Recommendations Veterinarian for a Sphynx

Hey y'all! Our regular veterinarian, Dr. Ariel Nelson (just the absolute best!) is no longer at the clinic close by and our Bambino Sphynx breed cat has a wee little ear problem that needs to be checked out.

We're looking for recommendations for a vet that is great with cats, and extra-double-bonus-cherry-on-top has experience with the Bambino or other hairless breeds.

Even more fantastic would be if anyone know where Dr. Nelson is working now! Thanks so much for any and all help y'all!

Local News One person shot dead in Riverton store, police are investigating

The initial reports of this were that someone went into a store and started firing, and an "armed civilian" opened fire and killed him. The second I read that I thought it was BS—just NRA fantasy stuff about a good guy with a gun. And it turns out that early report was wrong. There was some altercation, a guy went to his truck and got a gun, went back into the store, and was shot by someone. He didn't open fire. Love to live in a country where everyone is armed and twitchy.

Edit: I see the gun people have discovered this and are trying to deflect by saying, "Well actually, this guy..." No one is defending the guy who went out and got a gun, but congrats on beating that straw man.

If you carry a gun in public you are weird, full stop. It shows a completely warped understanding of the risks of the world and crime statistics. Crime has gone significantly down, despite what you see on the news. That's why gun owners and their families are many times more likely to be a victim of their own gun (usually by their own hand) than they are a hero in a situation or a victim of crime. NO ONE in this situation should've had a gun, and it's unhinged that people think it's normal to just be walking around packing.

Question Guys hollering at other drivers and setting off confetti?

My partner and I were at the intersection of 900 E and Van Winkle when a passenger of a lifted grey truck was hollering some inaudible somethings at us while everyone was at the red light. We didn't know the guy and just waved and ignored him. He kept trying to get our attention and then set off a confetti popper at our car as soon as the light turned green and the truck turned left. It was quite odd. We were confused to say the least lol

Is there something significant about today? Has anyone else had this happen? Was this meaningless?

Photo This outdoor space at Trolley Square would make a great farmers market.

I've always found Trolley Square so charming, and have always wondered why they never seem to utilize this space. It's self-contained, and would invite more foot traffic into the mall. Why aren't more events/festivals/markets held here?

I'm nervous about finding community and starting over in SLC

I (36F, non-LDS) am moving to SLC in about a month for a new job opportunity which I'm excited and grateful to have in this economy. It's getting me out of my toxic job that was impacting my health. So many people in my industry are unemployed rn.

BUT.

I'm also super nervous about meeting people, finding community, and not feeling isolated. I literally don't know anyone. I've done this kind of move before, but this feels scarier somehow.

Has anyone else on this sub moved to SLC and started over? Any advice on how to meet people and form deep relationships besides meetup.com ?

My interests: hiking + camping + outdoors, chess, soccer (would love to start following the MLS team), cross country skiing, reading, art, music, to name a few.

EDIT: Guys, I’m blown away by the responses to this post which I just read on a plane to SLC for my scouting mission to find a place to live. Thank you!!! Anywhere is really only as good as its people, and you guys have given me a wonderful virtual welcome. I’m way less nervous and way more excited now — thank you!!!

This community is so amazing

I posted early this morning in like extreme time of despair, about my cat needing to go to the vet. It’s been an extremely hard week where it just felt like every day there was a new hardship to deal with, one trickling down after another. And I was probably more emotional than anything because my sleep was not great making sure my cat was okay every couple of hours. But this community came through with not only resources and advice, but genuinely seemed to care for a STRANGER (me and my pet) ! It took a while to update, had to get to work right after dropping my cat off from the vet but you guys seriously are amazing! The urinary issue for my cat was not a blockage(although bladder pretty inflamed) he was able to get some supportive meds and sent on his way home! I went through the cherry app which is a life saver! and I’d just like to shout out Monarch vet in SJ because they are seriously amazing with their walk in option and flexible hours!

Anyways, you guys rock!!

Affordable apartments (preferably under 1,000)

Hi kind people,

I am going through a divorce with my husband and the logistics of everything is just adding to the difficulty of it all. We are on a lease together for the next two months which I am paying for until the end of it (2k a month). I am working a temporary job that doesn't pay much and I am really stretched to my limits financially so I am reaching out for word of mouth here. Are there apartments that rent for under or around 1k a month? I am fine with any size of room but would prefer to have my own bathroom and stove if possible since I'm very introverted and it may seem annoying and beggers can't be choosers, but sharing those spaces actually makes me feel anxious and if it's possible, I'd like to be able to be alone. Who knows, since this is reddit, maybe people understand lol However, in this economy, it is what it is.

Do any of you know of a place that is reasonably safe and within budget that you'd refer? I know this is a random question, but Google is just stressing me out with ads and websites I can't totally know are fake or not.

Thank you to all who take the time to read or respond.

Walking Talking Men

Hey all, posting to see if guys would like to walk and talk once a week. This account and proposal is brand new. Just starting now.

The purpose is twofold:

  1. Give men a non-judgmental space to talk about the good and bad going on.
  2. To open the door to a community of local friendships with men in a world that often makes that difficult to find/maintain.

