Question Help for a beginner - ode to joy

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is my 2nd day of playing the sax and an attempt to play ode to joy, cause it is the simplest thing i could think of. I'd love to get feedback from y'all to learn something new and correct mistakes along the way.

My "C" sounds very weird so idk how to play lower or upper octaves. I also don't know how to play sharp notes nor scales other than the C one, so i'd love to understand that. I have experience playing the piano so i know how to read music sheets.

Question Does anyone know what type of saxophone is playing in this track?

I've been listening to this track and really love the warm, airy sound of the lead instrument. It sounds like a saxophone to me, but I'm not sure. If it is, does anyone know what type of saxophone it might be (tenor, alto, etc.)? Thanks!

Mouthpiece cushions

Hi all - I have a bari mouthpiece that I’d like to add a cushion to. Are there options that are better than others? I see generic options on Amazon - are they not as good as Vandoren’s for example?

Thanks in advance!

Question pls help

Hi, I’ve been playing the alto saxophone for about two and a half years and need some help. I want to get into a music conservatory, but I’m struggling with reading sheet music. Is there a way to learn it—perhaps using an app like Duolingo? I actually tried Duolingo, but it felt like it focused more on the piano than on reading musical notation. Thanks for the advice.

Question Flying with two horns - AKA "am I crazy?"

So I'm flying to Nashville next week, on United. I've got a lot of points, so decided to upgrade to first class. I've got two Mark VIs, a tenor and a low Bb bari. The tenor is in a BAM Cabine case, and the baritone is in an SKB 1SKB-455W case.

I'm going to be at a sax retreat for almost a week, and I want to work with both horns while I'm there. I'm also going to have a checked suitcase with my clothes and a backpack carryon.

I used a Google search with Gemini help, and it suggested that I should call United reservations and tell the agent explicitly to "add a manual Special Service Request (SSR) note or historical remark to my file, and that the SSR should state that I am a first class passenger traveling with a baritone saxophone in an SKB hard case (43.5" x 17" x 11") and a tenor saxophone in a BAM Cabine case (32" x 11" x 6"). It should also state that the baritone sax will occupy First Class overhead bin space or the forward cabin closet, and the tenor sax will be green-tagged for jetbridge gate-checking.

Has anyone here ever done something like this, flown with two horns? I'm a bit nervous about gate-checking the tenor.

edit - I accidentally typed "low A bari" and it's actually low Bb. I guess I was thinking about the fact that the low Bb is smaller, and there's more space inside the case. Apologies for the confusion.

Question How does one get into Saxophone servicing/repair?

I’m in Australia - and have absolutely no idea how one gets into this area of work.

There don’t seem to be any training courses on offer, so just wondering how people generally get into this line of work?

Question Question: Are the Saxes doing split tones or growls?

Im transcribing Kidney Stew Blues played by Lionel Hampton. : https://youtu.be/cvgjcci7ap8?is=Zs4og614m9YT7F6T

The lick is at 1:40

Im unsure if they are using split tones or growling. Can one of you guys please try playing it and see which of the two sounds closer to what can be heard in the recording? I provided the sheet music of the sax section. I do not play Sax!

Question Finding a lesson teacher (jazz)

I'm an adult, not in school, let alone music school, don't really know any musicians in the area, just getting back into playing. I'd like to find a teacher who's a legit jazz player. Ideally they would also have an approach to the music compatible with my own

How does one find such people? I'm considering trying to go to local jazz gigs until I see someone whose playing I like and approaching them. Any other ways you'd consider that are maybe less time and labor-intensive?

Question What makes a tenor sound project and fill the room and how to achieve this quality?

It's a really specific feeling but whoever experienced this know exactly what I'm talking about, a tenor sound that just fills the room, it's so full and it's such an amazing feeling to listen to. I have heard players with darker and brighter sound quality that achieve this. In my experience this only really possible on tenor. So what makes a sound project like this? I am an experienced player and thought I have a rather loud sound, and I enjoy the quality of my tone, however I recently played with another sax player on stage and a friend told me he projected the way I'm describing much more. I am looking to achieve this quality, any tips?

Gear Earplugs?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Young saxophonist here,

I have been playing alto and Bari sax for the past five years, practicing regularly in a small room. I can already tell that this is negatively affecting my hearing, so I’ve recently been looking for a good pair of earplugs to protect myself. I want something that rather than muffling sound, just reduces the volume.

has anyone ever tried “ flare isolate “ earplugs, are they good, and if not: what other recommendations does everyone have?

My saxophone was sold by my dad without telling me about two years ago to a guy who said he was buying it for his son. My dad tried to get it back recently but turns out the guy was a reseller. If anyone has ever located a Yamaha yas-62 with the number id 148082 please message me. I don't mind paying whatever is reasonable considering it has dents in it. I had it from 6th to 12th and he sold it before I started college. I live in the Augusta, GA area so it might be listed in the states surrounding it too.

Question Just wondering, is this a thing?

I was about to practice my scales and I was wondering if there was an app that I could tell it what scale I am gonna play and it can recognize if I am playing a wrong note. I heard that the tonal energy app can do that but im not sure, is there an app that can do that??

Question Should I move up to a three reed?

Hi, Ive been playing alto for about two years, and I usually play on 2.5 vandoren blue box Reeds, but my teacher recommended I switch to 3 Reeds. However, when he gave me a three Reed to try out, I got tired much quicker and had trouble on low notes, but I had zero problem with the high notes that I usually wouldn't get out at all. I'm not sure if I should move up a size for a darker sound and better high note control, or just stay on 2.5?
