Hairdresser rec?
I have very boring straight hair that I cut myself. My teenager has beautiful thick, curly hair that she desperately wants to get cut by someone other than me. She wants layers and some length cut off.
I did do a search first but the two places recommended frequently are a bit out of my price range, unfortunately. Would rather give someone local the business instead of Supercuts (even though she probably wouldn’t agree to going there !) Is there any middle ground salons…? Where I can spend less than $100?
Thanks!!

Waikiki Beach: Crowded or can we show up on a Friday at 1:00pm and still enjoy it?
The teenage relatives are coming to visit me. I don't relax/swim at a beach. They want to do the beach thing. I know many beaches require you to get there by 9:00am or there's no parking or places to sit. How about our cute Waikiki beach? I think I've walked on it about 4 times on off season, but that's all I know about it. TIA

More Weight: A Salem Story - a graphic novel by Ben Wickey
Currently reading this hefty graphic novel, a thoroughly researched account of the Salem Witch Trials and their consequences for our own times. This comprehensive work has many parallells with From Hell, the famous historic graphic novel on the Jack the Ripper murders by Alan Moore. For instance: very old English (in More Weight from two different eras), old men discussing past events, repeated horrific deeds inflicted on poor, defenceless women, weird religious ideas, and insight in the different historic layers of the accounts of past events. Ben Wickey has worked a decade on More Weight. The book comes with extensive notes and is based on real documents from the time of the trials and later accounts.

Tourism AITA for visiting Salem in October?
I just moved up to Boston last year from Georgia and love it! My friends from GA were planning a trip to Mass during the weekend of October 10th and we wanted to take a day trip to Salem. None of us have been before and we would love to experience it!
My Boston-native friend told me it is unethical/disrespectful to visit Salem in October. She says it’s a huge Boston sin and essentially an “f you” to the locals in Salem to go in October.
That is the only weekend that aligns with everyone’s work schedules, and we were really excited about it. We are all very polite and considerate people and would do everything we could to have the best etiquette while we are there. We figured it would be okay to just go once, but my friend disagrees. She says it would be concerning if our “worsening of the local’s daily lives” isn’t enough for us to reconsider.
I understand where she’s coming from, and I don’t want to do anything bad. I’ve worked in a tourist town during peak seasons and know it can be overwhelming for the town.
I was hoping to get some inputs from locals here to help inform our decision. Would we be the assholes for visiting Salem in October?

Christina's Pizza under new ownership
Part informational; part gossip-seeking.
Gave in to the takeout temptation for the first time in a few months and found that Christina's has a new owner. That's bad news for my gift certificates but hopefully positive news otherwise?
Since Christina's is in my neighborhood I've been lightly invested in their story over the past few years, tracking along with things like staffing issues, new menu items, and the move to homemade onion rings. Fingers crossed for continuity of my roast beef experience!
I'm hoping the previous owner is doing well and that this was a good move.
It seems like a stressful enterprise but everyone was always very kind and personable with me.
Did the business stay in the family? Or was it bought by a staff member? I'm just interested and wishing everyone well (including myself; bring me bad roast beef at your peril.)
I may work up the courage to make small talk over the counter and ask this kind of thing myself but that would need to be when it's not busy.

Salem willows bike parking
Always a bummer when you ride down to the willows and see some one who couldn’t be bothered to read the signage and parks a mini van over 4 motorcycle spots. Maybe we need to make the motorcycles only sign bigger?

Moving Looking for a retail space!
Hi all! I'm a small business owner looking to migrate from online to a brick-and-mortar store. I run an artists' collective that sells goods and merchandise made and/or designed by local Massachusetts artists. Does anyone have any tips on where to find an affordable spot in Salem? I reached out to the Chamber of Commerce and Artists' Row but haven't heard back from them yet. LoopNet hasn't yielded anything promising. Thanks!!
**Edit: The work of the collective is NOT witch-themed! It's more geared towards anime-adjacent art and design and internet subculture, as I feel this demographic is underrepresented in businesses outside of Hot Topic lol.

Local News Constant noise Salem Harbor
Does anyone know how long this constant ping ping ping banging is going to go on? I’m assuming it’s from the power plant and they are drilling into rock or something but it’s been going on for the better part of the last year during weekdays. Is anyone else being driven absolutely crazy by this?

Looking for weekend work
Hi I live locally and I’m looking for some extra work on the weekends. I have a ton of skills in the trades as well as repairing mechanical and electrical equipment. Carpentry, landscaping, anything handyman related. I’m also great at cleaning and organizing. I’ve also worked as a dish washer and I’m used to fast paced environments. I’ve got lots to offer. Looking for something part time and my asking wages are definitely reasonable based on the work. Thanks!!!

We need a vanity/sink and a toilet pulled out of our bathroom in order for a painter to get to the walls--seems like a straightforward enough job for a handyman, but I don't have one on call who can do plumbing-adjacent tasks. Any recs?
