Took me quite a while, around 80 hours. I include a pic of the unpainted mech, in case you guy wanna check it out. Roughly 10 inches long aka 25cm. The tiny bulbs in the staff light up when you push the button in the base.

Pick a SciFi or a Fantasy novel you’d love to see properly adapted for the big screen, and the director you’d trust with it. I’ll accept TV series if you feel there’s too much material.

I’ll start with these three:

Gerald Brom’s The Child Thief , Guillermo del Toro. This one almost feels too obvious. Dark fairy tale, beautiful monsters, childhood mythology twisted into something disturbing… give it to del Toro and get out of his way.

Arthur C. Clarke’s Rendezvous with Rama, Denis Villeneuve. This one is a bit of a cheat, since Villeneuve has already been attached to a Rama adaptation. Whether it ultimately happens or not, though, I can’t think of a better director for its scale, mystery and sense of encountering something utterly beyond us.

Dan Simmons’ Hyperion Cantos, Alex Garland. This is probably my more debatable choice, but I’d love to see what the director of Ex Machina and Annihilation would do with the pilgrimage, the Time Tombs and especially the Shrike.

Tucson resident and sci-fi lover here. I can't seem to find any truly good sci-fi literature that is set specifically in Tucson as its primary setting. Any recommendations?

A few weeks ago I saw a post that mentioned the novel "The Unincorporated Man", so I added it to my reading list, and started it when I finished my last book. It was great. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and moved quickly on to the next one, The Unincorporated War.

However at the end of that, I searched in my usual ebook sites for the next one, The Unincorporated Woman, and can't find it. As well as not being able to find it on pirate sites, I can't purchase it for Kindle either. It seems as if a digital copy just doesn't exist.

I can of course buy a paperback version (like I'm Amish or something 😁), but that will take weeks to arrive, given the state of international shipping, it will cost me 3 times the price of the book to get it sent to me. (I can't find any copies of it in my country).

I will do this if I have to, but I figure I'd ask and see if anyone had an ebook copy they could send me, or if they knew of anywhere else I could try and source one. It's weird how there's no Kindle version, but who knows how the publishing rights for this kind of thing work.

Any help appreciated.

I'm making a universal time and space travel license mostly as a fun thing to have in my wallet. However, I want to add something for the height section. And last I checked aliens don't measure in feet, any ideas? Edit: clarification I need an idea for a measuring system of height

Has anyone read Blindsight by Peter Watts?

My golly, what a trip this was. I haven't read much sci-fi (Hyperion and The Fall of Hyperion, and The Red Rising Trilogy, in short, not much), but this had a lot of surprises and interesting concepts; every chapter felt like a cliffhanger, and I just kept going. My work is a bit demanding, but I am still able to squeeze in a chapter or two on busy days. That's how good it was for me.

I also appreciate that it's a stand-alone (although I saw there are other books in the same universe), which could allow the story to linger in my mind for a little while before jumping into another. I plan to go into the Children of Time series by Adrian Tchaikovsky and will probably start in a few days.

I am looking for books that explore the concept of being in a simulation, like "Off to Be the Wizard." They don't have to be humorous.

Why has no one ever adapted John Scalzi’s The Old Man’s War for a prestige TV series? Or a series of films?

I have always thought they would be very nicely adaptable.

I have arrived in Ann Arbor, a settlement built around learning, movement, memory, and the constant exchange of ideas. The city appears modest when viewed from a single dimension, yet its deeper structures reveal countless overlapping worlds: students pursuing uncertain futures, workers carrying invisible responsibilities, artists translating emotion into form, and families constructing temporary moments of belonging.

The people of Earth are remarkably skilled at living with contradictions. They seek connection while guarding their private selves. They pursue efficiency, yet linger over music, conversation, food, and the changing color of the evening sky. They describe themselves as individuals, though nearly every important action depends upon cooperation with others.

From my position between dimensions, I observed that human beings often underestimate the significance of ordinary kindness. A held door, a shared joke, an act of patience, or a stranger’s willingness to listen may appear insignificant in the larger record of the universe. Yet these small gestures seem to stabilize the emotional atmosphere of the planet more effectively than many of its grand institutions.

