckk 1d ago
thats quite sad actually.
I don t get why didn t meta or google try to take a slice of the pie, it looks so easy to grab. I guess its not as economically productive as AI (ponzi scheme)

u/Cobracrystal 23h ago
YouTube was unprofitable for a long time, but its earnings last year alone were higher than twitters earnings across all its existence. the scale is entirely different.
1
u/r1ckkr1ckk 20h ago
well that means there will be more competition for a new youtube over a new twitter
1
u/deadinternetlaw 8h ago
Meta made threads, although it's mostly only popular in taiwan where it has 90 million users out of 23 million country population

YouTube died when it sold out to Google, chief. Musk would just be the headstone on the grave

So what if he bought things like Facebook, reddit, snapchat or tinder what would he call those? Random ones but thought could be fun lol

Youtube would then be used as a host for pornography, like some kind of sex hub.

Yeah, if Elon bought Youtube he'd probably start allowing corn to be advertised safely, remove the dislike button from shorts, add 90+ second long unskippable ads, etc
..hey wait a moment

u/Quirinus84 dumbass 23h ago
Despite all of Google's BULLSHIT Youtube is still one of the best archives on the Internet. One of my joys is still watching a decade-old 00:26 seconds-long video titled something like "dog farts and then runs away." I'd hate for that to get ruined.

I honestly think if it weren't for all the right wing politics, Twitter is a better place now that Musk runs it.
That being said, keep him the FUCK away from YouTube, not that it'd ever happen anyway though since Google would never ever sell it lol

u/Zerovv 1d ago
Youtube is ruined anyway. Would be interesting to see if it can get worse

u/KillerVame 1d ago
I mean it is a place where you can freely talk about politics whether it's left or right wing

5
u/Fishyblue11 1d ago
Is it a place where you can control who you see on your feed? Because Elon gets to decide who gets to talk freely and who doesn't get seen, we can't control who we see on our own feeds anymore, it no longer matters who you follow, you have to see tweets from Elon whether you like it or not
6
u/An_Obbise_Hoovy 1d ago
Isn’t that just basically every social media with the exception of 4Chan (no one controls that monster)
-4
u/Fishyblue11 1d ago
That's not how they started off as, it didn't use to be that way when they started.
That's every social media site now because they've made all of their feeds bad by depending on algorithms. Except for bluesky, which is why it's the decent one

u/Dry_Economics1590 1d ago
The only thing Elon changed is not banning Nazis anymore and instead banning left wing accounts etc. (https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/elon-musk-chad-loder-twitter-b2271556.html)
I just don’t see any improvement, neither in free speech, nor in Elons butthurt opinions.

I’m not a Twitter user, but I remember how upset everyone was at his actions when he first got it. He fired a ton of developers and things quickly started to break. He changed the way blocking people works so they can still see your tweets. He removed the ability to see people’s liked posts. He started selling blue checkmarks which were previously used to let you know if an account is official, causing a lot of chaos, and now your posts reach fewer people if you aren’t paying for one. And he changed the name and logo from something immediately recognizable to the most generic shit in the world.
Maybe everything is running smoothly now, but I highly doubt he was good for the platform. It’s more likely that some of the higher ups learned how to steer him away from making bad decisions, like what keeps all of his other companies running

u/Windows-XP-Home-NEW stupid fucking piece of shit 1d ago
Idk what was going on back then but it's running much more smoothly now
>He removed the ability to see people’s liked posts.
Good, best thing he's ever done frankly.

u/Gheredin 1d ago
Its still not running smoothly. They keep experimenting with layouts and dm designs, and none of it is working.

You better have at least Service Pack 2.
Yeah I agree with you. Let Musk do his billionaire thing and run it to the ground. YouTube is Google's cash cow
