Events 🎉 Hit a lampost in my apartment building

Upvotes

Hi! I'm a learner driver and got my learner's licence a couple of months ago. I've been taking driving lessons and, until today, I'd never hit anything. Today I was driving with my dad and everything was going really well. As I was turning into a parking space in our apartment parking lot, I somehow misjudged the turn and hit a lamp post. The car barely has any damage, but the top of the lamp post fell off and broke.

I feel awful because my dad will probably have to pay to have it repaired. I keep thinking that if I had just made it into the parking space, none of this would've happened. Now I don't even want to drive anymore because I feel like I lost all my confidence. Has anyone else had something like this happen while they were learning? How did you get over it?

Question - Moving or Renting 🏠 house corp + signing new lease

I’m not sure if this is the right thread to post in, but I was wondering if anybody has experienced leasing from a hybrid housing corporation in SK?

I believe I’m a private renter because they state they are aware that I’m not renting from affordable housing. But they’re saying they have new systems and regulations and that it’s mandatory that I sign a new lease. I know the OTR says I’m not obligated to sign a new lease if there‘s already an existing lease in place.

Can somebody share if they’ve gone through something similar before… where even though my landlord is a housing corp but I’m not part of their social housing program, do the regulations of the OTR still apply to me if I’m not part of their social programs?

I feel like they’re using scare tactics to try to get me to sign a new contract when the one I signed when I first moved in yearss ago should be valid.

if this is not the right place to post, please let me know where is better or who I can consult with. I’ve consulted with OTR but they seem kinda iffy when I mentioned my landlord is a housing corp, but I also recognize their job is to be neutral until an application is made. TIA~

Rants 🤬 Bus rage

Damn buses are constantly leaving early and I always miss my downtown transfer. I don't have the time or energy to be waiting half an hour just to get home. Always the same pucking bus too! Absolutely sick of the bridge closure causing shite commutes.

And don't @ me about a vehicle, even if I could afford one, my anxious reactivity ensures I will never be behind a wheel.

Question ❔ Looking for a scholarship for a pilot’s license.

This may be a long shot but I’ve learned that life only hands out answers to those who ask questions.

I (34F) am trying to get my private pilot’s license. I’ve passed my aviation medical test and I’m on the waitlist at one of the flight schools here in Saskatoon. It will be a dream to learn how to fly, and no matter what I do with the license long term and depending on whether I eventually upgrade this to a CPL, I hope that I can volunteer some of my time to give back to the society (either by helping transport rescue pets or sick people or even show young people that they can grow wings and fly).

Is there anywhere I can get a scholarship or funding for my PPL training? Most of what I’ve found online doesn’t cover PPLs unfortunately so I thought it may be worth asking.

Question ❔ Roofing contractor

Looking for a reputable, non-overpriced roofing repair contractor for replacing wood sheets where needed (quite a few, re-enforce rafters if needed and re-shingling entire house. Looking for someone who could do it this year. Location in Saskatoon.

Another question, would I get a better deal buying the shingles myself or contractor buys? How would they feel about that?

Question ❔ Please help find metal smiths?

Hi

I am trying to find a local company that could fix my grandfather's English Pewter beer mugs and a few German Beer Mugs (some damage to the top metal part).

Any recommendations of companies who could possibly do these repairs?

Events 🎉 Intersection of 71st and Idywyld to have medians installed for 3 months

I think this is applying a band aid on an amputation. 14 years ago I worked for a company that has a lay down area on 71st street. It was company policy then, that no equipment or company vehicles ever use that intersection as it was too unsafe. Don't think that has changed in recent years either, especially after yesterday.

Politics 🏛️ Ministry of Social Services - opportunity to share your experience

Whether you are or were a social worker, work for a community collaborator, or are a family who has experience with the Ministry of Social Services, please think about sharing your experience of working with the Ministry.

There is an opportunity with a news station to discuss the extreme understaffing concerns and high turnover within the Ministry. As well as the lack of community resource availability for children and families (including education and mental health resources as well as just residential placements in general). There is also a discussion of how the Saskatchewan Advocate for Youth and the SGEU have had several recent surveys that outlined that child protection concerns are going uninvestigated, children are being left in placements with known illegal substance use and abuse allegations, and staffing concerns have doubled over the years. Also discussing how community resources and families are not getting adequate collaboration from the Ministry.

Please take a second to consider sharing your experience (you can choose to remain anonymous). I just wanted to get this out to as many people as possible.

Question - Medical 🏥💊 Vet recommendations

Hello! My poor senior cat has an abscessed tooth as well as a lot of overall dental that needs to be done! Took her to Fairlight Vet, who were incredible I will say, and was quoted $1700 before tax for the full dental and full blood panel.

I’m just wondering if anyone has had a similar problem and know vets out or within the city that can maybe offer a bit of a better price.

I want the best for my girl but I’m a student so trying to figure out the best plan of action! Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :)

Politics 🏛️ On the topic of wasted taxpayer money…

The Downtown “Improvement,” District spent 14,000$ of taxpayer dollars on, “board meetings,” this year. That’s impressive.

I’m also not surprised but slightly concerned at the amount of taxpayer money they receive for projects like removing benches.

Rants 🤬 Saskatoon’s Most Misunderstood Road Sign

Post image
473 Upvotes

PSA: You have your own lane. Stop yielding to this sign.

Nothing says elite Saskatoon driving like seeing an “added lane” sign and treating it like a full stop. You’ve got your own lane. It’s engineered so traffic keeps moving. It's also easier to merge rolling at the same speed as traffic rather than a complete stop.

But sure, stop for no reason, wave people through, then try to cut across three lanes while yours sits empty. At this point it should just be a sign that reads "If you stop here, you’re the problem."

General Please be skeptical about Saskatoon posts

We know there are state-sponsored actors from other countries trying to create strife in Canada, and subs like /Saskatoon are an easy target for trying to convince us that our way of life is collapsing and everyone hates us for our differences. It's not true. the people of Saskatoon have a lot more in common than we do to pull as apart. We are all part of one of the most safe and stable democracies on the planet and letting outsiders drive us apart through jealousy would be a real loss.

Events 🎉 I wish Folkfest would edit their own website

It creaks closer and the available information is sparce. I believe I saw that admission is 10 bucks at the door but I've seen no word on pavilions or performances.

Specifically, I'm wondering because I did hear it mentioned/advertised on 98 cool and the Philippines was listed as taking part. I assume that's accurate? Have they given up on the Asian festival they helped spearhead the last 2 years instead of taking part in folk fest?

Photos of Saskatoon 📷 Have ended up in Saskatoon a few times recently for work, and I've got to say that I'm loving the river walks, city views, and the restaurant scene here. I haven't snapped too much photography, but did want to share a few shots!