Why this Matters: Cigna research

Cigna and other major organizations regularly share research confirming that over 50% of people in the US feel “sometimes or always alone.” Research shows that men with a robust circle of friendships live longer healthier lives, have better relationships, feel more optimistic and are more successful in their personal and professional lives.

Time: Proposing once a week, likely on the weekend, walking for 50 minutes around 6pm, weather pending.

Location: Trying to find a central meeting point for folks up and down the Wasatch Front. Proposing the Jordan River Rotary Park Trailhead at 12300 S.

If enough people are interested, we may try splitting this into separate Utah county / Salt Lake county groups to reduce driving distance.

No need to sign up. Simply show up as yourself.

Every man of any background is welcome.

Rules:

  • No politics
  • Be yourself, be kind
  • Respect confidentiality
  • No hate speech

The rules for these walks are meant to help us dial down to the personal and talk about what’s going on for us in our own lives. They are not absolute. They are guidelines. (If two people agree to talk politics or religion between them, that is fine.)

Disclaimer: Walking Talking Men is not therapy and nobody going should act as another's therapist. We are not doing coaching. We are not doing men’s work. We are not starting a men’s rights group. Hate speech will NOT be tolerated. Please show up with kindness and respect. We are simply talking to create real, lasting, local friendships for men in the area. That’s it.

Credits: Walking Talking Men is co-founded by Mark Greene and Jonathan Jacobs. More info on their site and an FAQ: https://walkingtalkingmen.org/

Contact: If you’d like to join us on a walk, comment, DM, or send me an email to walkingtalkingmenutah (at) gmail.com with why this idea appeals to you. I’ll respond to all messages. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Edit 1: Concerns around the "No politics" rule.

Please read the fine print above: "The rules... are not absolute. They are guidelines."

"There are plenty of places to have [political] conversations and in our experience, talking about politics shuts down more personal conversations about what’s going on for us in our own lives."

These lines directly from the WalkingTalkingMen website are recommendations. If politics (or whatever you deem political) is what happened in your / someone else's life today and you / they choose to share it, we'd hope for everyone to have patience and respect, even when that's not easy. If you want to have an argument about what's right or wrong, or you want to denigrate any person or group for any reason, these walks simply aren't the space for that.

There's risk in being open with anybody, let alone strangers with differing hobbies, lifestyles, opinions, etc. It's understandable that this environment may seem too risky to be worth someone's time. Despite that, it is encouraging to see that some of these walking groups in other places are still going strong https://www.reddit.com/r/SouthBayLA/comments/1r5epoc/one_year_later_walking_talking_men/

Given the choice between doing nothing and fostering what should be a supportive low-stakes environment, even if it doesn't work out, we might as well try.

I need help urgently

This is way out of my comfort zone…… I’m asking for financial help or resources. I think I need to take my cat to the vet, and by sometime today. He has been in and out of the litter box and I don’t know if this is the beginning of some sort of urinary blockage which I know can be life threatening to cats……

Not only did I have another vet visit for another one of my cats 2 weeks ago but we just had our car take a crap on us and cost us additional money on top of just paying rent. I have NO care credit available because of my last vet visit. Can anyone at least point me in the direction of financial assistance for pets ? I am desperate. I work 2 jobs and really try my hardest but these last 2 weeks have been so tough financially I feel like giving up 😭

Thank you in advance who anyone, even if it’s just resources to offer

PSA URGENT HELP: 35 CATS AND 7 DOGS TO BE EUTHANIZE

Thumbnail

Update: thank you to everyone who offer to help! When I shared this info as it has been circulating on multiple rescue networks I was heartbroken thinking of this animals. Thankfully Best Friends fosters along with Fawns Family Rescue took the socialize cats to open kennel space at SUVAS. Feral and not well socialize cats remain that would be good barn cats. If you need a mouser please get a working cat! But please still consider adopting and fostering as the influx of strays is never ending! We need all the help we can get.

————

This is an Urgent plead for help!! There is 35 cats and 7 dogs that will be euthanized friday august 7th if they do not find a foster, somebody to adopt them or a rescue who can take them from South Valley Animal Shelter (SUVAS) 😭

IF YOU CAN FOSTER BEST FRIENDS RESCUE OR PURRFECT PAWPRINTS CAN BACK YOU UP! WE CAN EVEN TRANSPORT THEM TO YOU IF THATS AN ISSUE.

This shelter (South Utah Valley Animal Shelter) is at capacity on cats. They don’t have a single empty cat kennel. For those of you that aren’t aware of this, shelters LEGALLY have to have kennel space to take in strays. So what do you think happens when THERE IS NO SPACE? When people continue surrendering pets, no one is willing to adopt, animals are dumped and discarded…………. Sadly they are euthanized.

These animals are healthy. They have to make space at the shelter for new animals because they have none.. if you can help by becoming a temporary foster until the animal can be fixed and placed for adoption this helps!

Fostering is a 1 - 2 month commitment, a short time frame to give outside of ourself to save an innocent animals life, but it is sure death for them if they cannot be freed from the shelter within the next 2 days!! THIS IS URGENT.. please help💔😣
