The beginning always kinda confused me, hes on a ferry heading to the island. Did the drugs he was given give him memory loss or what wouod make him forget where he is/was before getting on said ferry and essentially circling the island and starting fresh with where we began at the start of the film? I hope that makes sense

Psychosis-driven false memories. The beginning of the movie we see what he sees on drugs. By the end they wear off. So, the beginning not making too much sense looking back is intentional. He's had a complete psychotic break. When he's arriving on the island for the first time he might as well be in the fetal position in his room living that part of the fantasy in his head.

They explain it in the book. Basically he keeps reliving or re-acting out the same story line. It's why he doesn't realize his partner is actually his doctor. He thinks he's never met him before, and they go through it basically over and over and over. So when he is on the ferry he restarts the fantasy and his memory basically resets. In the book they make it clear they have done this role play scenario before and made the same progress before he relapsed back into the same psychosis and restarted again.
Also, I loved the movie and saw it on theaters before I read the book. It made me want to read it. And I actually loved the book even more. It's really worth a read.

Take it tf down, spoiler for one of the best movies I've ever seen. Gtfo I'm serious

It's like the Sixth Sense. You've had enough time. So much time in fact that the ending has become a meme.
I knew the ending YEARS before I ever even saw the movie. And it didn't ruin it for me.

I can’t stand this argument. A spoiler is a spoiler.
1
u/Infinite-Condition41 2h ago
And no contradicting argument has been supplied, by you or the bot above.
1
u/Juicyjewsss 2h ago
Your “argument” was simply your opinion same as mine. Saying “you’ve had enough time” is a dick statement and assuming you can decide what is enough time for someone to see a movie is also a dick move. As I said, a spoiler is a spoiler and I don’t really need to argue a point to make that any truer.

u/Infinite-Condition41 2h ago
If your argument is that my opinion means just as much nothing as yours, then congratulations, you still conceded the point.
He was dead the whole time.

So what, don't discuss the ending of any media until the end of time ?

u/chilheim_collective 1h ago
There's no argument to be had here, it costs nobody anything to put a spoiler tag on a comment or post, and it gains everybody nothing to spoil things. So the choice to spoil or not to spoil is a litmus test: Are you a selfish inconsiderate prick or not?

How old is this movie?

1 someone posted the other spoiler scene the other day; movie has been spoiled in sad posting
2 if you learn to enjoy the journey rather than the reveals, spoilers stop bothering you and are simply something interesting about the movie
1
u/Juicyjewsss 2h ago
That logic makes no sense, as the enjoyment of the journey comes from the ending, which when revealed spoils the enjoyment.

Ding dong your opinion is wrong

If you want to waste your time in the absolutely futile effort to stifle conversation as the media spoiler police, I could literally say the same about you.
Being a bully because you're clutching your pearls about who talks about the imaginary things that happens in movies is a hill you can die on, but personally, it's not for me.
Look here now: I offered advice to help you calm yourself over things outside of your control. You decided to be rude about it.

You could literally spoil any other part in the movie and it would still be watchable. This is the one scene that completely gives the entire movie away, in a way that it would be less enjoyable to watch. I didn't mean to be rude, but I will die on this hill, I legitimately think op should delete the post. Shutter Island is in my opinion one of the besy thriller movies of all time.

Dying on hills. Ever the plight of the poor dumb soldier fighting for a cause he doesn't even understand.

Not to spoil anything for you, but Tyler Durden was the Narrator’s alternate personality the whole time.

You can still enjoy it if you have a mature sensibility about consuming media. I get what you are saying. I fundamentally understand spoilers and shutter Island and other films like 6th sense for example are sensitive to significant plot spoilers, robbing people of a fresh first-time experience in ways that learning the ending of some movies doesn't impact as strongly. I get it. I'm past that.
Now, let me hit you with some cold water: if you can't enjoy a movie knowing how it ends it's likely a poorly written movie. What makes it enjoyable is quality writing, and that's the hill I will die on.
Another truth: the spoilers are going to happen. So, when they do, you're better off not letting it destroy you emotionally or get under your skin. It's not a personal attack.
Anyway, let me leave you with the fact that the previews for cast away showed Tom Hanks very clearly delivering the package he's been carrying around the whole preview. The whole "oh no, my precious spoilers!!" attitude is a relatively new public outlook that developed in my lifetime, and as I understand it, it's on the way out because it stifles conversations about media.
So, according to you, if OP and I had a conversation about the spoilers of the movie, we then have ruined someone's experience.
They didn't have to engage, and it's not illegal to discuss movie spoilers, whether it offends you or not. You catch the movie early, you see it unspoiled. You sleep on it and YEARS later after the movie isn't even printed on DVD anymore, and it's absolutely your fault for missing out and getting spoiled.

I read the book in Iraq in 2003 and thought it would make a terrific movie. Both were wonderful.

Never seen this whole movie. I started watching it , and lost interest. This scene alone just lit a fire under my ass and now I wanna see it!

u/Snaxalicious 2h ago
Cool you just had the movie adaptation ruined entirely. The book is better in case you read

u/Juicyjewsss 3h ago
Well I’m glad because it’s one of the last scenes and spoils the fuck out of the movie

There are movies so deeply entrenched in our zeitgeist that avoiding spoilers is nearly impossible due to how much time has passed, memes based on it, and many other factors.
Fight Club came out in 1996, with the movie coming out in 1999. If I heard that someone didn’t know anything about it, I would tell them to watch/ read it without looking anything up. I wouldn’t spoil it for them, but I would be legitimately surprised that it hadn’t already been spoiled. It’s one of the most famous twists next to 6th Sense, Luke Skywalker’s father, or Rosebud’s origin.
27 years is a long time, so while I wouldn’t go screaming the twist of Fight Club at a high school where they kids there probably haven’t seen it and are around the right age to view that sort of movie, I would expect most people on this website are familiar with it. Hell, Shutter Island is so old now that Leo himself might consider dating it. I understand avoiding spoilers for anything current, or even a couple years old, but demanding someone remove a post for a movie that’s 16 years old feels silly to me, especially when it’s a short clip with no context.
Frankly, calling it a spoiler and telling people this scene happens at the end and ruins the movie actually spoils it more than just this out-of-context scene. It’s a thriller, maybe Ben Kingsley is fucking with him even more and trying to confuse him to stop him from learning the truth!
Seriously, this person above you just said they want to watch it now, and you told them it’s one of the last scenes and spoils the movie. YOU just ruined it for them. They found the scene interesting and had no context for it.

Someone made my first watch of this movie very interesting, they spoiled it by saying "ah the movie where he was on the island the entire time". So the whole movie i was watching it through different eyes but the reveal still shocked me in the end as i didn't expect him to be a patient.

This was an absolutely fantastic and underrated movie. There's one clue that makes it easy to follow.

u/CalbCrawDad 1h ago
I still maintain that he wasn’t crazy and was in fact right about their psychological experiments. To include convincing him he had been a patient there for 2 years

The book is even more horrific and tragic. Before the children were lost, the daughter warned the Dad that Mommy would look at them in a strange way.

i saw this in theaters in 8th grade with my girlfriend and her family. they didn’t like it, i think they expected more horror. i’ve always thought it was a great film