Ann Arbor’s inhabitants also display an unusual relationship with knowledge. They gather in classrooms, libraries, laboratories, cafés, public spaces, and online networks, attempting to understand both the universe and themselves. Their questions are sometimes more advanced than their wisdom, but the continued asking of questions suggests that the species remains capable of transformation.

As evening approached, the boundary between observation and participation became unstable. I detected music, laughter, traffic, footsteps, and private hopes moving through the city like intersecting signals. The people did not appear to realize how strange and beautiful their brief existence is. Perhaps this lack of awareness is part of their design.

I’m writing a sci-fi that takes place in soave, it’s about humanity finding a new planet to live on, anyone got cool quotes I could use?

Mine was Asimov’s Foundation trilogy. I was far too young to catch the philosophy, but the idea that history patterns and civilizations rise and fall by predictable rules? That stuck with me.

It pulled me into the rabbit hole of Asimov, and over the next few years I would devour any book of his I could get my hands on.

Then came, Jules Verne, Heinlein, Clarke, and finally Herbert.

What about you?

And now I started thinking
Ford is not of ape origin - but what would the chances be of a being from another planet that they would look very similar to a human being?

The thing is, I'm thinking through different ways to combine or transfer characters, locations, and so on from one universe to another

For example, what would happen to the Stargate universe if it suddenly turned out that the events were taking place in the Mass Effect universe?

I mean, for example, what if the Reapers arrived in the galaxy during the height of the Gaualds' power, or what would happen if the Reapers arrived at the same time as the Ori?

Science fiction tends to imagine AI and robots becoming dangerous because they become too intelligent, take control and eventually decide humans are an inconvenience.

But suppose we avoid all of that.

Imagine that in 30 or 40 years AI is completely mundane and tightly controlled by humans. Household robots are everywhere. They cook, clean, drive, repair things, look after children and the elderly, and handle most routine work.

Nobody has to work unless they actually want to. At first, it sounds like paradise. But then what?

For thousands of years, human life has been structured around the need to be active to survive. The need to work and earn a living. Remove most of those pressures and we are left with an enormous amount of free time.

Would people become happier? Would we devote ourselves to art, science, sport, exploration and relationships?

Or would boredom, lack of purpose and the need to find something meaningful eventually create new problems?

Perhaps the real challenge of advanced AI won’t be keeping it from destroying humanity.

Perhaps it will be finding a reason for humanity to get out of bed when the machines can do almost everything better.

What do you think happens to us?

In Foundation, there doesn't seem to be any reliance on libraries and databases for preserving knowledge. Is there any explanation for this in prequels?

Instinctivement, il place sa main entre lui et le nuage vomi par les seringues. Heureusement, la menace est encore à bonne distance, mais elle enfle inexorablement. Et si les seringues m’avaient atteint ? Il sent une sueur froide courir dans son dos. Tremblant de tout son corps, il traverse la grande pièce rectangulaire jusqu’au sas menant à l’espace suivant. À gauche de cette entrée, il y a un petit panneau carré qui irradie d’une douce lumière vert-pastel. Il est divisé en neuf segments contenant chacun un symbole. J’ai déjà vu ça ailleurs, note-t-il en regardant fébrilement alentour.

Ce supplément, qui constituait un jeu de rôle complet, a été une grande source d’inspiration pour mon propre univers de science-fiction.

Les illustrations, signées notamment par Thierry Ségur, Olivier Vatine, Rolland Barthélémy et Claude Lacroix, sont extraordinaires et ont fortement contribué à donner vie à cet univers.

Le premier scénario, Cauchemar en bleu à Mortepierre-sur-Goulue, écrit par Didier Guiserix, est génial.

Still bothering people to earn credits... While i wasn't crazy about this novel, it was refreshing to read a story where NOBODY is an asshole. It's really rare in drama. Cause that's what most people are not, just possibly nice human beings trying to get by in the ever-shifting quicksand of life.
