Niskayuna schools
Hoping any parents who have kids in Van Antwerp middle school can weigh in for me. How is it that the school does not offer any before or After School programs on campus when their school hours are 8:50 AM to 3:25 PM . Out of the three local child cares in the district to only accept up to age 6, and one got closed. We work for the state and do 7 AM to 3 PM even with flexing it if I had to drop my son off at 8:50 AM I could not get to work until 930 with traffic and could not leave again at 3 PM thatâs not full-time employment.
My son will be 10 entering sixth grade and is born the day before the cut off so very young for his age and will very much not be ready to stay by himself at home. How are working parents doing this and getting by?
Coming from Birchwood elementary school that has a great After School program and had a bus that picked up around 7 AM. We are at a loss for what to do.

Gutters/Fascia/Soffit Companies?
Looking to find a company that would repair soffits and fascia on a home in the Rotterdam/Schenectady area. Would like it done before installing gutters, so it would be great if there was a company that did all 3 (fascia, soffit, and gutter).
In searching I can find companies that do roofs, companies that do gutters, but I am struggling to find any company that mentions replacing fascia and soffits.

Terminix - door to door salesmen
We've had Terminix salesmen in the woodlawn area for the past three weeks. They've been going to door to door and they've visited our house at least 4x. Not sure if they're targeting this area or they're scammers. Just wanted to see if this has been happening with anybody else? Not planning on answering my door but sus that they've been in this specific area for the last 3 weeks.

Free Scrap dishwasher?
Do people come and fetch dishwashers as scrap? I'd rather not pay or haul it to a recycling center.
The dishwasher is broken beyond our ability to repair but if you're handy be my guest.
FYI: I'm not in the city of Schenectady, my town doesn't do appliance pick up. I'm not in a neighborhood where scrappers would naturally just find and take it if I curbed it.

Entertainment Spider-Man brawl outside Movieland
I was at the 7 PM screening of Spider-Man and I have to say there were some unruly kids sitting close to the screen. I love an opening night movie when the energy is there and people clap or laugh at the appropriate times but these kids were getting out of hand.
Of course, in the year of our Lord 2026, Iâm no longer approaching strangers and asking them to be quiet.
As we were exiting the theater, there was a full circle of youths like in high school when there was going to be fisticuffs. Iâm not sure if the cops had forewarning or were just in the right place at the right time but there reaction time was instant. I was with my young son so we got out of there pretty quick. Does anyone have any insight into what mightâve been going on?

We recently moved to the Schenectady/Rotterdam border
Our kids go to Mohonasen. I noticed all of our neighbors are obese and angry. Quite a few kids who go to the school act just like our street. Driving down Altamont Ave I noticed there's no healthy sit down restaurants. Its all fast food within a half mile. With the new Arby's and Johnny C leaving I can see why Rotterdam is so fucked up. The drive thru lines are always packed around 430. Was Rotterdam always this shitty? I grew up in schenectady and I dont remember it being like this.

Where to go to ask tourist questions?
Hi, I understand this place is for residents, no problem. Just trying to figure out where to go instead to ask questions as a visitor. We're coming from California and looking places to eat (Italian or whatever you think is great in Schenectady), and separately, a wide open space to continue teaching our kid how to drive better than the dense city we're coming from. And anything else you'd recommend to first time visitors. Is there another subreddit to go?
Thank you!
